Esiason to Bengals: Get rid of Ochocinco
Former Bengal great Boomer Esiason isn’t buying what Chad Ochocinco is selling.
I happened to briefly tune-in to the Pro Bowl on radio Sunday night just as Esiason was talking about the Bengals and Ochocinco.
Boomer said that he’s “not a fan of Ochocinco” and that Chad is all about Chad — not the team. He went on to say how he believes Chad’s antics leading up to games each week — like trash-talking defensive backs — get other teams focused because they don’t want to be shown up.
He said the Bengals should part ways with Ochocinco now, but pointed out that head coach Marvin Lewis probably doesn’t have the authority to cut or even properly discipline Chad because of heavy handed owner Mike Brown.
Boomer talked about how teams like the Cowboys and Eagles got better after they got rid of a wide receiver with a similar personality, Terrell Owens.
I’m not sure if I agree with Boomer on this, but I have always valued and respected his opinion. He had a weekly radio show on 700 WLW for years that I listened to religiously.
Boomer always defended the Bengals and came across as someone who truly wants what’s best for the club and its fans. That makes me wonder how much of an asset or liability the Ocho really is.

Esiason is an idiot. These players get payed to be focused when they show up to games. Chad’s smack talk does not change how the players play.

Boomer hit it on the nose! I personally am sick of hearing of Johnson’s antics and would rather hear @ the guys that are focused on the TEAM winning. He’s a distraction and YES his trash talking is counterproductive. Anyone that has PLAYED the game knows that!

Boomer is right, Chad AND Carson should be be cut loose. I learned yesterday that of all multiyear contracted players in the nfl, Palmer is currently the highest paid at just over 16 mil. a year. That’s just wrong. Both of these guys stink.

They need to start the rebuild process at WR now. Chad couldn’t beat the premiere corners in the league so we need to get a couple that can. Free agency and the draft would be good. Trade Chad for a pick NOW!!!

Boomer has been a Bengal hater ever since he retired from football. Rarely does he have anything good to say and always picks against the team. Why get rid of the only receiver Palmer is comfortable throwing to and consistently leads the Bengals in receiving? The difference between TO and Chad is that Chad has fun with his antics and means no harm to anyone whereas TO is a pompous . Letting Chad go would be the worst move this franchise could make right now!

Boomer who??? Seriously who gives a rat’s butt what this idiot says? He obviously hates the Bengals and has ever sine he left the team. As crappy a QB as he was it’s a miracle we made it to the Super Bowl with him. He thought every receiver he had was as tall as Shaquille O’Neal since he threw every ball about 5 ft above the receivers’ heads.

I have to agree on getting rid a Chad, hes in the last year of his contract and he nor the Bengals will resign after this year, but,I would wanna trade him at draft day and see if I couldnt get some compensation before just letting him go for nothing after this year, lets face it Chad got it handed to him this year,he had multiple games with 2 or fewer catches, and poor Palmer, have you ever seen so many drops and fumbles outta your recievers and hear Palmer is washed up..I mean come on,wouldnt you bet the house on Palmer never havin a game with just 1 catch the whole game?

Great idea Boomer! Yes, get rid of your #1 receiver when the team is already short at least 2 wide receivers… The Bengals over paid for the barely competent Coles and are stuck with him. They instead need to focus on Carson’s obvious issues and finding a deep threat to stretch the field. Chad’s ego carries to the field. He’s prideful and a hard worker. If you don’t like the antics, tune them out.

As a Bengals fan, I gotta go with the “Boomer is an Idiot” crowd…I’ve never in my life seen a guy who disappeared in big games as much as Esiason did, and I seem to recall him blowing up the team by laying in front of busses and keying cars in 1987, so I don’t see where his opinion on anyone’s commitment to ‘the team” is relevant!

Who gives a damn what Boomer has to say? Boomer is the second most OVERRATED ATHLETE IN CINCINNATE SPORTS HISTORY behind Sean Casey. Chad has the “community and the inner city” behind him and Boomer has the media behind him full of non athletes who are just jealous of a black man who doesnt give a dman what Boomer and the media has to say so that pisses them off. Chad take a clue from Chuck D and the group Public Enemy “HELL WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY”. Make the people who support you happy and p**s off the people who dont like you because the dont write the checks who make you a millionaire. Big Bank takes little Bank everytime. Remember who has your back Chad and it isnt the media haters or Boomer lovers.

Ok in regards to Chad, I actually like Chad, He annoys me at times because I do think it is about him. However, If the Bengals were smart they would entertain trade offers for him. He is in the last year of his deal and if they are ever going to get something for him now is the time. On the other hand he is our #1. My opinion is that next years schedule is brutal and the likelihood of us repeating is low. It is a 50/50 call. Personally I would listen to offers but I wouldnt jump unless a great trade was presented. As for Carson, Folks go back and watch the games. Sure he didnt play great but for god’s sake he was always under pressure. Watch the superbowl and look at how Peyton and Brees are protected, look at how Brady, Rivers and others are too. this games comes down to the trenches and frankly our oline is not a very good pass protecting oline. Not to mention he doesnt have a ton of weapons to throw to so teams can blitz and cover us one on one alot or double chad with safety help. Give him weapons and some time and he will be fine. He doesnt trust this oline and honestly I dont blame Carson he gets hit a ton. Until that is fixed you could have Montana back there and it wouldnt matter. They need to keep improving the oline and add weapons underneath and to stretch the field. IE: Deep threat WR and speed threat underneath

Funny how all of the backers of this clown go after someone who speaks the TRUTH. Johnson is a flat out LOSER. If he had one ounce of concern about his teammates or the team, he’d lead the world in all categories. In contrast, he only wants to put on a show to bring attention to himself. That’s the only type of player he is & has ever been.

I have said for years that Chad must go. Chad is about Chad. Look at the great receivers, they were annonymous until the end of the game when their play stood out. Jerry Rice, Lynn Swann, Michael Irvin, Marvin Harrison. When you look at the teams in the Super Bowl this year, you don’t know their receivers exist. Finally, tell me a big game against top defensive talent that Chad was the difference. Chad must go. Get something for him now before others realize he is all mouth and little talent. He cannot get away from the physical bump at the line. Chad must go.

I disagree with Boomer, Chad likes to have fun but play hard. I love what he does, and he does this to in part to donate money. He has gotten away from doing his antics on the field where it cost the team a penalty. If he gets the other team fired up, so be it maybe some of his teammates should get fired up too. He has a great heart and love for the team, game, and is still a vaulable asset to the team. Jeff and Tony make great points too. I’m finding that it seems like there are just a lot of negative people in ohio between Bengals and Bluejacket fans!

All you have to do is read the comments of the chad haters to understand why white athletes who are considered “gamers”, “guys who do more with less”, “guys who get their shirts dirty but arent half the athletes as Chad85” get major love from the white majority media. It’s probably why Tracey Jones, Sean Casey, Josh hamilton, adam Rosales, Ryan freel and Pete rose are so beloved in white middle America/mayberry America. And you wonder why Cincinnati has the reputation it has around the country as being a racist bigoted city.

Boomer should just shut the F…k up. Don’t care what he thinks. Chad is doing a good job of setting himself up for the future getting his name out in different non-tradition media. Smart self-marketing, but better on-field performance is the best marketing. At least he’s never been arrested (that we know of) for drugs, DUI, hustling teenage girls or weapons possession.

People are saying “Chad is in it for Chad” and he doesn’t care about the Bengals. I’m sure you people do realize that he took a bus trip down to Miami, stopping at various Food Banks to donate and cook food for under-privileged people. Who are you going to replace Chad with if you all get your wish? Jerome (bust) Simpson? Maurice Purify? Quan Cosby? Chad has more Pro Bowls and TD catches than those guys will ever have combined in their careers. Someone said “Look at the teams in the Super Bowl, you don’t know their receivers exist”. You’ve never heard of Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Marques Colston, or Reggie Bush? Maybe they don’t get the publicity because THEY HAVE A GOOD QUARTERBACK. Palmer hasn’t been the same since his injury and is showing signs of aging. Make sure you all jump right back on the bandwagon once the Bengals are winning again and Chad is performing well.

I have always been a believer that the Bungals can do better without Chad Johnson or Ochocinco or whatever he calls himself next. Co-workers are big Bengal fans and they are in denial justlike “Ace and The Black Night”. Im sure Chad is a wonderful, thoughtfull, caring passionate and fun loving kind hearted person but as a football player he hurts his team with his antics and his selfishness. He has the skill level of Terrell Owen and Randy Moss who were both cancers to their teams at one time or another. Believe it or not quaulity wide recievers are a dime a dozen (Chad Johnson) and unique quality recievers (Jerry Rice) are rare and only come around so often. We found Miles Austin on our bench and Im sure the Bengals have one of his tallent or to be honest they probably have one better if they looked…

Yes Chad likes attention on the field. But this is because he is an entainer and is having fun. All of you calling him an a*****e and such have no idea. This man does as much or more for charity than any present or previous Bengal. And he does it because he wants to. The only press he gets from these acts are from the people or families that he helps. Just as an example locally ask the Kernisch family what kind of guy Ocho really is. Some of you need to learn about a man and not judge him on his television personality.

I’d for once like to see somebody go after one of the real sources of encouraging and inciting bad behavior in pro sports - the agents. What do the following self absorbed lads - Plaxico Burress, Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, Kellen Winslow Jr, and Jeremy Shockey, ALL have in common? They’re all represented by Drew Rosenhaus.

Wake up? If you dont believe “race” plays a role in Cincinnati sports you must not be from these parts. Cincinnati has always, always been known for being a somewhat racist city. Especially when it comes to black athletes and those who dont follow the party line. It’s the reason Ryan freel and josh hamilton are accpeted in the white community but someone like Chad who doesnt smoke crack or shot herion like Josh hamilton or get 2 dui’s liek Ryan freel takes so much heat for having a personality or buying a truck for his birthday. White people (some white people) in this town hate seeing a black man with more money and fame than they will ever have in their lifetime. I’m sorry but that is the truth. Ask barry larkin, he still gets heat for tearing the captain’s “C” off of his uniform while pot smoking, non child support paying athletes like Tom browning who spent time in jail for not paying child support still gets love from the media and fans like he is still “Mr. perfect”. And dont get me started of po trash, lying A$$ Pete Rose. The man lied to you for 16 years and you fools still camp outside th day before to get this bums autograph. Only in Cincinnati could taht be possible. But Chad is a bad guy because he doesnt get in trouble, doesnt smoke crack and hasnt gone to jail. Explain that one to me? You cant other than what is pointed out in the very begining. The best part is Marvin Lewis and Mike brown know the value of Chad and arent willing to cowher to the “teabagber type fans” who make up a large percentage of Cincinnnati and the media. The truth hurts but that is the truth. There is a reason the sports media in this town looks alot like the GOP convention.

Yes. Get rid of him. That’s how we get better in 2010, by getting rid of our only viable reciever. We need fewer weapons, not more. Reverse psychology, right? We can start all over with a rookie third rounder and expect him to be our savior immediately. Let’s dump Ced Benson, Leon Hall and J-Joe while we’re at it. This is why this team never wins. Because we don’t boot our good players fast enough.

A lot of you are saying he’s all about “Chad” and not about “Team”. If that’s true, why aren’t any of his TEAMMATES complaining? Because it’s simply not true. He gives fans more access than any other sports personality. And he gives his time and money off the field to the community. He doesn’t drink and gets in no trouble. I’m not sure what else you can ask for from a professional athlete? He’s turned me into a Bengals fan. But if y’all don’t want him, we’ll be MORE than happy to take him here in St. Louis! Chad85 on offense and Ndamukong Suh on defense. We might win more than one game next year!!!!

While I liked Boomer as a player, he is dead wrong on this one. Chad is in no way like T.O. Owens constantly threw his teammates under the bus, whereas Chads antics are purely comical and harmless. Like any Bengal we get rid of, should we do so with Chad , he would ultimately come back to haunt us.

LOL. At the moment, Chad is the only WR on the team - though Caldwell looked good toward the end of the season. As for Team first, maybe the Team (and fanbase) has to suck it up and live with Chad. With Chad, 10-6 div title. w/o him: 7-9. BTW, I’ll take 72 catches for 1047 yds and 9 TDs from my #1 receiver every year.

I think Chad is good for the Bengals, football is football, but entertainment is the name of the game and Chad has done a good job of it this past year. Carson Palmer is over-rated as a quarterback, he’ll never be in the same league as Payton Manning and Brett Farve. He can’t pull out the big ones like they do. As far as the Bengals go, they were lucky to play as well as they did this past year. They’ll go back to normal next year and play just as bad as the Cleveland Browns!

I TOTALLY agree with Boomer. I have never been a Bengal’s fan (as the team I support currently has 6 Super Bowl rings), however, in his day, Boomer was the only Bengal player I thought was a class act on and off the field. Ochocino should be forced to wear the name OchoStinko. He is a disgrace to the NFL with his publicity stunts, etc. I have heard he is supposedly a good person who supports the youth of today. If that’s the case, he should portray that ON THE FIELD AS WELL.

comparing TO and Chad: Eagles had great year when TO was first on team, he earned a lot of respect from all over by working so hard at recovery and then still playing so well though still hurt in playoffs. personality collisions were fatal to Eagles and split the team not on racial lines but on who was the STAR. It took TO getting known as disruptive and for him to finally blame himself in part for him to grow up but it took 3 teams to do it and his abilities have faded much. Chad may find that out a bit late, hope not, he is a fine talent and works hard on the field and in training. what more should he do?

Chad is a star who catches the ball over the middle and can go deep. He talks. So what? He plays hard. His team never complains about him just the fans. If he is a problem then Carson can stand up and say so but he never has. We have more guys who play with the heart 85 plays with and we win more games. The comparisons to TO and Moss are ridiculous. Has he ever called out Carson? Has he ever been accused of taking plays off?

When Chad says he can’t be covered then that stud from the Jets- Revis- just blankets him…he embarasses himself and apparently doesn’t even realize it. He can’t separate like he used to. If the Bengals can get something for him I hope they do it. The mouth writes checks neither he nor this woeful passing game can cash. They’re rebuilding the passing corps anyway… go full tilt. Jettison 85 and sign Denver’s Brandon Marshall. Then use 2 draft picks on quality receivers. Palmer probably already said that to the brain trust.

Chad keeps the game fun and is still one of the best receivers in the game. Personally, I’m tired of all the critics, especially when bums like Carson Palmer keep getting a pass.

ya’ll are a bunch of idoits that think we need to dump Chad now. You think our passing game was bad this year, think bout it with him not there. Draft a few high in the draft this year , groom them then release Chad in lets say 3 years. Dont forget he did put up a 1000 yrds and 9 tds in a run 1st, 2nd, and 3rd option offense. It aint palmers fault either, Coles is a joke, henery died. Put Cosby in da slot and draft Dez Bryant or Golden Tate in the first, and then mabye Gilyard in the second or a combo pass and blocking tight end.Problems solved…

Stats Do not Lie.Here are the Stats: Boomer Esiason: Pro bowl: 4x-(86,88,89,93) All Pro: 1X-(88) OchoCinco: Pro Bowl: 6x-(03,04,05,06,07,09) ALL Pro: 2x-(05,06) Chad is not a bad influence, he is one of the BEST Cincinnati football players PERIOD! Like him or not he is DAMNED GOOD! a LOT better talent than Esiason ever seen as quarterback. Esiason was a prima dona quarterback, much like Philip Rivers. Esiason needs to shut his pedestrian rated quarterback mouth!

wow..im glad a washed up has been like boomer likes to put his opinion out there like it counts. the only reason he had the years he did with the bengals was because of his WR and line. he sucked worse then palmer does. get rid of chad and see if you get any sell out crowds, maybe palmer should follow boomers steps and we will be rid of him before long, and he can can give pointless play by play on the games that get no media coverage.

Palmer is fine. He has no receivers. Chad is a terrible route runner and he aint getting any younger. Coles is too new in the Bengals’ system. Caldwell could be a solid possession receiver. The front office is what needs replaced. They rebuilt Palmers line this year and now have to rebuild the receiving corps next year. They have decided to be a running football team now. Why in the hell would you put Carson Palmer on a running football team? What a waste. The Bengals peaked again this year. No playoffs next year. I guarantee it. It does get old watching the village idiot after 20 years with no playoff win. If Chad left today I wouldn’t care. What have we won with him?

Chad, is a great player. All-Pro a couple of years, Pro Bowl for many years. Carson, for the amount of $ he “stealing” from the Brown family is OVER-Rated and we should restruct that deal. We can’t say Brown will not spend the $, he did with Carson and as of right now it hasn’t paid off. In between those line Chad is all about team and giving max effort. Hard to make a catch when your 16 million dollar QB is over throwing, under throwing, and throwing behind you all game. He looked like the rookie in that playoff game. Chad has made the Bengals relevant these past nine years with his antics but most importantly his PLAY! Hate on TO, Randy Moss, and Chad all you want but as long as you can PERFORM at the level they can, their will always be a place for them in the NFL. Men Lie. Women Lie. NUMBERS dont!

I do not think Chad is a bad guy at all. When the franchise made him cut out his antics, he didn’t play nearly as well. It’s just Chad being Chad. He stays out of trouble off the field. He is constantly doing charity work. It made no sense when he wanted to wear Henry’s jersey after he passed, and everyone was like he’s trying to make this about him. No. He was remembering his friend. Why then, was someone from Detroit (I believe) allowed to wear #15, WITH Henry’s name, and didn’t get scrutinized at all??? I guess it’s one of those things that come with having a very strong personality. Lots of haters. Mostly just jealous.

I think Chad is a good receiver… his antics aside. Carson has not been the same since his knee injury. His accuracy is way off & he appears to be suffering from PTSD in the pocket. The O-Line needs tons of improvement. Every good QB in the NFL has a wall of stud O-Lineman in front of him. Brees & Manning get the job done with equal or lesser talent in the WR corps. It’s blocking that breeds confidence & pro-bowl offensive skill position players.

Every time a receiver or RB does a celebration it insults everyone else on the team. They should hand the ball to the ref, shake the hand of every linemen and go to the sideline and sit down. Most of the time it is a great block from the TE or RB that allows the player to score, yet Ocho Stinko acts like he did it all himself. Most Wide outs are lousy blockers anyway, they have no right to celebrate when they have the EASY part compared to blocking. Keep him, trade him, I don’t care, any team that has someone like him is am embarassment to the game.
By Most of the people here are retarted
February 5, 2010 12:35 PM | Link to this
You guys are retarted. Because Chad is still a great player, you dont make it to the pro-bowl for nothin. And none of you even know Chad Johnson personally yet you make comments like “Chads an A*****e” even when he donates a lot of money and genuinely cares about his team mates. Ask one of the bengals if they would release chad and see what they say. I bet that they’ll tell you no and ask if you’re retarted. Plus Chad is the only good reciver we have and drafting a reciever and developing him would take a long time i.e. Jerome Simpson. Free agency will cost too much, if we wanted to get a very good reciaver we would have to give up a first, third/fourth round picks and maybe even a very good player. So you guys need to calm down because judging by what you’re saying I can tell You dont know anything about football so dont talk Please. Chad attracts Attention on and off the field, he put the bengals on the map, we weren’t very respected until him and Carson came here, and you guys want to cut both of them, no wonder Mike Brown doesn’t listen to anyone. So heres what will and should happen, keep carson and Chad, draft a TE in the first round most likely Jermaine Gresham and in the second round draft a reciever, like Mardy Gilyard or Dexter McCluster and a safety later on in the draft. That will most likely put us into the playoffs again due to a very good defense and a better passing game to go along with a very good running game. So stop thinking negatively and focus on the positive “We made it to the playoffs this year for the first time after Carson tore his ACL and this is a huge step into the right direction we can only get better, the bengals will no longer be a surprise team, we’re here to stay!!

why woudl want to cut Chad? Because he’s one of the best in the league? Because the team loves him? Because he has such a great attitude? Because he raised money for Haiti and paid for ten fans to go to the pro-bowl, and the whole trip centered on doing charity work? Because he paid for fans to go to GB and see the game? Oh no, its because he jokingly likes to talk a little trash and he is the ONLY player talking trash. Where did this “NFL player must be all business and can’t have fun” mentality come from anyways?

GREAT IDEA BEN!!!! LETS GET RID OF PALMER!!! LETS DRAFT A NEW QB!!! I got a better idea, lets take Palmer down to the senior bowl and combine and see how he performs. It wouldn’t even be a contest against these people. If Palmer entered the draft today, where do you think he would go? First? of course, these teams that need QBs would give any number of people on their teams for a Palmer. Lets think before we speak.

Hey Most, When you use a name like that you immediately lose any credibility you might have had. I assume you mean “retarded” which even you should know is an offensive term to people who have disabled family members. You might have had something intelligent to write, but you lose many readers just by your user name. I suppose it is a little ironic calling others slow when you don’t know how to spell the word.

To the poster that said that Esiason hates the Bengals and “always picks against them,” as I recall, before the first playoff game in Bengals history under Mike Brown, his almost exact words were: “I like the Bengals, I don’t think that Steelers defense is as good as everyone says it is.” Think he felt good laying it out on the line like that at the expense of a team that would go on to win two Super Bowls in the next four years?
