WDTN-TV back on Time Warner Cable just in time for sweeps

By John Nolan, James Cummings

Staff Writers

Thursday, October 30, 2008

DAYTON — Time Warner Cable and LIN TV Corp. agreed to return programming from WDTN-TV Channel 2 to cable just in time for the November sweeps.

That's probably not a coincidence, said two local media professors.

Sweeps are programming periods where counts of viewers watching various stations are used to set advertising rates. David Baxter, a communication lecturer at Wright State University, said the November sweeps are the most important of four yearly sweeps periods, so keeping viewership up at this time of year is critical.

"About 68 percent of homes get their television through cable, and no local station wants to be off the cable system during sweeps month," Baxter said.

Time Warner announced the deal Wednesday morning, Oct. 29. It ended a four-week standoff.

LIN had demanded that Time Warner pay it for carrying local signals of LIN-owned television stations. Time Warner balked, saying it was trying to control costs for its cable subscribers.

Baxter said the dispute reflects a confrontation that's developing between the cable industry and television stations all over the country. He said TV stations argue that cable systems shouldn't be able to take their programming without payment and then charge cable customers a fee to receive the programming. The cable industry counters that they shouldn't have to pay TV stations for programming that's available free over the air.

Both Baxter and Jim Farrelly, an English, media and pop culture professor at the University of Dayton, said Time Warner was in a position of power and probably came out on top.

"I think WDTN is getting some feedback already that its ratings are slipping because the station is not on the cable system," Farrelly said. "I wasn't willing to set up a television with an antenna just to get Channel 2, and I don't think a lot of other people were either."

Spokespeople for Time Warner Cable and LIN declined to reveal details of the agreement.

Did you miss your NBC shows?

What if The WDTN 2 channel 9 and the WDTN 2 in HD channel 702 goes out again? Then I’m going back to WHIO 7 channel 7 or WHIO 7 in HD channel 707 at anytime.

Yes it was a WDTN 2 Blues during in October of 2008 and that was right after the September 14, 2008 Windstorm. We had to watch the doggone, disgusting, and boring The Early Show, and it was really disgusting. I wish WDTN 2 will be back, and The Today Show as well, and get back to it.

Can’t we all just get along. Sure TW has a list of shortcomings to long to mention here. And its not really there fault they have to charge so much for thier product. So what if Directv gives you much better picture and sound for alot less money. TW has still got those grainy analog signals to send to you. And the best part is when you pay there bill you get to squat down and grin real wide as you pee your pants.

Yes, I really did miss having WDTN on Cable. I have watched WDTN news shows since moving to the Miami Valley in 1975. They are like family and I miss the different personalities that deliver the news, weather, and sports. I feel they give a much better news report than WHIO, whose media people are bland and not nearing as interesting to watch and listen to each day. I am so happy to have the “gang” back on my T.V. early in the morning as I get ready for work and back on in the late afternoon

Brian, trust me, TW did not lose as much as WDTN. There may be people switiching but when I go in TW to pay my bill I see plenty switching back. I had satilate and could not wait until my contract was up so I could swich back, I had poor service, poor reception and a contract. With TW I have had good service a good pitcure, people ask me all the time if I have HD and no contract to be screwed over with. So maybe it isnt TW or WDTN who is the loser here, maybe it is the people who are switching.

Well I new low even for WDTN. I just got an email from them in regard to the viewer comments, they most have gotten the email address from this posting board. Any way it is supposently from the General Manager talking about be back on TW.

Well WDTN can kiss my a—, I am making good use of the rabitt ears I got from TW and getting the Cincinnati NBC, the nice thing about living in South Dayton. I will not watch WDTN as long as I can get another NBC station on my set.

Well, thank you for the recommendation Almighty Lea!!! You’re an absolute genious and live such a wonderful life only watching TV an hour a week.

I guess I WILL go feed the ducks with my kids. Wait…I don’t have any kids. And, I don’t like ducks - they’re dirty.

Get off your high horse.

I want to watch some football on Sunday night before a long week of work. TW blows for taking away something from our service and NOT dropping my monthly bill. So, I’m gone! Directv is getting installed next Saturday. It’s time to make a stand!

Karen - Again, you are so wrong. I do not lose my signal on cloudy days, what bull. My bill is the same as TW, but I get almost double the channels than I would get with TW and that includes the premium channels. The customer service is also 150% better than TW. TW doesn’t even know the definition of customer service.

Doc - I switched to DISH over 2 years ago. The best thing ever. My signal is rarely lost in a storm. We never even lost our signal once through the wind storm in September when TW was out for days.

Turn off the TV and go spend some quality time feeding the ducks with your kids. You know, those short little people that keep asking questions during your soaps?

Yeah, I have TWC, yeah, I hate paying for it, but I watch TV about an hour a month. Maybe. But you have to have the digital service to get Roadrunner. And as I have stated before that’s a requirement in my house. I’d rather read a book than watch TV anyway.

I hooked up an antenna for two shows, Sunday night football and one other show for the wife. Other than that I never watched NBC and didn’t miss it.

I hate TW, but they were in the right to let NBC hang themselves. If they offer it for free over the air, they shouldn’t try to charge for the customers THEY get being on the TW lineup. TW doesn’t need them, they need TW.

Kyle…I do not know what contract you entered into with TW. As far as I’m concerned, I didn’t enter into anything with them when I sighed up for service. If you are someone who wants to guarantee and price for 2 years, I guess you have but I didn’t. I can go as I please, just as TW can take channels away as they please. I’m still confused on what you are talking about with insurance. It doesn’t make any sense & is irrelivant when you are talking about defects from a car dealership.

Too late. I’ve cut all paid TV (I had to trim the fat because of the economy). Digital TV saves a ton of money and has more channels than TWC’s Tier 1. Plus, without the signal compression cable and satellite uses, it’s a much better picture and sound quality. But, best of all, IT’S THE ONLY THING IN AMERICA THAT’S FREE!!!

In response to “IS IT HIGH DEF”

It may or may not have been. There are a few questions that need asked.

What show was it (Not all shows broadcast in HD)

Is the TV you watched it on set to “stretch” the picture if it is not in 16:9?

What resolution of HD was the show in? (720 is HD but not as good as 1080, some shows only broadcast in 720 but will not look as good as the shows in 1080, like ESPN)

Have you ever notice that since WDTN has a black community affairs manger all the focus seems to be on black religous issues. don’t get me worng, there is nothing wrong with promoting those issues but Dayton is more then that and wDTN needs to focus on all of Daytons issues, not just one race.

FYI…for anyone thinking of switching over to AT&T U-verse…earliest install date was mid-December as of Monday. I called after thinking the date was wrong when trying to order on the internet and sure enough…mid-December was the earliest date available. BTW, it also takes 4-6 hours for U-Verse to be “custom” installed. AT&T should definitely have more techs out doing installs…that wait time is ridiculous.

TW does not give value for the money. The only reason I’m still on TW is I’m too lazy to call dish out. DIsh is cheaper and better. TWC has sucked since it was Continental Cable. Yes, some of my favorite programs are on Channel 2. But, this is like TW. They have steadily taken away stations such as ESPNC, SPEED, Hallmark, 3 of my most favored channels, while at the same time raising rates, as they are in the process of doing right now. They are, obviously, trying to force you to go to their digital channel at a yet-higher rate. It’s too bad we don’t have cable competition

TW Stays. I had DirecTV before and it is a lot more expensive. You people that are talking cheaper have no clue. First year yes, 2nd year and beyond look out. You did sign up for 2 years whether you know it or not. Most people have their own cable company horror stories. Allowing them to control local channels is allowing them to defecate on the first amendment.

There’s a time for reading and a time for “2News” on an overpriced cable network that is witholding the local nbc network that we are paying through the teeth for and is only fair LIN TV be compensated for TWC making money off WDTN’s signal. cont…want to pay. But you can’t in this situation. So unfortunately, the cost is shifted to the consumer, it is ALWAYS is. no company is going to eat additional cost. Food, gas, and a lot of other products cost more now and we are the ones pay for it. I do agree you should get good service that you expect for your money. Kyle…yes, I would also get annoyed if i had just bought a car and it broke down a week later. But I do not see that as the problem here. LIN TV wanted money from TW to carry ch2. There choice was to pay it or not. As in any business deal like this, you would work back and forth to come up with a deal, which they just did last night. Now, as a business owner, I can tell you that I am able to shop around for other service providers if that ones I am working with want more money and I do not…

“retransmission-consent deal is just one of several….To cite one big example, Time Warner is about to enter retransmission-consent negotiations with Univision, and will soon be starting negotiations with Fox Cable, including its regional sports channels; NBC Universal’s cable and broadcast outlets; and Discovery Communications; according to Pali Research analyst Rich Greenfield.”

Cable is a luxury, but we who purchased that luxury did so with an understanding of what we would receive for our money. A car is a luxury. You could take a bus. Like me, it appears many others perfer WDTN over the other stations. We get used to getting our news from the same source. We love the network programming. SNL, The Office, Leno… Take it away and we get pizzed. We’re glad it’s back. I recommend you go read a book now. May I suggest Psychology 101?

As already mentioned, cable is a luxury. You don’t have to have it. You want it. I understand you want to get good service for what you pay but reading the few comments on here about being on a fixed income…COME ON! If it’s that tight, why are you spending money on cable anyway? It’s your main source of entertainment? Get a hobby…some of them are free…read, do a puzzle, whatever. I’m so tired of all the negativity that is floating around now, with this and with the election.

It’s amazing what people will complain about. Cable is a luxury. It’s not required to live a full life. I have Time Warner and watch cable all the time. I love it but if I couldn’t have it for some reason, I would have to occupy my time some other way, like perhaps reading a book, which I also do all the time!!! There ARE other ways to get entertainment. I have had Time Warner for years. I’ve had very good experiences with them and some really bad experiences as well. Just like any other service

I am pleased WDTN is back on TW as well. Had to watch on small set w/rabbit ears. I’m wanting to switch too, but not sure of Dish. GF has Dish and when it rains/snows - no picture. NOT good. AT&T may be an option. Can I hear from dish owners how their service is during a storm? That’s the time people want to sit in front of their TV…during a storm. How is dish during a storm?

I wasn’t too worried about the WDTN situation, I always had an antenna hooked up to my TV to watch it and CW in HD anyways. I missed being able to DVR The Office, but I just watched it online if I missed it the last couple weeks. I am however going to get UVerse when it comes to my area. That new box they have that can hook up to 4 tvs and DVR 4 things at once looks amazing.

Cont’d - If not for the business and the desperate need for broadband we’d go back to dialup or DSL and rabbit ears. But as it turns out it’s cheaper to have the digital package, phone, internet included than separate phone and broadband. So if I cancel it all I end up paying the cancellation fee. I’m stuck. And I hate TWC. But what choice do I really have? Uverse isn’t available.

I think it is ashame that the LIN Co was the only group that wanted to be compensated and there fore deprived folks who love WDTN from seeing their shows news etc. None of the other channels wanted compensation and they are doing the same thing.

Time Warner as all businesses have their problems, but at least they were trying to be fair in this instance.

Last May I locked in the two year pricing agreement with TWC. Right after that they started playing with my rates, saying I was making long-distance calls on my home phone - I had long-distance blocked, or so I thought. However their customer service was horrible. When I finally wrote them a letter after being hung up on I told them to call during the day and since my husband works from home I told them to talk to him. They refused to and called me only during the day on weekdays.

Another reason to dislike TWC. Imagine if I shoplifted groceries and then resold them to my neighbors ‘to keep their food costs down’.

This is the lamest explanation of greed I’ve heard since TWC’s last rate hike.

Ann, Nice reading comprehension skills. The terms of the contract don’t allow the parties to disclose any information about their agreement. Therefore, WDTN wouldn’t “be bragging up a blue strick (sic)” as you put it. Your conclusion is flawed.

Me, I’ll just be happy if TWC doesn’t jack up my rates, the pirates!

I went to WDTN’s web site where they talked about an agreement being reached. If TW was the one who caved in WDTN would be bragging up a blue strick. As it is, they just stated an agreement had been reached. I think WDTN caved so they wouldn’t lose all their advertising dollors.

I am glad that Channel 2 is back. I prefer their weather and while I don’t watch a lot of NBC shows, it is nice to have access to full network coverage. It is my understanding that AT&T charges you for every service call. I have only had two service calls with TW in the past 10 years but there is no history to snow how many service calls would be required of AT&T. To each their own.

I never saw anything that said TW caved in. It just said an agreement was reached. WDTN was the one really hurting. Look at all the potential visablity and revenue they were losing. TW still is the major player in this area despite all the new players. Over time they may lose the size of share they have but they will never lose the bog dog status. Was cable in in your apartment or house when you bought it? Bet so. I bet there was not a dish on your house. This makes cable easier. We like easy!!!

By Tomas

This was extortion by Lin and now that TWC has caved in, the rest of the over-the-air stations will want money to carry their signals and guess where that money will come from? TWC should have brought another NBC station into the channel 2 place. That might have forced Lin to quit being greedy.

I, for one, am glad WDTN is back on, if only because it’s always been there. I don’t really watch that channel too often, but it was part of the original line-up, and I did like the weather forecasts. I’m not a big fan of TW, but we haven’t had many problems with them, so I’m fairly satisfied. I guess my main problem with the TW versus WDTN stand-off was the fact that I couldn’t understand why WDTN wanted TW to pay them to carry their signal, when people could get WDTN for free with an antenna.

I have DirecTV and am amazed at the picture quality of the local stations. I get a clearer picture on Direct for 2 then I ever did with TW, which is kinda funny, here’s why. The locals have to dish or T1 their signals to Castle Rock, Colorado to the DirecTV uplink facility and then DirecTV then uplinks to the customer. So by means of Colorado I get a clearer picture then with TW right here in the area.

The timing of this was so obvious and exactly as one would have expected. The official fall sweeps period for local television starts tomorrow. Up to this point there would have been little economic urgency for LIN TV to settle. However, they need the rating numbers from the sweeps period to susptain ad revenue. Time-Warner knew this as well and just waited them out.

This was all so ridiculous and should have never happened. I don’t think time Warner will bounce bad after this. As far as their rate increases, they will only loose more subscribers. It was only a matter of putting an antenna on our TV and switching back and forth between cable and on air using the remote and we could get the channel 2 broadcast for free. Great, just in time for Obama on SNL this saturday. Plus, ER, the GREATEST MEDICAL SHOW OF ALL TIME, is back on the air. I would switch to satellite, but I can’t stand that SLOW, SLOW DSL INTERNET!

I’m so glad that WDTN is finally back, and I really miss it for a while, Especially The Bonnie Hunt Show. I really love The Bonnie Hunt Show, Because that has a jazz house band that I like the most.

I have been in contact with Direct TV in the past checking on packages and this is the straw that broke the Camels back. I’m switching to Direct TV and back to ATT DSL.

I’m just plain tired of Time Warner and their business practices.

I’m no longer an unhappy Time Warner customer. I was at my breaking point, but resolution is just in time before I was going to pursue a switch to AT&T. I got to flash back to the 70s with the free rabbit ears they sent so I could watch the election comedy on SNL. It was ridiculous not to have NBC!

Whether you are with DirecTV or Time Warner, you are going to get rate increases. I just recently switched back to TW from Direct because every 3-4 months it seemed as though my bill was going up. At least TW guaranteed my rates for the next 2 years, which Direct won’t do. They won’t even offer a price decrease when you call to terminate unless you bundle with their phone service (AT&T) which is useless to those of us already with AT&T.

If I had the Choice of TW giving us the HBO Family Channel or 2. WDTN could go away and never come back. Frankly, my family enjoyed HBO Family so much that we are thankful that WDTN didn’t sign until now and wish they would have stayed away until after the Holidays.

Oh well, I am one happy new Direct TV customer! And I am very glad I did not wait! How many customers did you lose to Direct TV and Dish Network while you were playing poker standoff? You knew about this long before it happened, so really how much did you lose? And now you want your customers to make up the loss with your new increased rates!!!!

What kind of Bozo’s are running Time Warner? - Very few HD stations compared to competitors Direct TV & AT&T - Great, TW now has WDTN-NBC back, but still no NBC HD like the rest of the country enjoys - No NFL Network - No NFL package offering - Last years debacle with no Big Ten Network

Time to change.

Its amazing to see how many ignorant people there are in Dayton, especially Walt. You shouldn’t be allowed to vote, your IQ is probably a little less than mayonnaise. Yes, Time Warner is a thief. AT&T is not much better. I’ve had their service since it became available in my area, and all it ever does is drop service. I lost service 15 times in a 24 hour period. That means no television or internet service. Nice user interface though.

I am glad to see WDTN back on air this morning. However, at the cost of a price increase. Like people aren’t have a hard enough time as it is. I’m still considering switching to DirecTV. TW probably had to hike up their prices to cover the business/money/customers they lost because of all this. Don’t be surprised if it won’t go up again in 6 more months. If they can wait that long.

Save yourself this hassle all around and order AT&T U-Verse. it has over 50 high def channels and you can record up to 4 programs at once. All of the local stations are already in high def and have been there the whole time. Among many other cool features.

Good bye Time-Warner. I will be adding thirty four new channels, none of them shopping or religious related but pure entertainment content, and I will be paying roughly $31 less. Burn me for fourteen years, shame on you, burn me one more month, shame on me.

It’s business people. If you have a company that is damanding that you now start paying for something, what else are you going to do? Either drop that service, or increase the rates to consumers. It’s happening all over the place…gas, food, clothing. It’s nothing different. Now, I admit, I haven’t followed this closely but from what’s been made clear is that LIN TV wanted more money. Any business owner would understand that the cost needs to come from somewhere. This isn’t anything new.

I can’t believe that it was taken off the air, first of all.TW is a big joke. My family enjoyed the HBO station there was some good movies. But what really got me angry was the fact that while, not having this LOCAL channel we as TW customers are told that the bill will be higher next month. It is something, this dumb to get me to want a diffrent way to get what I want to watch at a lower price. Thank You TW

Didn’t miss it. With the writers strike last year ending a lot of the good shows early, I turned to doing other things besides being a couch potato in front of the TV. Not much on regular TV these days anyways. Very few shows that attract my attention. The HBO family channel was enjoyed by others who probably don’t usually watch WDTN.

Walt - How does something that has to do with WDTN and Time Warner Cable relate to Republicans?? Let’s try to stick with the subject. I know you’re getting scared with the election only 6 days away, but that has NOTHING to do with this article. Go to your liberal blogs and post your Obama-loving comments there.

Didn’t miss it, and if Time Warner raises my rate for something I don’t care to see I’ll leave them. I also have no interest in AT&T or Dish - it’s just more of the same garbage. I got rid of DVR when TWC charged me three fees per box per month - access, service, and guide fees.

What I’d like to have isn’t in Dayton at all - I can’t GET Verizon’s fiber optic service here. I’ve seen it in Florida, and it makes ALL the local services look like dirt by comparison.

I resented Time Warner “Giving” me a channel I was already paying for with the HBO Family channel. They took a channel off the air we as subscribers paid for and gave everyone a channel some subscribers paid for without any adjustment in our HBO fees. Where is the High Def WDTN Channel? I looked for it but nothing as of yet! I would also like to subscribe to the NFL channel but it isn’t offered either. I’ll soon be a former Time Warner subscriber.

Walt - that is the dumbest thing I’ve heard yet. The Republicans are the REAL culprits behind the financial debate with Time Warner and WDTN? Even if it WERE true in some dimension, wouldn’t the Republicans have tried to shut down FOX rather than WDTN? That’s where Obama’s little 30 minute ad is happening. But what am I saying? Everything is the Republican’s fault. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor? Has to be Bush’s fault. Oh wait, he wasn’t born yet. Does it even matter?

I didn’t really miss WDTN when it was gone. If I wanted to watch a show it was always available online. But now that we have it back Time Warner is raising their rates 12%. What will make me switch to satellite is that TW gave in and now I have to pay more because LIN can’t seem to run a business well.

I cant say I missed WDTN local programming though I figured with sweeps month starting this Friday, WDTN would make a deal. At least the HD signal will now be available. A big raspberry to WDTN for holding the consumer hostage the past 6 weeks and depriving us from watching the Olympics in HD.

I gave up on Time Warner about 18 months ago and I’m so glad I did! I have Directv and never have any complaints about them. My parents use TW and it’s horrible. The guide is slow and the channel lineup is terrible for the price they pay. I will never use TW for any services in my house again. I am delighted to say that I never once had to go without any of my shows on NBC because Directv never had problems showing that channel. Enjoy your rate hikes TW customers!

I rather enjoyed the HBO Family Channel, I would rather have it than being able to watch Oprah or SNL. I guess I should be ready to see my rates increase. I was fine with using the rabbit ears and getting NBC for free. I would even get a convertor box to receive the signal in January instead of paying any non cable station money. I always give money to PBS because they ask me, not take away my signal if I do pay.

Is this the local crime load demanding payment because this is their territory. They already had an excusive agreement not to let TWC to also show the NBC station out of Cinn.

I am all for making a profit, but come on, this greed.

As happy as I am to have WDTN back on Time Warner (I haven’t watched the over-the-air signal at all) I think the people that really got hurt by this ‘standoff’ were the advertisers, since they likely had to pay full price while getting only half the audience.
