Wal-Mart going up despite concerns
Neighbors concerned about flooding
Comment: Your thoughts about a Wal-Mart Supercenter near the Dayton Mall?
Thursday, April 17, 2008
MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — Heavy equipment is rolling for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter near the Dayton Mall and Interstate 675, a project delayed for a year by a residents' challenge to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency that was under review by a state environmental board.
The residents, who hired a Cincinnati attorney to fight the project before the state's Environmental Review Appeals Commission, simply ran out of money, said the attorney, Tim Mara.

The residents argued that because of flooding concerns, the Ohio EPA should not have awarded the retail giant a special permit to fill in .9 acres of wetlands and impact three unnamed tributaries to Holes Creek. The company also was awarded approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The $8 million Supercenter on Kingsridge Drive has been scaled down a bit, with the dropping of a tire and lube center, according to plans filed with Miami Twp.
Now, the building will enclose 176,351 square feet, rather than 184,000, when the project ends in March 2009. The Supercenter replaces a Wal-Mart leased on Springboro Pike.
Construction on the last undeveloped parcel near Dayton Mall, however, means a new ecological project will be launched.
To obtain the OEPA permit, Wal-Mart agreed to fund the re-establishment of an ice age fen in the Belmont neighborhood of Dayton for Five Rivers MetroParks.
A fen is a wetland that is fed by groundwater. A second project Wal-Mart agreed to undertake is the restoration of a stream in Oak Creek South Park in Washington Twp.
Dave Nolin, director of conservation for Five Rivers MetroParks, expects work on the fen to occur this spring. The unique wetlands created by glaciers were once common in Ohio. They are now all but gone. It will be the only fen in Montgomery County.
According to a lengthy agreement Wal-Mart signed with OEPA and the Corps, the company has six months to restore the fen after it disturbs the wetlands at the construction site. Nolin said a draft plan for the fen work is nearly complete and Wal-Mart and parks representatives will be signing off on it soon.
To bring back the fen, old drain tiles will be removed, invasive plants destroyed, native species planted, and a lot of earth moved.
Nolin said he's looking for funds to complete a boardwalk at the fen, which Wal-Mart is not funding. Wal-Mart will also be required to monitor the fen for five years to ensure its success, Nolin said.
The fen isn't open to the public now and there's no firm opening date.
Wal-Mart did not respond to several requests for comment.

Ok for all the cub foods comments.. I work at cub foods buy the dayton mall and I shop at WALMART because our prices are inflated. Cub foods is slowly going out of business, huber heights is gone and the only reason trotwood is still open is because Walmart went bye bye from all the theft. (which is why cub foods has 5 securtiy guards for that one store) Whoever made the comment that cub foods has quality product you apparently have never been on the “inside.” Happy Walmart Shopping!

Globalization its inevitable complaining about change will not do you any good. You should look to the future and see where you can fit in with the jobs that cant be outsourced like Construction, Local Management, Accounting, Health care, Skilled trades like Plumbing, Air conditioning and refrigeration, Auto repair, Roofing, Banking, Sales and Marketing yes the Country’s of the world need us to sell there goods here. Distribution and warehousing. ETC.
Time to adjust and master the new game.

Almost all retailers sell the same Asian junk. It doesn’t matter who it is. People want cheap goods, but we have to keep the good jobs in America. If we manufactured the goods we have, people wouldn’t be able to afford anything. In Europe, Levi’s cost 100 bucks. Gas is around 5-6 bucks a liter. Yea, liter. American’s are now facing a reality that has been happening all over the world already. No one is to blame for Wal-Mart the shoppers. Just watch the South Park episode about Wal-Mart.

Reading this article brings up such a gray area. In one hand, people want development, but are picky about what kind of development. The whole “not in my back yard” idea. Would people be made if it was Ikea, Menards, Home Depot, Super Valu, Best Buy, Holiday Inn, Lexus, Honda, Ford, or whoever wanted to develop there? Is it because it is Wal-Mart and they have such a bad connotation? Is it because of the union? Well, most retail jobs are non-union. And I don’t to go into unions here.

No, we do not need a Super WalMart near the Dayton Mall. Traffic is already too congested there. If you put a Walmart there, replace the CubFoods with a SuperWalmart. What you need to do is place a WalMart where the Salem Mall is located where a lot of people can really take advantage of the prices and the terrific deals. You need a very large WalMart there, or at least a Super Store of some sort so that people do not have to spend their money on the buses and taxis to get to the other stores.

I drive by the (future) site of the new Super Walmart near Dayton mall, every day, on way to work. That site was not pristine and beautiful, but more unkempt, tangled brambles and underbrush, with a marshy area, abutting 675…. But, the other day, a lone deer was grazing in that area…..NOT for long….sad….

Well up until now, i have read all these postings, and i have to admit one thing: What a bunch of cry babies. And we ALL know why nothing can ever be built on the west side, i mean c`mon people, really! And as far as building a new walmart (Dayton mall) i think its about the most stupid you could ever imagine. What this AREA truely needs is a little leadership in the art of common sense. But dont count on it ever coming from Miami TWP. They only see these. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Why doesn’t WalMart build ANY stores or SuperWalMarts in West Dayton, folks? No really, I mean it: WHY? Please someone…give me a realistic answer. There are NO WalMart stores in West Dayton. I understand there is plenty of space and lots of empty buildings with LOTS of parking…like Salem Mall, for example. I’m new around here and just don’t get it. Help me out here, okay? Thanks.

Hey, it depends on how many Wal-Mart shoppers are in the area. If no one shops there to buy Wal-Mart’s second rate stuff, then it’ll go under anyway. Second rate shoppers and overpriced second rate junk go hand in hand.

Dayton Ohio has the worst urban sprawl than any other city in the united states. This sprawling of the suburbs and the exburbs is making this city Sink deeper into deadtown. If you would like change in this area call your local goverment. Dayton Ohio has got to make a progressive move to bringing back the core city of Dayton. The cities are where good jobs come out of , NOT suburbs.

Just to let you all know, they couldn’t renovate the existing Wal-Mart in Miami Township. That store and shopping center does not have the room for the additional parking and the grocery items that a Super Wal-Mart has. At least the Lube center is being eliminated so you tree hugging hippies can be happy that there won’t be any of those pollutants being poured down the drain. Cub Foods is a joke of a store. Their prices are very inflated. Hopefully the old place will be leased to someone.

It really is a shame that they are destroying those wetlands. The thought of destroying all of those animal’s homes makes me sick, and it makes me even sicker that the township is letting it happen. There is no reason they couldn’t have renovated the 741 store. Now it will be another eyesore. Typical for montgomery county.

Upset about the Walmart and I have to agree with the post earlier from Jim.”There are so many reasons why this Walmart should not go here. This wetland area should be protected. The goverment should be protecting the area, without the need for residents to spend money for attorneys.”The traffic by the Mall will be terrible. Only two ways to get there 725 to Kingsridge or 741 to Kingsridge.I will avoid this store and now all the trees are being cut down during spring and the birds are making nest.

Why does everyone hate Walmart? Obvisoulsy there is a demand for them because they keep building and the parking lots are always full. With the prices of things now, it’s good to have a place where you can get stuff for cheap. If you hate Walmart, don’t go there, but I’m going to go, so leave me alone and stop telling me to boycott it.

Yet another Wal-Mart, its bad enough that they are all like 5 mins from each other. More people need to stop the spread of Wal-Mart, its like a plague that we can’t get rid of. And my question is why does wal-mart always have to tear up good land or tree and what not to build, why can’t they building in an existing empty store. WE NEED TO STOP THE SPREAD OF WAL-MART. This isn’t what Sam Walton would have wanted. Its is baby-boomer son that has spread wal-mart everywhere like a disease.

Hey, I hear there’s an empty Kroger store in West Dayton that could be home to a new WalMart super store! There’s also an entire dead shopping center, Westown, that used to be alive and vital. If, as has been said here, that Dayton is truly circling the drain, then it all began with the decline of mfg jobs and the decline of West Dayton. There is NO investment going on there anymore…other than to buy shutters for closed stores. What say you Mayor McLin? Whaddya gonna do about it?

WalMart will do whatever they want in a Duckburg town like Dayton. There are TONS of briars and ignorant trash and that’s exactly what WM thrives on. WM’s customer base cares about ONLY ONE THING: Cheaper Prices! Just look at all the dumb waddling fat briars slugging through WM like a bunch of obese cattle — the very picture of ignorance! They could care less if the store is clean or the workers awake. That’s who they; Dayton is packed FULL of ‘em. WM will be a wild success at that location.

There are so many reasons why this Walmart should NOT go here. This wetland area should be protected. The goverment should be protecting the area, without the need for residents to spend money for attorneys. Honest is right, but WalMart will never build in West Dayton because they know they would lose money. I am pretty much anti-union because the cost of unions drove manufacturing out of the USA. However, with the abysmal way that Walmart treats their employees I am starting to change my mind about unions. As others have pointed out, Walmart also treats their suppliers like garbage using strong handed tactics and threats of pulling their business if the supplier doesn’t meet their “new” lower cost to Walmart. It leaves no margin for the supplier to be able to survive.

Due to the recent problems with things made in China and lead, I started buying things only made in the USA. Additionaly, I am determined to support American jobs.It takes diligence, and sometimes costs a bit more. We are buying a loft bed set soon. At one furniture store we were told that nobody makes bunkbeds and loft beds in the USA anymore. This turned out to not be true. Using the web we located one in Columbus. Though it is difficult you can find some things made in USA even at WM.

Have to add my two cents here. Wal-Mart jumped at the opportunity to purchase all their textile products (clothing items) from overseas as soon as trade restrictions were lifted. Wal-Mart has limited negotiations with it’s suppliers or contractors. The Wal-Mart way or no way. They win legally because they can outspend you and out wait you. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

With the exception of niche products like hemp clothing and hippie-made Vermont candles, practically everything we buy is manufactured in Asia (funny how the hippies come out ahead in this game). The US is no longer in the business of “making things,” and unless we figure out how to provide sustainable careers for the lower 60%… …we’re not going to be in the business of buying things either! It’s pretty bad when half the population struggles and yet we import our nurses from Asia& Africa.

There is two Super Walmart stores within 10 miles radiance of were I live. A Wal-Mart (or anything else) built around “Salem Mall South” will be a run-down hole within 2 years or less. The only truly nice & clean Wal-Mart I have encountered is at Wilmington & 675. I gave up on Walmart when I was in college when they decided to add a surcharge to anyone using a debit card. As a college student that really affected me. They have since reversed that policy, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Therefore I choose not to shop there. However I am disappointed that there will be an empty building sitting there on the corner of 741 and Lyons. When you go shopping would you buy an identical item labeled “made in the USA” and imprinted with a union mark that costs twice as much as the imported item? That’s why Wal-Mart, Meijer, Target and others thrive. We want to keep our high wage union jobs and also our low cost goods. Something about having your cake and eat it too comes to mind.

The reason people hate walmart is the original owner Charles Walton built that company on the hard work and dedication of its employees that he really was good to they had health care and profit sharing and as soon as he died big business swooped in took the name and screwed over every single one of its employees. I don’t blame people for hating them and as for them building a new building its ridiculous. Why do they need a new place? Why not refurbish what they have instead of wasting it.

I stopped shopping at Wal Mart’s in the Dayton Area when they decided to NOT support local non-profit charities. They feel that the local non-profits do not fit their “marketing mix” here in Dayton. My reason for NOT shopping there is that they claim to do so much for communities … they don’t do much at all compared to how much money they are bringing in from our communities. Yes they create local jobs, but they aren’t very good at giving back to the communities!

I wonder what will become of the soon to be unoccupied building that the current Wal-Mart on 741 currently resides in. One observation:
“The only reason so many left wing organizations hate on Wal-Mart is because they are a non union store. Meijer, Kroger, Target are no better than Wal-Mart they just aren’t union.”
This statement by Matt does not make any sense. Wal-Mart is non union, but the other stores are no better because they aren’t union either? I’m confused.

Matt, Thank you for having common sense. It’s too bad most don’t when it comes to Wal-Mart. For some reason many in our country hate success. IBM, Microsoft, Google, etc. I guess it’s popular to despise a company just because it has “made it”. Of course, Target is/was owned by a Democratic so it’s not nice to pick on them even though they sell the same things from the same places. That leaves Wal-Mart alone in the cross hairs and an easy target for some.

Every single person that commented on this article is stupid.
The only reason so many left wing organizations hate on Wal-Mart is because they are a non union store. Meijer, Kroger, Target are no better than Wal-Mart they just aren’t union.
They are not really building a new one just relocating the one on 741 and Lyons to a different location.
Wal-Mart is not the reason for our economic downturn people. Blame that on inflation from the global demand for oil.

I don’t like Wal-Mart, PERIOD! They’re one of the biggest reasons for our current recession - they have aggressively destroyed US jobs & manufacturers, replacing them with their own low wage/no benefits jobs. Their thirst for cheap, couldn’t-care-less-about-the-quality-because-we-won’t-accept-any-responsibility-anyway merchandise has driven nearly all production overseas.Hicks in Bentonville determine what gets produced for this country & they aren’t too good at it!

A new Wal-Mart is unnecessary and not needed. Now more valueable wetlands are being destroied. Big business like Wal-Mart does not give a hoot about the enviroment or its employees. It only cares about the bottom line.

I’ve got news for ya, Dayton. You better take what you can get. And WalMart is about all you’re gonna get. WalMart, Dollar General, an empty Meijer store, Delphi, NCR, Dayton Tire, Frigidaire, GM, Inland, Mead, Salem Mall….the place is dying and on life support. And downtown Dayton? That’s a laugh. Dayton IS a Wal-Mart. Get used to it or get-ta-packin’…Dayton’s days are over and the illegal aliens have arrived to take the last few jobs. Dayton is circling the drain and this is your future.

I don’t like Super Wal-Mart stores at all - no matter where they build them. There is too much real estate inside the store. It takes me twice as long to get whatever it is that I’m going there for (compared to a regular sized Wal-Mart store). Wal-Mart needs an eye opening. There is a reason why everyone is switching to Target.

There is absolutely no need for another one. Are people that lazy that they can’t drive the extra 6 - 7 miles to the one down on W Dorothy!?!?
