Bengals sign wide receiver, reports say
UPDATE: BENGALS SIGN BRYANT
It looks like the suspense is over. The Bengals have a reached a deal with wide receiver Antonio Bryant, multiple media outlets are reporting. ESPN is reporting that the deal is for four years and $28 million. Bryant had 122 receptions during the last two seasons with Tampa Bay.
EARLIER: BENGALS SIGN COATS, WHY NOT MARSHALL?
The only Bengals move of the day so far is a befuddling one.
The Bengals have re-signed tight end Dan Coats, who has been with Cincinnati since signing as a college free agent in 2007. Coats (6-3, 264; Brigham Young) is a fourth-year player in 2010. His former contract expired after the 2009 season, and he had become a free agent as of March 5, according to a press release from the team.
The release failed to mention his inability to catch the ball. But, hey, who can’t use another tight end who can’t catch?
The intriguing move should come this week when the Bengals make a decision on which wide receiver to sign.
With aging but interesting Terrell Owens finishing his visit and Antonio Bryant having come and gone, you would think a move is pending.
While either one would be a nice addition, I don’t see why getting Brandon Marshall from Denver isn’t the top priority.
Yes, Marshall would cost a first-round pick. But exactly which wide receiver in the draft do you think is going to have more of an impact than Marshall? He’s 26 and proven to be one of best receivers in the NFL.
So, drop a ton of money on an unproven college wideout in the first round or sign Marshall? It’s a no-brainer.
Locking him into a long-term deal would also start the transition as the Bengals reach 2011 and have to decide what to do with Chad Ochocinco in his option year.

Two words: Mike Brown That is why we will not go after Marshall and we will sign TO. How stupid can one man be. The apple fell far from the tree. We need a WR for the future. You said it all in your colum. I don;t need to add a single word.

Marshall Faulk made a valid point why trading for Marshall won’t work. He’s gonna get $10M per meaning it’s not “his team”. That would p**s Ochocinco off, unless he got a new deal, meaning the bengals would be in the same boat w/just one solid WR

I would like to see Bryant with a long term deal and TO with a 1 or 2 year deal. That would solidify the receiving corps IMO. Re-signing Coats was a waste of money. He has stone hands worse than J.J. Stokes ever did!

mr. Paxson, check into marshall, we can’t sign him….marshall is very close to being thrown out of the league, he will not be considered. they will sign TO and draft a receiver, sadly its their best option with all they have to do.

I think the Bryant deal is a good one. He has top end speed. He still had a better year than Coles last year and he had a bum knee and a no QB and no running game. This moves creates a matchup problem and now they dont have to draft WR in the 1-2nd rounds. Don’t look too much into the Coats signing. They have no TE depth and Coats can play both TE and Full back plus he is a good special teamer. Good Moves today by the Bengals

I still say the right guy for the #2 slot is Kevin Walter, and draft a speed burner.

I hope Coates was signed to play special teams and as a practice TE for the defense to bang on. Maybe if they hit him hard enough they will nock the concrete off his hands. I hope Bryant isn’t an even more expensive Cole!!!
