DAYTON — Washington, D.C.-based International Union of Electronic Workers that represents about 60,000 auto and other manufacturing workers will move its headquarters to the Dayton area by the end of the year, the union's president said Tuesday.
Union president James Clark said the majority of the union's members are located in Ohio or surrounding states, representing workers at Delphi Corp., General Motors Corp., General Electric and other companies.

"We think the best way to service our members is to be close to them," Clark said.
The IUE has been headquartered in Washington since it was founded in 1949. The union merged with the Communications Workers of America in 2000 and became the IUE-CWA, the industrial division of the CWA. CWA headquarters will remain in Washington.
Clark said he is exploring locations in the Dayton area. About a half dozen IUE headquarters workers will relocate to Dayton.
Clark said the IUE-CWA will continue to have representation in Washington.
