Fifth Third to get new address downtown

DAYTON — Fifth Third Bank Western Ohio will relocate its downtown headquarters operations to One Dayton Centre in late 2009, the bank said Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The building, located at Third and Main streets, will be renamed Fifth Third Center and the company will occupy 60,000 square feet in the building, according to a news release.

The bank currently has its regional headquarters and a branch office at 110 N. Main St.

In a prepared statement, Ray Webb, president and chief executive of Fifth Third Western Ohio, said the bank remains committed to keeping its offices in downtown Dayton.

"We are looking forward to relocating into our new home as it will be a great move for both our customers and our employees," Webb said.

Plans call for the bank to move its commercial, private and business banking; mortgage banking; retail; and human resources operations to the 21-story office tower.

Spokesman Chuck Edmonson said Fifth Third's lease on its current space ends in November.

In addition to its bank branch, the company has offices on the second through seventh floors, he said. Plans call for Fifth Third to occupy four floors, Edmonson said, adding that "we actually need less space for the same employees as we are somewhat spread out currently."

Longer term, the company hasn't decided whether it will keep its downtown branch in the North Main Street building, move it to the new building or pursue a third option, Edmonson said.

The move will mark a return of Fifth Third to 1 S. Main St. The bank previously had its regional headquarters in One Dayton Centre, but moved to the building on North Main Street in 1998 after it acquired CitFed Bancorp for $740 million, renaming the latter building Fifth Third Center.
