GM offers $200M to bring parties together

> What do you think of GM's proposal?

Staff Writer

Thursday, May 08, 2008

General Motors Corp. offered on Thursday, May 8, to pay American Axle & Manufacturing about $200 million to help end the strike that has shut down the Moraine GM plant and some 30 other GM plants nationally.

The money would be used to fund employee buyouts, early retirements and "buydowns" in a bid to help American Axle reach agreement with the United Auto Workers.

Extras

More than 3,600 UAW members have struck five American Axle plants in Michigan and New York since Feb. 26, choking off supplies to GM plants. The GM-Moraine SUV assembly plant off Stroop Road has been shut down since March 3, and the Dryden Road DMAX truck engine plant has been affected, too. Some local suppliers to those facilities — such as West Carrollton's Johnson Controls plant and CEVA Logistics in Miamisburg — are down, as well.

GM's offer is predicated on a strike settlement and is of limited duration, said Renee Rogers, an American Axle spokeswoman.

"It is not indefinite," Rogers said.

She said negotiations between the UAW and her company continue. "We're hopeful that the parties can reach agreement."

She said the money would be used to "bridge the gap" between company and union positions on what it will take to lower corporate expenses, help workers shoulder lower wages and keep domestic American Axle plants open.

A UAW spokesman could not be reached.

Look at what the unions have done to GM. The Moraine plant is closing because of union workers and poor quality products. General Motors is on track to be number 3 in 2 years. Unions are for lazy workers who do not want to perform. GM will be bankrupt in 5-6 years unless you can cut 50 percent or more of the workforce and build quality cars like Toyota or Honda.

I think that it’s a shame and an insult to the active employee’s of general motors. general motors over the last few year’s has done nothing but cry about how much money they’ve lost. It’s strange that they seem to have all kind’s of money when some other company need’s assistance. I worked for general motors and retired with Thirty-Three years of service and all g.m. has done is see how they can screw their retiree’s, they’ve raised all our co-pay’s,and require that we pay so much.

Gas is 3.78 a gallon where I live. If it helps make the price of gas go down, I say “give it to them”.

I think that it is crazy to offer the company money when GM is laying people off and offering them buyouts because they say that they are losing money. There own workers are losing jobs but they have that much money to give away. I think that it is a shame. They should be putting that money back into there own company don’t get me wrong I don’t think that there is anything wrong with helping but how can you help someone else when you say you don’t have any money.
