Stansell, Weatherhead, South, Hoelscher Score in Kil-Kare Season Opener

Xenia, OH (4/8/11) - After having the season opener weathered-out last week, Kil-Kare Speedway officially opened the new season of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Friday night. By nights end Shawn Stansell, Derek Weatherhead,Mike South Jr.,Bo Hoelscher had scored feature wins.
The 30 lap Late model feature had Shawn Stansell and Terry Scherz leading the field to the green with Stansell holding a slight lead but Scherz was not giving up easily and took the front spot on lap three but defending champ Don Mahaffey was on the move. Mahaffey was chasing third place running Dick Dunlevy when the caution came out when Bobby Justus spun on turn one.
On the restart Stansell sailed by Scherz for the lead but the caution came back out on lap seven when Scherz and Heckam tangled on turn two and Jeff Marsh stopped on the frontstretch. Stansell had the lead on the restart wit Mahaffey riding his bumper followed by Dunlevy and Shawn Stroble.
Stansell did a great job holding the lead as the top six cars ran almost bumper to bumper. Bob Sibila nosed around Stroble for fifth only to spin, bringing out the caution. This now put rookie Brandon Oakley up to fifth as Stroble was sent to the tail. Bobby Justus was challenging Oakley when he and Siblia tangled on turn four with Siblia knocked out of action. Stansell again held on to the lead on the restart as Mahaffey went to the outside but Stansell shook him off with Dunlevy riding right behind Mahaffey and Oakley following.
The caution flew on lap twenty five when Mahaffey apun coming out of turn four and was dropped to the rear. Now it was veteran Dick Dunlevy on the tail of young Stansell with the rookie Oakley third and Stroble fourth with Scherz fifth.
With the checker in the air Shawn Stansell claimed his first ever late model feature as he led Dick Dunlevy, Brandon Oakley, Shawn Stroble, and Terry Scherz across the line.
Veteran Sam Heckman and former legend car driver Terry Scherz sat on the front row of the first late model heat. Heckman had the lead but Shawn Stansell tried the outside route to take command on lap five. Dick Dunlevy and Shawn Stroble battled for third with Stroble stealing third as Stansell took the win with Heckman second.
The second late model heat had Russ Bobb and Terry Humphrey setting the pace and when the green waved it was the two veterans running side by side with Bob Sibila trying to figure a way to get through the two. Sibila then took second and went to work on Bobb taking the lead to claim the win with Bobb second and Bobb Justus third.
The first modified feature of the season had Jerry Stapleton and Derek Weatherhead leading the pack to the green. Stapleton had a slight lead going into turn two but Weathehead took the front marker on lap two as Mike Carroll and fast timer Greg Stapleton was closing in on second running Stapleton. Weatherhead enjoyed a good lead while it remained a three car battle for second. The field was slowed when Grant Gamble spun on the frontstretch enabling the chasers to close the gap on Weatherhead. Weatherhead continued to lead as the Stapleton’s fought for second with uncle Jerry holding off cousin Greg lap after lap. The caution flew again on lap eighteen when Jerry Stapleton spun on turn one.
On the restart it was now a battle for the lead between Weatherhead and Greg Stapleton with Carroll right behind. With five laps to go it was still the same running order with Ryan Fleming and Jason Mahaffey not far behind. As the checker waved it was Vandalia’s Weatherhead taking the win with Greg Stapleton second followed by Mike Carroll, Ryan Fleming, and Jason Mahaffey.
In heat racing it was the modifieds hitting the track first to face starter Don Beddies green flag with Jerry Stapleton and Derek Weatherhead leading the field. Stapleton took the lead with Mike Carroll and Weatherhead running side by side for second. Carroll then went to the outside to pull up on Stapleton as they ran side by side. Carroll stole the lead on lap five leaving Stapleton to hold off Weatherhead with Carroll taking the win followed by Stapleton and Weatherhead.
The second heat had Grant Gamble and veteran Terry Humphrey in the front row with Humphrey quickly taking the lead but Ryan Fleming and Brad Williams was giving him a run for the money. Lap five had the yellow fly when Williams and Humphrey made contact with Humphrey spinning and both sent to the rear. Fleming continued to lead on the restart to take the win over Bill Burba and Brad Williams.
Bob Stansell and Mike South Jr. started in the front row of the sport stock feature with Stansell taking the front spot as fast timer Travis Digges and South ran side by side with Shawn Stansell riding a close fourth. Tyler Mahaffey brought the caution out on lap six when he spun on turn two. Right after the green reappeared the caution flew again when Shawn Stansell spun on turn three. It was a three car battle for the lead after the restart as South took command with Digges right behind and here came Shawn Stansell up to third. South stayed in front as the laps wound down as the trio still ran almost bumper to bumper. Stansell tried the outside and passed Digges for second as the checker flew it was South the winner and stansell second with Digges third. Bob Stansell was fourth and Tyler Mahaffey fifth.
Rounding out the night was the the 20 lap compact feature on the big track with Paul Holley and Dustin Smith with Holley out front but it didn’t last long as Bo Hoelscher shot intothe lead but her e came Matt Stone to take second with Ryan Tamborro running third. At the halfway it was Hoelscher, Stone, Tamborro, Gary Williams, and Holley the top five. Stone was reeling in Hoelscher as the laps wound down but it was Hoelscher claiming the win followed by Stone, Tamborro, Williams, and Bryan Lynch.
Kil-Kare officials thank all the fans for coming out on such a cool night and look forward to a full season of activity at the Greene County facility.

I think I might have raced with some of the drivers GRAND-dads as some names sound like ones I knew way back when! Dick Dunlevy, and the Stapleton’s! This would have been in the earley 50’s. Bill
