Corporate donation to help fund local financial education classes

DAYTON — The Dayton Urban League and the HomeOwnership Center will receive a $25,000 donation from the KeyBank Foundation to fund a local financial literacy program.

The program, titled Credit Yourself, is a "proprietary financial literacy program designed by KeyBank" according to an August 6 press release. One hundred people will participate in the course, which will be broken down into four modules focusing on understanding credit and financial planning.

"This new project will expand our capacity to reach local residents," said Beth Deutscher, executive director of the HomeOwnership Center.

She said the new initiative will be a supplement to existing DUL and HOC programs, which run throughout the course of a year and often are paired with other financial improvement services such as job training.

Deutscher said most of the funding will cover staffing expenses and materials for the training itself, with some money set aside for savings incentives. Currently, she estimated that the HOC reaches over 1,000 people a year through its various outreach services and programs.
