Historic hamburger joint has new owner

MIAMISBURG — Jack Sperry knows better than to mess with nearly a century of tradition.
Sperry is the new owner of The Hamburger Wagon, located on the sidewalk across from 12 E. Central Ave. on Miamisburg's Market Square.
"I've been a customer ever since I was a kid," said Sperry, 45, who grew up in Washington Twp. So when the opportunity arose to buy the wagon from previous owners Chad and Michelle Lyons, Sperry seized it.
The Hamburger Wagon traces its roots to 1913, when it opened to help feed those rebuilding from the Great Flood. It specializes in small, hand-pattied burgers cooked in a large skillet served on a roll with onion or pickle — no cheese, no mayo, no ketchup, no mustard. For $1.10.
Don't look for those condiments to suddenly appear.
"I'm not going to change anything — it's working just fine as it is," Sperry said.
The Hamburger Wagon has attracted some national acclaim: It is included in a book recently released by George Motz entitled "Hamburger America: A State-By-State Guide to 100 Great Burger Joints."
The wagon's hours are 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (937) 847-2442.
