Local health center $5.5 million expansion on schedule

TROY — Upper Valley Medical Center's Behavioral Health Services is on schedule to complete a $5.5 million expansion by August or September that will house its adult inpatient unit and crisis center.

The 8,000-square-foot expansion adjoining the current youth services building on the UVMC campus will house 21 adult psychiatric beds, up four from the 17 existing beds at Dettmer.

Those in the adult and youth services areas will share facilities such as a gymnasium and courtyard space, but such use will be at separate times.

The project also includes the remodeling of about 9,000 square feet in the youth services building that had been vacant, said Keith Achor, UVMC vice president.

The adult inpatient unit is the last such unit that's housed in an older building on the UVMC campus between Troy and Piqua, Achor said. Once the unit moves into its new housing, all of the hospital system's inpatient services will be housed in buildings constructed in the past 15 years, Achor said.

The new expansion will have a mix of rooms housing one to two patients.

The crisis center provides round-the-clock services for those dealing with emotional or mental health issues in Miami, Shelby and Darke counties.

UVMC's security offices also will be in the expanded building.

The Dettmer building, where Behavioral Health Services adult patients are currently housed, will continue to house administrative offices, outpatient services and the Miami County Mental Health Center.

The project contractor is Brackett Builders of Troy. The architect is App Architecture of Englewood.
