CompuNet Clinical Laboratories offers affordable lab tests without prescriptions

DAYTON — CompuNet Clinical Laboratories now does eight disease-screening lab tests without doctors' prescriptions at its five service centers in Beavercreek, Centerville, Oakwood, Springboro and Troy.
Insurance companies don't pay for tests unless a doctor orders them, but a spokeswoman said CompuNet tried to price them affordably — from $15 for a fasting diabetes screening to $95 for a heart-cholesterol-liver-and-kidney profile. Other tests are for diabetes, anemia and the heart, prostate and thyroid.
People without insurance or regular doctors are likely customers, CEO Ed Doucette said.
"Over the past few years, we have received a growing number of requests for tests that screen for common health conditions," he said. "There is a trend among consumers to assume greater personal responsibility for their own health and wellness."
If a customer's test result is of concern, a CompuNet physician will call before the report is mailed. Otherwise, results are mailed within a few days, including an extra copy for the customer's doctor.
All customers "should discuss their lab test results with a doctor," Doucette said.
More CompuNet DIRECT tests are planned later. Customers must be at least 18 and don't need appointments, although they can schedule them at Beavercreek, Centerville or Springboro. For more info, call (866) 570-5227.
