Unemployment rises; Ohio third worst in job losses

Regional and state unemployment rates were generally higher in December.
All four regions and 46 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases for December, while two states registered decreases and two states had no change rates, according to a report today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Through 2007, jobless rates were up in 36 states, down in 12 states and the District of Columbia and unchanged in two states.
The national unemployment rate rose to 5 percent in December, compared to 4.4 percent during the same time in 2006.
Ohio's unemployment rate was up slightly compared to the same month in 2006, from 5.6 to 6 percent for the month.
The largest employment increases were recorded in Texas (+18,600), California (+15,500), Washington (+10,700), and Virginia (+10,200).
The largest employment decreases were in Kansas (-6,200), South Carolina (-5,800), Ohio (-3,900) and Indiana (-3,100).
