Vandalia Delphi site being demolished

VANDALIA — A contractor has started demolition of a mostly empty Delphi Corp. chassis plant at the southeast corner of North Dixie Drive and Northwoods Boulevard.
Brandenburg Industrial Service Co., of Chicago, started the demolition work March 24, Rich Hopkins, a Vandalia city government spokesman, said Tuesday, April 8. The demolition will likely be completed near year's end, Hopkins said.

The demolition does not include the nearby Delphi facility which holds a safety products testing business, Hopkins said.
Hopkins said the building will be demolished down to its slab and readied for possible redevelopment next year. He said no potential users for the site have stepped forward, but he believes the site — just a "few hundred feet" from Interstate 75 exit 64 — will be attractive.
"Really, there are no losers in this," Hopkins said.
Bankrupt Delphi said last November that it has agreed to sell its interiors and closures business — part of its Northwoods Boulevard Vandalia Engineering Center — to a subsidiary of The Renco Group Inc.
The deal would have left the Renco Group operating part of the center while Delphi operated another part as its safety testing business, a Delphi spokesman said last year.
Shortly after that announcement, Chrysler LLC asked a federal bankruptcy court to delay the sale to see how its supply contracts are affected.
A Delphi spokesman could not be immediately reached Tuesday.
