BBB offers document-shredding services day

Staff Report

Thursday, August 28, 2008

MIAMISBURG — The Better Business Bureau is offering the community free document shredding and advice on precautions for avoiding identity theft.

The document shredding event, called "Secure Your ID Day," is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the parking lot of National City Mortgage Co. at the intersection of State Route 741 and Lyons Road in Miamisburg.

Staff members from the Better Business Bureau's Dayton office plan to be on hand to offer tips about proper disposal and destruction of sensitive documents.

An estimated eight million Americans became victims of identity theft last year. The majority of ID theft occurs when the thief has direct contact with the victim's personal information, either through a lost or stolen wallet, going through a mailbox or trash can, or stealing documents from a home or business, BBB officials said.

The BBB had a similar Security Your ID Day earlier this year.
