Bengals sign 6th-round pick Briscoe

Dezmon Briscoe has become the first of Cincinnati’s seven 2010 draft picks to officially sign, according to a press release from the team.

Briscoe is a sixth-round pick out of Kansas (191st overall). In three seasons (2007-09) at Kansas, Briscoe became the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards (3240), TD catches (31) and 100-yard receiving games (14). He ranks second in KU annals for total receptions (219).

With a crowd of talented wide receivers battling for six or seven spots, Briscoe is no lock to make the team.

Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Bryant and Jordan Shipley are locks. Andre Caldwell is also probably in, so that leaves Briscoe, Jerome Simpson, Matt Jones, Freddie Brown, Maurice Purify and Quan Cosby battling for two or three slots.

So, who makes the roster?

I’ve heard from our NFL insider Carlos “Big C” Holmes that Jones was not impressive in mini-camp, so I’m thinking if the Bengals go with two more he gets cut.

I say Briscoe and Simpson make the team, with Jones in if they keep seven wideouts.

What do you think?

Bengals camp: Chad in midseason form, offense clicking

Apparently Hollywood has been good to Chad Ochocinco.

Missing voluntary workouts earlier this year hasn’t hurt the Pro Bowl wide receiver one bit, says NFL insider Carlos “Big C” Holmes, who’s spending every day with the Bengals this week during their 3-day mandatory minicamp.

“Chad’s in midseason form,” Holmes told me during a break in the action.

A few other tidbits from Holmes:

  • Despite the learning curve involved with installing a new offense, Bob Bratkowski’s crew is clicking on all cylinders. “It’s just the way the first unit looks with Carson throwing the ball,” Holmes said. “As a unit they look great.”

  • Running back Bernard Scott has been hobbled by an ankle injury, opening the door for Cedric Peerman. Holmes says Peerman is showing off his slashing and cutting ability.

Good riddance: Former Bengals’ kicker Graham now a Raven

So kicker Shayne Graham has signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens.

Good riddance and good luck hiding from Ray Lewis the first time you cost the Ravens a game, Shayne. Hopefully that will happen when Baltimore comes to town for Cincinnati’s home opener Sept. 19.

I liked Graham right up until he ruined New Year’s Eve in 2006.

graham.jpg
Shayne Graham reacts after missing a 39-yard field goal against Pittsburgh with 12 seconds left on New Year’s Eve 2006.

A win over the Steelers that day and a victory later by San Francisco would have put the Bengals in the playoffs. A large group of friends and I went to the game and had our hotel rooms booked. We had big plans to ring in the New Year and were praying for a Cincinnati win.

Then Graham lined up for a game-winning field goal attempt kicking directly toward our seats in the south end zone. From our perspective, it’s always tough to tell if a kick is good, so as his 39-yarder sailed toward the uprights we held our breath.

It looked good.

Then I looked down, watching the referees wave their arms indicating Graham had missed the kick with 12 seconds left.

The Bengals went on to lose in overtime.

To make matters worse, we all watched as San Francisco won later. One kick had cost Cincinnati a coveted win over Pittsburgh and a berth in the playoffs.

New Year’s Eve was still fun, of course, but instead of chatting about the postseason we were left to lament what might have been.

After that, Graham would miss more clutch kicks - many at home and in my end zone. I also started to notice that he was lucky to reach the 5-yard line on kickoffs. I would make a mental note of every one and it began to drive me up the wall.

So welcome, Mike Nugent.

I know you can kick the ball into the end zone and here’s hoping you have a much better relationship with the uprights at both ends of Paul Brown Stadium.

Bengals sign former Browns’ offensive lineman

The Bengals have signed free agent offensive lineman Isaac Sowells, a fourth-year NFL player, according to a press release from the team.

Sowells (6-3, 320; Indiana) was a fourth-round draft selection by Cleveland in 2006. He spent the ’06 through ’08 seasons with the Browns, playing in 17 games. He was with the Browns in the 2009 preseason, was waived on Sept. 6, and was not with an NFL team during the ’09 regular season.

A project and practice squad player at best, in my opinion.
