Some Time Warner Cable customers getting rate increases
Wednesday, October 22, 2008
DAYTON — Time Warner Cable customers who take basic cable or expanded basic cable service will see rate increases of 10 to 12 percent beginning in November, according to the company.
Customers who take bundled packages of more than one service — various combinations of digital cable, phone, high-speed data or high-definition television — won't see the price increases because their rates are guaranteed for one to two years, said Pamela McDonald, regional spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable.
Basic cable service offers 24 channels. Expanded basic — also known as standard — service adds about 50 channels, including ESPN, ESPN2, CNN, Fox Sports Network Ohio, Nickelodeon, Discovery Channel, Bravo and USA Network.
The rate increases will affect fewer than half of Tme Warner's approximately 300,000 customers in the Dayton region, McDonald said Tuesday, Oct. 21. She declined to be more specific, saying that Time Warner does not want to reveal precise figures to competitors.
Subscribers who take basic cable service are currently paying between $10 and $11 per month and will see an increase of about $1 starting in November, McDonald said.
Time Warner needs the rate increases in order to cover costs of programming, operation and customer service, McDonald said.

As a DISH employee I know how that could be very frustrating to have to get a price increase. We all have price increases though they are not fun we sometimes have no choice. As a consumer and an employee with DISH I have learned to be more understanding when companies have to go through this. We always do our best to make sure we don’t have to increase prices that are unfair to our customers. We always try to fight for a fair price if we do have to increase.

TWC. Southern California. They Suck…NEVER AGAIN.. They Lie, the worst Customer service that I know. They sold me a bundle package (Cable, Internet and digital Phone Service.) The person who visited my house even signed a document that says 3000 free international minutes per month for 1 Year. This was in late August. Today I was informed that beginning of November 1st. Its only 1000 minutes per month. This is happening every day to every one who takes this package. Liars. From the top guy to the bottom.

I find it funny how ignorant most of these comments are. It really makes me laugh. Wow, what big news! This happens every year… big surprise! Guess what! It will happen next year too! Most of you are clueless with the poor customer service, poor installations, and poor tech support from Dish Network, DirecTV, at&t, and Verizon… I’ve had them all. Sometimes it takes TWC a while because they are BUSY! The other companies simply don’t have the work load! And THEY STILL SUCK!

I love how TW is coercing people into bundling and signing up for two-year contracts when they used to rake AT&T over the coals for having a yearly contract! Now AT&T DSL is month to month and TW is the one with a contract…and TWO YEARS to boot!
Also, how come it takes TW forever to install things when they advertise sign up today and we’ll install today on their TV add? BTW…I hate their advertising department…whent their commercials come on…I turn the volume off or change channels.

Its like they hook you in with their good deals (ha ha) and then you are forgotten about. Oh, and about the previous comment about the VOIP phone not working after the storm… The ONLY way that you could have phone is if you have a NON electric phone plugged into a LAN line.. Which that person aparently did.. It doesn’t matter who your provider is for phone, bottom line, electric(cordless phone)+ NO electric = NO PHONE.. Most VOIP plans ARE cheaper, but if power outtages are a concern, go with a LAN line provider like AT&T..

FINALLY! What I have been saying for YEARS! The ONLY reason TW had a hold on us is b/c we have NO OTHER OPTIONS! Now we do! I’ve had Dish Ntwrk for over a year. & ANY issues I have had, they have fixed ASAP. I couldn’t even get TW to INSTALL my cable before in less than 3 weeks. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND CANCEL TW NOW! Don’t fall for the bundle ploy, it’s just a way for them to LOCK you into a contract so you CAN’T cancel your service! Its DISCUSTING! Charging MORE for LESS.. C YA TW!

AT&T U-Verse works great for me. No complaints lots of HD channels. I might suggest keeping your traditional land line and not going with IP based phone service. It has worked for a 100 years and mine worked fine all 6 days I was without electric. How long did your Vonage or TW phone work ?

I was telling my co-workers I may have to cancel TWC because it is so expensive. Now it is going to be MORE expensive. I was never too happy with the service. Changing chanels takes FOR EVER and when I want to get a free show on demand it tells me my show is not available and try later… when I call them to tell them what my problem is and after several minutes on the phone it seems like finally somebody is going to fix my problem and… the telephone fails!(my telephone is also with TWC)

I ditched TW this year when I bought a house and got DirecTV. I have not regretted that decision one bit. Better picture, better customer service, better selections of standard and HD channels, and as of yesterday, ALL of the local channels in HD. And all of that for about $20-30 less than what TW was charging me. Do yourselves a favor and get out from under TW’s thumb ASAP!

I think this has put me over the edge. I switched from analog to digital and what a job for the installer. Just the other day the cable came up and said please wait over and over. I reset the box and no help. Had to call TW and after about 1/2 hour do it going. The tec that was installing can’t figure out why I have a low signal on the lower stations. I even had a new cable to the pole. Why when we have a resestion does this company do this? I’m gone !!!!!

Local franchising authorities are in bed w/ TW. What do I get for the money they get from me…city council meetings. You know how much I love watching them! Congress needs to make cable companies offer Ala Carte programming. Why do I have to pay for crap I don’t want and never watch? But that won’t happen as TM lines the pockets of people who can make that happen. Out of 70 some channels I watch maybe 5 or 6 that I can’t get off my antenna over the air way.

first, hats off to time warner for standing their ground to wdtn—why SHOULD we pay “less than a penny a day” for time warner to carry wdtn? wdtn already gets it’s revenue from commercials and last i checked they broadcast over the air!
i admit, it’s a pain to have to call time warner every 6 months to get our cable bill back to $56/month for 1 digital tier and 1 hd cable box, but att u-verse, dish, and direct always total more for the same services so i guess i’ll deal with this inconvenience

This WDTN thing is really interesting. I have written WDTN, TWC, and Lin. Lin did not reply, yet. WDTN said it was unlawful for TWC to carry their signal beyond a certain time without a contract. I have been familiar with that situation in other businesses. However TWC says that Lin pulled the signal of WDTN and other stations. Don’t know who is where.

Yes, the basic tier is under $10, and you get 24 channels, but we only access 4 of these channels (CBS, FOX, NBC, and ABC). For the others (public access, shopping, government access, religious and education), I’ve programmed the TV so they don’t even display. If you want the standard tier, it’s another $45 per month, and even though there are around 50 channels, we access less than 10. Let us pick the channels instead of charging for a bunch of them that we don’t watch!

I don’t have an axe to grind with TW, but I can honestly say that after a “getting used to being without” period, my wife and I are better off without it. Just changed to Dish, what an improvement in programming and quality of picture. Two year contracts…NOT! I was “told” my new contract fee would be $68.00 for 12/mo, and then increase to $71.00 the second 12/mo. When I received my bill, it was $78.00. I called, and was told they didn’t know how the other person “arrived” at $68.00, but my monthly fee would be $98.00!! Swithched to Dish…more programming, more HD channels, two HD receivers, DVR on all 4 TV’s, all for $71/mo, 2 yr commit.

It’s nice to see so many people agree that Time Warner sucks!! It might be nice that they provide free cable to the schools and that they employ locally, what isn’t nice is that we have to finance it!!! Their new bundles are like 79.95 a month, well, we pay 140 for the same thing just because we aren’t new customers! That is double!! It’s robbery!! So good luck to all your TWC supporters, you must have bottomless pockets unlike the rest of us!

Time Warner is going to get exactly what is coming to them. They will LOSE their customer base. Anyone that stays with them if they continue this rate increase and decrease of our local channels is stupid. In the end, we will all get smart, go back to the old antenna and not PAY anyone for service. The sad part is that many people will lose their jobs because the workers at Time Warner will all be terminated when TIME WARNER ENDS UP WITH NO CUSTOMERS. TW be careful what you ASK for.

Instead of just posting here, why not write the FCC and The State of Ohio Attorney General and the United States Attorney General and our Congress persons and ask for an investigation into violations of the law concerning consumer rights and the service providers’ violations of their license provisions?
If you think providing cable services is a snap, there are job openings at Time Warner. Of course you may find a few challenges from so many different directions in providing services.

I see many complaints about Time Warner Cable Customer Service. Did you know that all of these people are employed locally? Time Warner Cable also provides our local schools with free cable & internet access and is a major sponsor for community events. AT&T / DISH customer service centers are one of the worst places to work. They threaten their employees with losing their job if they are sick and need a day off. Think about what type of company & employment practices you want to support.

When I moved, the rep on the phone from Time Warner told me he wasn’t sure if I could get cable service but literally begged me to let them do a site survey at the new house. They told me it would take “a couple of days” and they’d call me back. I was subscribing to the “bundle”-cable, internet, and digital phone-I figured it would be easier to transfer service and agreed. After waiting a couple of weeks, I started calling and emailing with no response. Tomorrow, satellite is installed. Bye TW!

About a year ago I purchased an HDTV, a top-notch A/V reciever, and HDMI cables, with the intent to enjoy HD programming on TWC. What a mistake. The few times a month where I could actually sit down and enjoy a decent HD program I would find stuttered video and dropped signals. Countless technicians, phone calls, and endless reboots on their set-top box finally led me to drop digital service last month. A rise to my basic/standard rates will be the last straw.

TW removed Hallmark Channel and ESPN Classic, but gave us an additional shopping channel (oh, yay). We finally got the Big Ten network, but now we’ve lost WDTN. They should be cutting rates instead of raising them.

At&t is calling about every other day to seel me U-verse. I have had AT&T as my phone since 1971 I started cable with Continental and it was bought out by TW. So I have essentially been their customer for about as long.Loyalty to TW means that I get BEAT UP about every year for a price hike and less stations to watch. When AT&T calls the next time, I’ll listen to their pitch and switch. Thanks TW It’s been real and awakening, but now that I’m awake..Goodbye

You obviously dont give a rats @ss what Customers think of your company as long as your raking in the big bucks i guess. Pretty sad though, that they have to be the way they are. I hope people continue to leave YOU in droves. Serves you right. I say bad TW, Badd!!!!

I dropped cable and DirecTV. Local HD channels come in with amazing picture quality with rabbit ears, I use my computer as a TiVo (any cheap TV-in video card will do) and download any shows I want to see on cable from thepiratebay.org about an hour after they air with the commercials already removed(including shows from HBO and Showtime, FX, etc). Only down side is ESPN and FOXSports, but if there’s a game I want to see I go down to local pub and drink coffee. Mike, AT&T has 6 MBPS DSL cheap.

All of you saying you want AT&T’s U-Verse, go get a satellite dish service instead. I got it when it first became available in my area, and all it ever did was drop service when I was actually trying to use it. TW blows pretty hard too, but at least their service actually worked when I had it.

First it was the Hallmark Channel, then WDTN. TWC posted—-Time Warner Cable’s agreements with programmers to carry their services routinely expire from time to time. We are usually able to obtain renewals or extensions of such agreements, and carriage of programming services is discontinued only in rare circumstances. The following agreements with programmers are due to expire soon, and we may be required to cease carriage of one or more of these services in the near future:
MOJO, Inspirational Life, Outdoor Channel, Expo TV, NHL Network, NBA TV, WDTN, WNDY,WISH. Answers on Demand.

unfortunately, it does have to be WDTN, or WDTN has to allow the other affiliate’s signal to be carried…by FCC regs.

“Stop the rate increase” :the state eliminated LFAs last year.
From Ohio Department of Commerce website: In 2007, Governor Ted Strickland signed Senate Bill 117, which replaced local franchise processes for cable television providers with a state-issued authorization process. This enabled the Director to issue video service authorizations to cable providers in Ohio and to investigate consumer complaints. I personally am done with TWC as soon as ATT U-verse is in my area. When I signed up I was in an apartment and had no choice as they do not allow satellite dishes. They were three days late, overcharged me, wanted to charge me more when I moved to my home, now the DVR quit and I leave for work at 9 am and get home at 8pm and they won’t let me bring it to a store.

I got the Time-Warner because they have fixed $19.95 for 3000 minutes of international calls. Last month I got a letter stating that Time Warner is going to reduce the time from 3000 minutes to 1000 minutes still charging same amount. That is the way they get you and then use you. Dear Time Warner Cable Subscribers,
By way of an update, we continue to devote tremendous time and resources to our negotiations with Time Warner Cable, with the hopes of reaching a fair deal. I assure you we are working days, nights and weekends and our efforts are focused on securing a contract. Unfortunately, we can not predict if, or when, we will reach a deal. In the meantime, it is important for you to know that you can still access our stations’ programming. Time Warner subscribers can receive our stations’ analog and high-definition signals over the air by using an antenna or through another multi-channel provider. As you know, we have reached deals with all other major cable, satellite and telecommunications companies, all of whom recognize that they must pay for a product that they resell to their customers for a profit. Thank you for all of your tremendous support. Our stations provide a valuable product and we are proud of what we can offer the local community.

What kind of internet do you get with a dish? I had DSL before and could only get about 1.2 Mbps because I live so far away so that is out. I get about 5-6 Mbps with Time Warner/Earthlink. U-Verse is not available and will probably never be where I live.

We switched to AT&T during the Ike outage. It’s cheaper for us w/the bundling & we don’t have to worry about losing phone service if the power goes out again. I notice zero difference in internet speed and our TV picture has never looked better. Customer service is not an oxymoron w/AT&T either. We’re so happy we made the switch!

Did the local franchising authority (LFA) approve this rate increase for basic service tier (24 channels)? It’s up to the local franchise authorities (i.e. Dayton, Kettering, Centerville, etc.) to set rates for the limited basic tier of service. What do they have to say about this? Or are they just going to keep mum on the subject? The only way TW can make their service more valuable is to stop forcing basic tier subscribers to upgrade service through price increase intimidation!

DirecTV is by far the best. Great channels, and customer service. The weather argument is nonsense. I’ve had it for years, and I can count on one hand how many times service has went out. I had service through the windstorm a few weeks ago. Time Warner didn’t in some places. The ONLY complaint I have is the locals not in HD. But, hopefully the guy is right in saying that they’ve FINALLY fixed that.

I have AT&T U-verse and it is awesome! I have it bundled Phone, Internet and TV. You can’t beat it! Unlike Michael says, the speed is comparable for internet as Cable is a share line in neighborhood and more people with TW internet the slower your connection gets. AT&T is a dedicated line. Plus you get a DVR for Free and can record 4 shows at once. Soon to expand to 6 or 8. I have not had one issue with it in the month I have had it. Professional installation of whatever connections you throughout your home. Value for Value it is better than TW and you get more HD and selection is just as good for the price. I like it better even than Dish network that I also had.

Cable can’t do anything to make me go back. I dropped TW in 2000 when they promised more channels. The only new channels I got were shopping and religion. I don’t watch either one, they also messed up the channel numbers ( channel 5 went to ch. 3, Ch 9 went to ch 11…etc) I switched to Direct and never looked back.

You people are just bitching and not answering the question. Cable would be better if we could chose which stations we wanted. These packaged deals are offered at a discount but then stations that the customers want are at a premium and to get those you must purchase a whole other package. I had to purchase one tier to get another. That’s not right and the stations I might watch in that tier are available unless I buy yet another tier. It wasn’t like this until I added my phone service.

For those talking about that AT&T U-verse, I just did some research on it, with prices and internet speeds. It is junk, not worth having. Do you like ten year old connection speeds? Come on< the rest of the world has 68mb connections yet, we are talking 3mb here, what is up with that? TW offers 15mb for about $56 a month, Zoomtown $25-30 for 5mb, At&t 3mb for $30. In Louisville, KY Insight has 20mb - that runs more like 27mb - for about $50, Bellsouth has 6-8mb for $35.

We switched to DISH two weeks ago and it is excellent. Many more HD channels at a much better price.
I called TW back in February and informed them that I was looking at switching services. At the time we paid $150 for cable (HD DVR) and Road Runner. By the end of the call they dropped my price to $97. How can a company drop a montly rate by $53? Because they are ripping people off, that is why.
I now have NBC with DISH and no threat of a rate increase….

Interesting story about TW and their fear of competition: Next-door neighbor moved out in Feb and a couple months later, TW disconnects their service for non-payment (the door hanger ended up in my yard). About a month ago, one of TW’s door-to-door salespeople left them a flyer with a handwritten note: “Sign back up with us and we’ll write-off your past-due balance” or words to that effect.

Now they are raising their rates 10 to 12 percent and still no NBC channel. Are you kidding me!!!Does Time Warner think that we are all so stupid that we wouldn’t notice. I find it egregious that Time Warner has the gall to implement a rate hike after deleting access to NBC and carrying a monopoly in certain cities in Montgomery County. In my area if we want the phone, internet and cable bundle, our only option is Time Warner. I wish there was some other option, but to do away with them means I lose all TV access when it all goes digital in February. I personally am tired of being victimized by Time Warner.

No…TW has to make up money for all the people who cancelled service because of the WDTN fiasco (even though they claim no one cancelled). You know TW technicians at my home actually told me that WDTN’s parent company is going bankrupt and they laid off 40% of their workforce and THAT was why they wanted more of a cut. But honestly $.03 a month per subscriber seems reasonable…especially when TW is gonna raise rates by a lot more than that! Guaranteed. I’ll be cancelling my service.
