<title>Esiason to Bengals: Get rid of Ochocinco</title>

Former Bengal great Boomer Esiason isn&amp;#8217;t buying what Chad Ochocinco is selling.

I happened to briefly tune-in to the Pro Bowl on radio Sunday night just as Esiason was talking about the Bengals and Ochocinco.

Boomer said that he&amp;#8217;s &amp;#8220;not a fan of Ochocinco&amp;#8221; and that Chad is all about Chad &amp;#8212; not the team. He went on to say how he believes Chad&amp;#8217;s antics leading up to games each week &amp;#8212; like trash-talking defensive backs &amp;#8212; get other teams focused because they don&amp;#8217;t want to be shown up.

He said the Bengals should part ways with Ochocinco now, but pointed out that head coach Marvin Lewis probably doesn&amp;#8217;t have the authority to cut or even properly discipline Chad because of heavy handed owner Mike Brown.

Should the Bengals get rid of Chad Johnson?(poll)

Boomer talked about how teams like the Cowboys and Eagles got better after they got rid of a wide receiver with a similar personality, Terrell Owens.

I&amp;#8217;m not sure if I agree with Boomer on this, but I have always valued and respected his opinion. He had a weekly radio show on 700 WLW for years that I listened to religiously.

Boomer always defended the Bengals and came across as someone who truly wants what&amp;#8217;s best for the club and its fans. That makes me wonder how much of an asset or liability the Ocho really is.

<title>Social media connects Ochocinco to dying local fan</title>

Chris Kernich&amp;#8217;s coma and death resulting from a November beating in Kent gripped many area readers.

The former Fairborn High School wide receiver was a well-liked classmate and, it turns out, a huge fan of Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco.

As ESPN.com reporter Amy K. Nelson writes in her recent story about the struggle to connect Kernich and Ochocinco in his final days, it was social media, mainly Twitter, that allowed Ochocinco to eventually make contact with Kernich&amp;#8217;s family.

As Nelson writes:

Technology has allowed social-networking sites to change the dynamic between player and fan. In particular, the emergence of smart phones has brought fans and athletes even closer. But there are no guarantees with this evolving mode of communication, either. Ochocinco, who has more than 700,000 people following him on Twitter, can be besieged with hundreds of messages in a matter of minutes, so there is no guarantee he will see a specific message; it could be wedged in the pile &amp;#8212; just like that piece of snail mail.

During his time in the hospital, Kernich received support from many in the athletic world, as DDN reporter Margo Rutledge Kissell reported the day after his death:

Hearing that Kernich was a huge Buckeye fan, Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel called his hospital room Friday and they put the phone to his ear, according to Kelley Kunkle-Grody, a Fairborn parent who has known Kernich&amp;#8217;s parents, John and Sherry, for 30 years.

Cincinnati Bengals star receiver Chad Ochocinco called Kernich&amp;#8217;s room Saturday night, unaware that Kernich had died, and spoke to his mother, she said.

It was Ochocinco&amp;#8217;s call that likely meant the most to family, as the receiver was by far Kernich&amp;#8217;s favorite player.

And, with the existence of social media, they were able to reach him.

The University of Kentucky announced today that Ray Oliver, Bengals associate strength and conditioning coach, has accepted a position as director of strength and conditioning for the UK football program, according to a press release from the Bengals.

Oliver, a Cincinnati native, has been on the Bengals staff since 2004, working with head strength and conditioning coach Chip Morton. Oliver has maintained strong ties with the UK community since 1988-91, when he was director of strength and conditioning for the UK basketball program.

&amp;#8220;The Bengals gave me a great chance to work for the team I&amp;#8217;ve loved all my life,&amp;#8221; Oliver said in the press release. &amp;#8220;I owe a lot to Mike Brown (Bengals president) and Marvin Lewis (Bengals head coach), and I learned a lot working with Chip Morton. To leave the NFL, it had to be for a place that is special in my heart, and UK is truly special to me and my family. I wish everyone at the Bengals nothing but the very best.&amp;#8221;

Terrell Owens is a free agent and would look good in orange and black.

Sounds crazy, right?

I thought so too &amp;#8230; at first.

A friend of mine suggested this scenario and I laughed it off initially, but the more I think about it, the more I believe he would be a good fit - even if it is just for one year.

In reality, I realize there are a lot of obstacles, like the Bengals being stuck with Laverneous Coles (Ugh!), who signed a 4-year, $27.5 million contract before the 2009 season.

There&amp;#8217;s also the salary Owens may demand, but his numbers were down this year (55 catches, 5 TDs), and he is now 37 years old. He may not get his asking price and might have to take less than the one-year, $6.5 million contract he played for in Buffalo this season.

Regardless, put aside the red tape and suspend reality for a moment.

Can you imagine the antics, celebrations and trash-talk that would ensue?

Some of you will only see how this could negatively affect the team. But, I think you&amp;#8217;d be wrong, just like many of you wrongly believe Chad Ochocinco negatively affects the team.

Owens would bring some needed excitement to town and help ignite the Bengals&amp;#8217; lifeless passing game. He may be closing in on 40, but Owens is still a very skilled player with good hands&amp;#8212; and he&amp;#8217;s a big target at 6-foot-3, 224 pounds. Note that T.J. Houshmandzadeh checks in at 6-2, 203.

He&amp;#8217;s a perfect one-year fill-in while the Bengals draft and develop replacements for Henry and Housh.

Would owner Mike Brown object? Not a chance. We all know how Brown likes to play the role of &amp;#8220;redeemer&amp;#8221; (Larry Johnson, Chris Henry, Cedric Benson). The often-troubled Owens would seem to fit right into that category.

So, get your popcorn ready, Bengals fans!

One of my colleagues, Greg Billing, wrote a story for print Tuesday, Jan. 19, in defense of Carson Palmer that I completely agree with.

A small snippet from his story:

&amp;#8220;&amp;#8230;the blame for the NFL&amp;#8217;s 24th-ranked offense shouldn&amp;#8217;t fall on Palmer&amp;#8217;s shoulders only. The play calling is blah and often predictable. The receivers, outside of Pro Bowler Chad Ochocinco, leave much to be desired. And where is that pass-catching tight end? That would be a nice safety net and another offensive weapon for defenses to game-plan against.&amp;#8221;

Read the rest of Greg&amp;#8217;s take on the Palmer situation.

<title>5 ways to fix the Bengals&apos; offense in 2010</title>

<!--
<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
Here&amp;#8217;s what the Cincinnati Bengals need to do to fix their passing game for 2010.

First on my to-do list would be firing offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, but all indications are that the coaching staff is coming back in-tact. I don&amp;#8217;t think &amp;#8220;Brat&amp;#8221; is a bad coach, but he&amp;#8217;s just been running the offense too long. The plays are predictable and the schemes are stale. There&amp;#8217;s little innovation and he often seems to get out-coached, especially after halftime adjustments are made.

But, since firing him appears to be a pipe-dream, here&amp;#8217;s a look at some realistic moves that I believe would provide this offense with an improved passing game and get the Bengals back to the playoffs.

No. 1: Bye, bye Coles

Sometimes age catches up with athletes in a hurry and that appears to have happened to Laverneous Coles. Even if that&amp;#8217;s not the case, do you want to bet on QB Carson Palmer and Coles developing chemistry in 2010? I don&amp;#8217;t. Trade him. Cut him. Just move on.

No. 2: Release Jerome Simpson

I hate to see this happen, but the kid is a second-round draft pick who was barely able to get on the field even after wide receivers started falling like flies. He&amp;#8217;s officially a bust in my book.

No. 3: Target a proven wide receiver in free agency

I don&amp;#8217;t think the Bengals have to land the best wideout available in free agency, but they do need a proven route-runner who they can mold into a third-down threat. Our in-house draft guru Carlos &amp;#8220;Big C&amp;#8221; Holmes pointed out that former Bengal Kevin Walter will be available. He&amp;#8217;s a reliable third-down receiver with good hands who had 53 catches for over 600 yards in Houston this season. I put him at the top of my list.

No. 4: Pick a burner in the first round

Move up if need be, but grab a wide receiver who can stretch the field like the late Chris Henry. Again, the Bengals don&amp;#8217;t need to get THE superstar of the draft, but they do need to make sure their choice can come in and help right away. Forget about flash and flare. Go for consistency, smarts and speed.

No. 5: Depth at tight end

Those of us on the outside can&amp;#8217;t know for sure what the team thinks of Chase Coffman, who it drafted in the third round and had to expect to contribute in 2009. That didn&amp;#8217;t happen. From what I can gather, part of the reason was Coffman&amp;#8217;s inability to figure out how to do anything other than catch passes from the tight end position. The other part was a nagging injury.

Regardless, the Bengals need to decide what they expect from Coffman in 2010 and draft accordingly. An ESPN mock draft has the Bengals taking TE Jermaine Gresham out of Oklahoma in the first round, so that appears to be a possibility.

There are other outstanding issues &amp;#8212; like re-signing guard Bobbie Williams &amp;#8212; but if the Bengals can address these 5 points in the offseason I think we could see a revived offense in 2010.

The Bengals have signed cornerback Mike Mickens of the University of Cincinnati to the offseason roster, according to a press release from the team.

Mickens (6-1, 190) was on the Cincinnati practice squad for the last five weeks of the 2009 season. He is a Dayton-area native who played at Wayne High School. He was a seventh-round selection by Dallas in the 2009 draft. He did not see regular season action in &amp;#8217;09 and is classified as a first-year NFL player for 2010.

<!--
<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
The good news is Bengal fans will have someone to watch during the NFL Pro Bowl Jan. 31 in Florida.

The bad news is that it&amp;#8217;s wide receiever Chad Ochocino, who is probably the fifth most-deserving player on the team.

Ochocinco replaces injured Wes Welker of New England, who was selected to the team in original voting in December. Ochocinco was a second alternate in the original voting. The first alternate, Randy Moss of New England, also will not participate due to an injury.

This is the the sixth Pro Bowl selection for Ochocinco in his nine NFL seasons, tying him with cornerback Lemar Parrish for the second-most nods in Bengals history. Offensive tackle Anthony Munoz is first with 11.

&amp;#8220;This is extremely great news,&amp;#8221; Ochocinco was quoted as saying in a team press release. &amp;#8220;I appreciate the recognition of the body of work I put in this season. But please let me share with my teammates. Cedric Benson &amp;#8212; none of it would have happened without him. And Carson (Palmer) and my offensive line and everybody. I love you all.&amp;#8221;

Ochocinco led the Bengals by wide margins in receptions (72), receiving yards (1047) and touchdowns (nine).

But, it&amp;#8217;s a good thing Chad mentions his teammates in his quote because Benson and offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, as well as cornerbacks Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph all should have made the team ahead of him.

I understand Ochocinco made the squad because of injuries to other wide receivers, but that doesn&amp;#8217;t make the selection any more legitimate.

<title>Mangold one key to Jets&apos; success</title>

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
One of the key matchups to watch in Saturday&amp;#8217;s Bengals-Jets rematch will be right in the middle of the line. Jets All-Pro center Nick Mangold will be running into Domata Peko.

Why is this significant? Because the Jets piled up 257 rushing yards in Sunday night&amp;#8217;s 37-0 trouncing of the Bengals in New Jersey. Peko, a stout defensive tackle, didn&amp;#8217;t play in the regular-season finale.

He isn&amp;#8217;t the only Bengals defensive starter who returns this week. Defensive end Robert Geathers and safety Chris Crocker also are back. This should make it tougher on the Jets, who carry a lot of confidence into the Queen City.

Jets coach Rex Ryan was asked today if he liked being an underdog in the playoffs. &amp;#8220;I wasn&amp;#8217;t aware of that, but to me we should be favorites.&amp;#8221;

He didn&amp;#8217;t just mean against the Bengals. Ryan went on to say that the Jets have the best rushing attack in the playoffs.

The Jets have won five of their past six and carry a 9-7 record into the postseason.

One reason why New York has one team in the playoffs is Mangold, an Alter High graduate who was interviewed on NBC after Sunday&amp;#8217;s runaway victory.

&amp;#8220;As far as seasons go, most of them are a roller coaster,&amp;#8221; Mangold told the New York Daily News recently. &amp;#8220;This one happened to be more drastic. We&amp;#8217;re in and we&amp;#8217;re out. You got your money&amp;#8217;s worth on this coaster.&amp;#8221;

<title>Bengals will re-write script, rebound Saturday against Jets</title>

When I urged the Bengals to lay down and &amp;#8220;win by losing&amp;#8221; to the Jets prior to Sunday&amp;#8217;s game, I had no idea they would literally lay down and let New York run all over them.

That &amp;#8220;performance&amp;#8221; was very tough to watch, but the more I talk with fellow Bengal fans, read quotes from players and analyze the game, I still feel like it was a good plan.

Maybe a good plan turned ugly, but a good plan nonetheless.

Even though they played to lose and not get hurt, Cincinnati still lost defensive tackle Pat Sims (broken arm) and maybe backup safety Tom Nelson (knee injury).

The good news is that many starters didn&amp;#8217;t play on defense who will be back for the first time in weeks this Saturday.

Emotional leaders Domata Peko on the defensive line and safety Chris Crocker in the secondary are ready. DT Robert Geathers rested, as did running back Cedric Benson and a slew of others who didn&amp;#8217;t sniff many plays in the second half.

I expect a different team entirely this week. The game plan Sunday in New York was as vanilla as they come. No tricks. Nothing special. Perhaps even no adjustments. Even coach Marvin Lewis admitted they probably stuck to the &amp;#8220;script&amp;#8221; way too much.

That script was fine for Sunday night&amp;#8217;s nearly meaningless game. I expect the Bengals to write a completely different chapter Saturday at Paul Brown Stadium.

Any faint hopes rookie linebacker Rey Maualuga had of returning this season were ended Wednesday when the Bengals placed him on injured reserve.

Maualuga, a rookie from Southern California, suffered a left ankle fracture this past Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium against Kansas City. He has started every game this season and ranks tied for fourth on the team in tackles (80) while ranking first in forced fumbles (three), according to a press release from the team.

In other moves:

The Bengals signed rookie TE Darius Hill to the roster. Hill (6-7, 245; Ball State) had been on the Bengals practice squad since Sept. 6. He entered the NFL with Cincinnati last May as a college free agent and played in all four Bengals preseason games (no statistics).

They also signed rookie TE Carson Butler to the practice squad. Butler (6-4, 260; Michigan) was originally signed by Green Bay in May as a college free agent, but was waived and signed Aug. 6 with Detroit. He played in all four Lions preseason games, with four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. He was waived by the Lions on Sept. 5. He spent Week 7 of this season on the San Francisco practice squad.

<title>Bengals get slap in face from Pro Bowl</title>

The Bengals got a slap in the face Tuesday night from NFL fans, players and coaches.

Not a single Bengals player was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster released Tuesday.

According to Bengals.com, it is the first time since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger that a division champion hasn&amp;#8217;t had a Pro Bowler.

There&amp;#8217;s always debate over who makes the Pro Bowl, but the Bengals certainly have worthy candidates in running back Cedric Benson, cornerbacks Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph and even wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

Which Bengal is most deserving of a Pro Bowl spot?(survey)

Ocho was unfazed by the snub and sent a message to his Twitter followers Tuesday evening: &amp;#8220;bengal fans we wouldn&amp;#8217;t be able to play in it anyway! SUPER BOWL BABY!&amp;#8221;

He was, of course, referencing his belief that the Bengals won&amp;#8217;t be able to play in the Pro Bowl because they&amp;#8217;ll be preparing for the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowl will be held the week before the Super Bowl this season instead of a week after.

If the Bengals don&amp;#8217;t end up in the Super Bowl, they could end up with alternates being named to the Pro Bowl when others back out.
