American Axle strike hasn't touched local GM plant yet
Thursday, February 28, 2008
The United Auto Workers strike against American Axle and Manufacturing has forced General Motors Corp. to tell workers in Pontiac, Mich. not to report after that plant's first shift today.
The GM SUV assembly plant in Moraine, however, continued to operate this morning, Feb. 28, a GM spokesperson said.

About 3,600 UAW workers struck five American Axle plants starting early Tuesday. American Axle supplies the GM plant at Kettering Boulevard and Stroop Road with rear axles, drive shafts and other components.
Jessica Peck, a Moraine plant spokeswoman, said the plant continued to operate. She said updates would be provided if that were to change.
Renee Rogers, a spokeswoman for Detroit-based American Axle, referred questions about any future impact of the strike to GM. But she said talks have not resumed since the strike began, and they have not been scheduled to resume, either.
"Our negotiating team never left the bargaining table," Rogers said. "We're ready to resume. We have staff at the negotiating site."
The UAW is fighting what it says are company demands to cut wages by up to $14 an hour. A call to a UAW spokesman in Michigan was not immediately returned.
