Pontecorvo dance moves to Springboro
The Pontecorvo Ballet School and Gem City Ballet will relocate from downtown Dayton to Springboro on Jan. 3, 2011.
The move from a building across from Fifth Third Field at 534 First St. in Dayton to a renovated 14,500-square- foot building in Springboro has been planned for several months.
One of the Dayton area’s leading schools of classical ballet, PBS will have an open house from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at the new location, which is the former Malachi’s and Chantrell’s banquet center at 20 Commercial Way. Classes begin Monday, Jan. 3.
The facility has three dance studios totalling 6,000 square feet, set and costume shops and parking for more than 100 cars. Two of the studios can be converted into a performance space with seating for up to 120.
Gem City Ballet, which is affiliated with the school and is also directed by founder Barbara Pontecorvo, gives an annual performance at the Victoria Theatre in Dayton.

How stupid is that? Ballet is a city thing, NOT a exburb way! Would like to know why and who made this decision?

What an unfortunate comment to make. Most of the young dancers are from the suburbs, not the city. Additionally, if you have been in the current space you know that it is small and that parking is virtually non-existent, especially during the Dragon’s season. Additionally, this will allow the studio the opportunity to perform in house rather than renting out spaces throughout the Dayton area. My congratulations to Barbara and her staff & students, I for one am looking forward to seeing the company grow with their new opportunity.

Karon, you must be confused. If you like certain things, like ballet, you will go wherever they are. Cities have no monopoly on culture. Besides, you don’t go anywhere a train does not go!
