Tenneco lays off about 100 Kettering employees

KETTERING — Auto parts producer Tenneco is laying off 90 to 100 workers at its plant off Woodman Drive.

Jane Ostrander, a company spokeswoman, said employees were informed last week.

The reason is simple, Ostrander said. General Motors Corp. is the plant's largest customer, and GM is cutting production. The automaker said last week that it will cut production in North America by 30 percent in the first quarter of 2009.

"We're tied to our customers' production schedules," she said.

The Kettering plant had about 310 workers before the layoffs, Ostrander said. Delphi owns the plant and ended its work there, leasing part of the facility — about 930,000 square feet — to Tenneco earlier this year. Lake Forest, Ill.-based Tenneco also bought ride control components and plant machinery from Delphi when it moved into the plant.
