Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Greg Cook, who was born in Dayton, died Thursday night in Cincinnati after an illness, according to a release issued by the team Friday, Jan. 27.

Cook was one of the brightest prospects in Bengals history, but he saw significant playing time only as a rookie in 1969. His career was derailed by a shoulder injury during that season, when he had joined the Bengals as the fifth overall pick in the NFL/AFL draft. Cook was from Chillicothe, Ohio, and was a nationally recognized college star at the University of Cincinnati.

Cook was declared by the American Football League as its 1969 passing champion, based on average league ranking over several categories. Particularly gifted on long passes, he posted a league-leading average of 9.41 yards per attempt, a figure which remains a Bengals record. He was named AFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by Associated Press and United Press International.

But in Game 3 of 1969, on Sept. 28 at Kansas City, Cook suffered a shoulder injury while helping lead the second-year Bengals to a win that brought their profile to a new height in Cincinnati. The Bengals triumphed 24-19 over a Chiefs team that would go on to win Super Bowl IV, and Cincinnati moved to a 3-0 record.

Cook missed the next three games but returned to action later in the &amp;#8217;69 season. He totaled 11 games, passing 106-for-197 for 1854 yards with 15 TDs and 11 interceptions. But his injury later required several surgeries, beginning with the 1970 offseason, and he never was able to return to full action. He remained a member of the Bengals through 1974, but his only action after &amp;#8217;69 was a brief appearance in one game in 1973.

&amp;#8220;Greg was the single most talented player we&amp;#8217;ve ever had with the Bengals,&amp;#8221; said Bengals president Mike Brown. &amp;#8220;His career was tragically short due to the injury. Had he been able to stay healthy, I believe he would have been the player of his era in the NFL.

&amp;#8220;Greg was a personal friend to me,&amp;#8221; Brown added. &amp;#8220;He was a good person whose company I enjoyed over all his years as a player and after that. I feel a great loss at his passing.&amp;#8221;

At the time the Bengals drafted Cook, general manager and head coach Paul Brown said, &amp;#8220;We believe this young man is the best quarterback prospect in the country.&amp;#8221;

Cook was born in Dayton, Ohio, but identified his hometown as Chillicothe, Ohio, where he spent most of his growing-up years. He was a multi-sport star at Chillicothe High School. He left the University of Cincinnati football program with 15 outright school records and a share of two others.

The Bengals&amp;#8217; 2012 training camp will be conducted at the team&amp;#8217;s facility at Paul Brown Stadium, officials announced Friday, Jan. 20.

The club will offer fan access not available in-season at PBS, and sessions will run from late July through mid-August.

The Bengals will end a 15-year run of conducting training camp at Georgetown (Ky.) College, and this will be the first time the team has ever trained at its home facility.

&amp;#8220;Georgetown has been a great place for us, but this is the best way for our team to get ready for the 2012 regular season,&amp;#8221; said head coach Marvin Lewis. &amp;#8220;We going to be right in our home, and that&amp;#8217;s where you&amp;#8217;re best suited with the way the (NFL) rules have changed. We also hope to see some fans who maybe haven&amp;#8217;t had a chance to see us at camp before, and we&amp;#8217;re excited to join all the great activities that are happening in the summertime in our downtown.&amp;#8221;

The Bengals will work to create open environments at PBS, incorporating the training camp tradition of greater access for fans to interact with players. Special events and attractions not available away from PBS are also in the works. The camp&amp;#8217;s practice schedule will be released at a later date, well in advance of opening day.

&amp;#8220;Some very positive opportunities both for fans and the local economy will now be available, and we are excited to bring the benefits to Greater Cincinnati,&amp;#8221; said Katie Blackburn, Bengals vice-president. &amp;#8220;We think fans will like what we have to offer.&amp;#8221;

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory added, &amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s great to have the Bengals&amp;#8217; training camp as a major addition to the downtown summer scene. With all of the excitement from last year&amp;#8217;s playoff finish, the timing couldn&amp;#8217;t be better.&amp;#8221;

Greg Hartman, Hamilton County Commission president, said, &amp;#8220;Everything is coming together at The Banks, and the addition of Bengals training camp will provide just one more reason for people to come downtown. This is another example of converting the promises of The Banks into a reality.&amp;#8221;

The decision to train in Cincinnati was influenced by the NFL&amp;#8217;s new Collective Bargaining Agreement agreed to last summer, which significantly reduces the number of on-field practice sessions allowed during the training camp period. By staying at PBS, Bengals coaches will now have the advantage of the team&amp;#8217;s home facilities, weight and training facilities, and technology for working with players between practices, assets in which the Club has invested more than $1 million in recent years.

&amp;#8220;The new rules bring an aspect that the Bengals and Georgetown College must adjust to,&amp;#8221; said Bengals president Mike Brown. &amp;#8220;But people who know me know that I will personally miss going away to camp very much. Georgetown is a special place for the Bengals and will remain so. I thank Bill Crouch (Georgetown College president) for working with us to make the arrangement happen. The people we have worked with over the years have been unfailingly helpful and knowledgeable. They have become our dear friends and will remain so.&amp;#8221;

For the Bengals&amp;#8217; first 29 seasons (1968-96), the team conducted training camp at Wilmington (Ohio) College.

<title>Dalton, Crocker honored by pro football writers</title>

This was just announced by the Cincinnati Bengals:

The Cincinnati Chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America today named QB Andy Dalton as the Bengals&amp;#8217; 2011 Most Valuable Player FS Chris Crocker as recipient of the organization&amp;#8217;s annual &amp;#8220;Good Guy&amp;#8221; award.

The voters are the beat writers who cover the team on a daily basis.
Dalton is the first rookie MVP in the 10 seasons the organization has handed out the award. He is the third quarterback to do so, joining Jon Kitna (2002-03) and Carson Palmer (2005).

Besides Palmer and Kitna, other past MVP winners were HB Rudi Johnson (2004), OT Willie Anderson (2006), WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (2007-08), CBs Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph (2009) and OT Andrew Whitworth (2010).

Dalton was the Bengals first rookie starting quarterback in an opener since Greg Cook in 1969 and has broken all of Cook&amp;#8217;s records this year. Dalton is also the first quarterback since the merger to pass for 20 touchdowns and lead his team to at least eight wins.

&amp;#8220;In a year where there was no offseason coaching due to the lockout and in which he had to replace one of the pillars of the franchise, Dalton&amp;#8217;s development and poise under pressure has been extraordinary,&amp;#8221; said PFWA spokesman Joe Reedy, Bengals beat writer for The Cincinnati Enquirer.

&amp;#8220;Since the early part of the season, players have remarked how Dalton has the poise of a four- or five-year veteran in the huddle. In a season like this, it is hard to separate Dalton and A.J. Green, since you can&amp;#8217;t mention one without the other, but in the end Dalton&amp;#8217;s leadership and ability to lead a new offense won out.&amp;#8221;

Crocker is the 10th recipient of the organization&amp;#8217;s &amp;#8220;Good Guy&amp;#8221; award, given for excellent relations with local media.

&amp;#8220;Chris has always been one of the go-to guys in the locker room and has set an example as a team leader to help us bring our readers the information that they so strongly desire,&amp;#8221; Reedy said. &amp;#8220;His candor and perspective during the week and following games has been much appreciated. As a nine-year veteran, &amp;#8216;Crock&amp;#8217; has also been an invaluable resource on league matters during the season and when the lockout was taking place.&amp;#8221;

The chapter also expressed its appreciation to OT Andrew Whitworth and NT Domata Peko for their help during the lockout.

&amp;#8220;During a time when not many players were talking and very few allowed access to their workouts, both players understood how important it was to allow readers to see how they were trying to prepare for the season when it started,&amp;#8221; Reedy said.

Past &amp;#8220;Good Guy&amp;#8221; winners have been FB Lorenzo Neal, OT Willie Anderson, HB Brandon Bennett, LB Brian Simmons, DT John Thornton, WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, DT Bryan Robinson, G Bobbie Williams, QB Carson Palmer and HB Cedric Benson.

Anderson, Houshmandzadeh and Palmer are the only players to win both the MVP and the Good Guy awards.

Sunday&amp;#8217;s Cincinnati Bengals&amp;#8217; home game against the Baltimore Ravens is a sellout, the Bengals ticket office announced today.

The game at 4:15 p.m. will be televised in the Bengals home market on CBS affiliates WKRC-TV (Channel 12) in Cincinnati, WHIO-TV (7) in Dayton and WKYT-TV (27) in Lexington, Ky.

&amp;#8220;Our fans have made a tremendous response this week to our sales efforts, and we thank the entire community for its support of the Bengals,&amp;#8221; said Katie Blackburn, the team&amp;#8217;s executive vice-president. &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re pleased that the game will be on television for everyone, and we look forward to the fans at Paul Brown Stadium giving us a great home field advantage for a very important game against Baltimore.&amp;#8221;

The Baltimore game is a marquee NFL contest this weekend, moved to 4:15 p.m. from an original kickoff time of 1 p.m. to reach a wider television audience.

The Bengals can clinch a playoff spot with a victory, and Baltimore is out to claim a division championship and first-round playoff bye.

Bengals rookie WR A.J. Green has been voted to the AFC team for this season&amp;#8217;s Pro Bowl game, the NFL announced Tuesday. The game will be played on Sunday, Jan. 29, televised nationally on NBC beginning at 7 p.m.

Green, from the University of Georgia, was the Bengals&amp;#8217; first-round selection (fourth overall) in the 2011 draft. He is the first rookie WR voted to the Pro Bowl since the 2003 season, when Anquan Boldin of the Arizona Cardinals made the list, and he is the first Bengals rookie at any position voted to the Pro Bowl since WR Cris Collinsworth in the 1981 season.

The Bengals also had seven players voted as Pro Bowl alternates. DT Geno Atkins, QB Andy Dalton and K Mike Nugent were voted first alternates, OT Andrew Whitworth is a second alternate, TE Jermaine Gresham is a third alternate, and HB Cedric Benson and NT Domata Peko are fifth alternates.

The alternates are selected for the Pro Bowl when roster replacements are needed due to injuries or other reasons. This year&amp;#8217;s Pro Bowl will be played a week in advance of Super Bowl XLVI, so Pro Bowl selections on the two Super Bowl teams will be replaced from the alternates&amp;#8217; ranks.

Green has played in 14 of the Bengals&amp;#8217; 15 games, missing one due to injury, and he leads the team in receptions (63), receiving yards (1031) and touchdowns (seven). He ranks tied for 12th in the AFC in receptions, and he ranks seventh in receiving yards, but his performance has transcended those numbers. As he did in college, he has made spectacular plays on a regular basis, using his size (6-4, 207), speed and superior hands to frequently beat double coverage for contested catches. He leads the NFL this season in catches of 35 or more yards (11).

&amp;#8220;As I&amp;#8217;ve said before, A.J. is the best first-round draft pick that I&amp;#8217;ve ever been around,&amp;#8221; said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. &amp;#8220;He has shown the other players in this league, and the fans, that he deserved this honor. I have not seen a receiver better than he is at getting to the ball.&amp;#8221;

Pro Bowl spots are determined based on voting by players, coaches and fans, with each group&amp;#8217;s vote having equal weight.

Besides Cris Collinsworth in the 1981 season, other Bengals rookies in the Pro Bowl have been WR Isaac Curtis (1973) and CB Lemar Parrish (1970). Additionally, four Bengals rookies were in the American Football League All-Star Game &amp;#8212; LB Bill Bergey (1969) and C Bob Johnson, RB Paul Robinson and TE Bob Trumpy in 1968.

A sports hernia has ended the season for wide receiver Andre Caldwell, who played in 13 games for the Bengals this season before missing the last two.

Caldwell has been placed on the Reserve/Injured list, opening the door for former University of Cincinnati star wideout Armon Binns, who was promoted to the roster from the practice squad.

Binns (6-3, 210) is in his rookie NFL season. He was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 20. He entered the NFL on July 28 with Jacksonville as a college free agent. He played in three Jaguars preseason games, with three receptions for 20 yards and one touchdown, and was waived on Sept. 3. A native of Pasadena, Calif., he was a four-year letterman (2007-10) at UC, with 75 receptions for 1101 yards and 10 TDs in 2010.

Caldwell, a fourth-year NFL player, ends the season with 37 receptions for 317 yards and three touchdowns.

Another former UC player, wide receiver Vidal Hazelton, replaced Binns on the practice squad. Hazelton (6-2, 218) is also in his rookie NFL season. He entered the NFL on July 27 with San Diego as a college free agent. He played in two Chargers preseason games (no statistics) and was waived on Aug. 31.

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., he began his college career at Southern California from 2006-08. He transferred to the University of Cincinnati and began play in 2010, but he suffered a knee injury in the season opener and was out for the remainder of the season.

Jim Lippincott, Bengals Director of Football Operations, announced today his impending retirement. Lippincott, who first joined the Bengals in 1992 in scouting and personnel, will remain active in football by returning to Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s Moeller High School as defensive coordinator, resuming his longtime association with the school.

Lippincott will serve in a dual role for the first few months of 2012, returning to Moeller but also continuing to work with the Bengals, helping the team prepare for April&amp;#8217;s college draft.

&amp;#8220;Jim has been a valued member of our front office for some 20 years, working as both a scout and as an administrator,&amp;#8221; said Bengals president Mike Brown. &amp;#8220;His work at Moeller is where his heart takes him now, but I thank him for all he has done here over the years and wish him only the very best. Jim will still be very much in the Bengals picture as we head toward this year&amp;#8217;s draft.&amp;#8221;

Lippincott, a native of Lima, Ohio, holds degrees from Xavier University and the University of Dayton. He first came to Moeller High School in 1981 as defensive coordinator. He added the role of athletic director in 1988. He worked as both an administrator and a coach until he left in 1992 to join the Bengals.

&amp;#8220;First and foremost, I want to express my love for Mike Brown, and to thank him for giving me the opportunity to work for the Bengals,&amp;#8221; Lippincott said. &amp;#8220;The experience has been challenging and rewarding. I will leave remembering not just the results of the games, but for the priceless professional associations and friendships I&amp;#8217;ve been blessed to make.&amp;#8221;

The Bengals will be without one of their veteran leaders for the final three games of the season.

Cincinnati placed offensive guard Bobbie Williams on the injured list Monday, ending his season and his streak of never having missed a game to a football-related injury. Williams suffered a right ankle fracture during Sunday&amp;#8217;s loss to Houston. The 12th-year NFL player has been Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s starting right guard since joining the Bengals in 2004 as an unrestricted free agent.

In a related move, the Bengals added Otis Hudson to the roster from the practice squad. Hudson (6-5, 311; Eastern Illinois) is a first-year NFL player. He was on the roster for games 1-4 this year, but was inactive each week, due in part to a knee injury suffered in preseason. He was waived Oct. 6 and had been on the practice squad since Oct. 7. A fifth-round Bengals draft choice in 2010, he spent his rookie season on the practice squad.

One of Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s best run-stoppers will no longer be in the defensive line rotation for the Bengals.

Fourth-year defensive tackle Pat Sims injured his ankle against Cleveland on Nov. 27 and was put on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his season. Sims played in this season&amp;#8217;s first 11 games, logging 28 tackles with a sack.

Cincinnati added depth by signing free agent DT Nick Hayden to the roster. Hayden (6-4, 292; Wisconsin) is classified a third-year NFL player. He was a sixth-round selection by Carolina in the 2008 draft. He spent most of his rookie year on the practice squad, played in 10 games with two stars in 2009 and played in 14 games with 10 starts last season. He opened 2011 training camp with Carolina and was waived on Sept. 3. His NFL totals include 26 games, 13 starts, 85 tackles and 2.0 sacks.

The Bengals also signed DT Swanson Miller to the practice squad. Miller (6-4, 310; Oklahoma State) is classified a first-year NFL player. He entered the league in April of 2010 as a college free agent with Cleveland and was waived at the conclusion of preseason. He was signed to the New Orleans practice squad in December of 2010, was signed the New Orleans offseason roster for 2011 and opened &amp;#8217;11 training camp with the Saints. He was waived on Sept. 4. He has spent time this regular season on both the New Orleans and Tampa Bay practice squads.

Cincinnati released rookie DT Cornell Banks of Fresno State from the practice squad. Banks had been signed to the practice squad on Nov. 29.

Bengals WR Brandon Tate today was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week by the NFL.

Tate returned three punts for 73 yards (24.3-yard average) in the Bengals&amp;#8217; 34-12 win at Seattle on Sunday, including a 56-yarder for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, putting the Bengals up by the pivotal two-score margin, 27-12. It was the team&amp;#8217;s first punt return for a TD since 2003 (11-16-03 vs. Kansas City, Peter Warrick, 68 yards). Tate, who totaled 186 return yards in the game, also returned four kickoffs for 113 yards (28.3), including a 45-yarder.

Tate, a third-year pro acquired Sept. 4 on waivers from New England, is averaging 12.3 yards on 24 punt returns for the season, which ranks fifth in the NFL, and he has a 25.1-yard average on 18 kickoff returns. In the last three games, Tate has averaged 18.9 yards on eight punt returns.

The last Bengal to win a Player of the Week award was K Mike Nugent, who won the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award in Week 2 last season.

The Bengals also made the following roster moves Wednesday:

*Added HB Cedric Benson to active status. Benson started Games 1-6 this season and is the team&amp;#8217;s rushing leader, with 458 yards. He missed Game 7, last week at Seattle, due to an NFL suspension. He was with the team, on a roster exemption, on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

Waived CB Morgan Trent, a third-year player from Michigan. Trent played in Games 1-6 for the Bengals and was inactive last week.

<title>Dalton will make Bengals fans forget Palmer</title>

It was Carson Palmer&amp;#8217;s ninth pass as an Oakland Raider, not his first as I had hoped, that got intercepted and run back for a touchdown.

He apparently knew just a few plays and pass protections when he entered the game in the second half, but he was miserable in his debut. He was 8 for 21 passing with three interceptions during a 28-0 loss to the Chiefs. Luckily for Palmer and the Raiders, Oakland has a bye this week before getting to play another inept team in Denver.

We&amp;#8217;ll see how it goes from here, but Palmer really has nowhere to go but up &amp;#8230; good luck, Raider Nation.

Meanwhile, our own NFL guru, Carlos &amp;#8220;Big C&amp;#8221; Holmes, and others are touting the poise, play, leadership and accuracy of Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s rookie QB Andy Dalton.

Here are some comments I&amp;#8217;ve found recently:

&amp;#8220;Bengals AJ Green and Andy Dalton, along with Carolina&amp;#8217;s Cam Newton, are names brought up in discussion of the NFL rookie of the year.&amp;#8221; &amp;#8212; Cincinnati.com.

&amp;#8220;While (Cam) Newton&amp;#8217;s passing yardage is better than Dalton&amp;#8217;s (1,847 to 1,311), the Bengals&amp;#8217; quarterback has a better completion percentage (62.4 to 58.5), the same number of touchdowns (7), fewer interceptions (5 to 9) and a higher quarterback rating (84.3 to 78.3).&amp;#8221; &amp;#8212; Stephen Doyle of SI.com.

&amp;#8220;But Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s Andy Dalton, taken 34 picks after Newton in last April&amp;#8217;s draft, is also putting himself on the fantasy radar faster than almost anyone &amp;#8230;&amp;#8221; &amp;#8212; Arizona Daily Star.

&amp;#8220;He is so far ahead of me when I was at that age it is not funny. The fourth quarter of that Buffalo game told me how mentally he is so far ahead.&amp;#8221; &amp;#8212; Boomer Esiason.

It&amp;#8217;s hard to disagree with any of these assessments or compliments. The jury is already in and Dalton is only going to get better. If he stays healthy, Dalton will make every Bengals fan forget about the unfulfilled promises of Palmer.

Is Carson Palmer a quitter who Bengals fans should root against in his new life as quarterback of the Oakland Raiders?

Or is Palmer simply another in a long line of players who were beaten down by the incompetency of owner Mike Brown and the perpetual losing atmosphere that surrounded the team?

Or do you have a different perspective on the whole situation?

I was told to just &amp;#8220;let it go&amp;#8221; by another Bengals fan recently while discussing Palmer, but I find that hard to do. Not only do I think Palmer quit on the team - and made tens of millions in the process - I believe he quit mentally long before he went to Brown and asked for a trade after the 2010 season.

Anyone who watched him play in 2010, and even part of 2009, had to feel like Palmer wasn&amp;#8217;t giving it his all. Maybe he was subconsciously slacking off or feeling hopeless about the prospects of ever winning again in Cincinnati. Regardless, he had a job to do and I don&amp;#8217;t think he was doing it to the best of his ability for the last couple of seasons.

If he comes out Sunday and plays well after less than a week as a Raider, I will consider my suspicions confirmed. I fully expect Palmer to have two or three good - if not great - seasons for Oakland.

I hope that Carson &amp;#8220;Pick 6&amp;#8221; Palmer&amp;#8217;s first pass is intercepted and run back for a touchdown, but I fully expect him to play well and leave us all wondering if he ever really committed to the team and the city.

<title>Is Bengals owner Mike Brown a genius?</title>

We all know Bengals owner Mike Brown is no football genius, but waiting to trade Carson Palmer certainly makes him look like one now.

Let&amp;#8217;s be honest. There isn&amp;#8217;t anybody out there who thought Cincinnati could get TWO first-round draft picks for Palmer. Earlier this season, the Bengals would have been lucky to get a late-round pick and a bag of balls for Palmer.

It&amp;#8217;s not like Palmer was tearing it up before he decided to retire rather then return to the team and honor his contract. Many fans and members of the media were trying to run him out of town along with the TOcho Show.

But, for once, Mikey gets lucky.

He sat back with no intention of ever trading Palmer and had the Raiders fall into his lap after their starting QB Jason Campbell was injured and declared out for the season on Sunday, just two days before the NFL trading deadline (today, 4 p.m.).

Oakland, desperate to land a legit starting QB, gave Brown an offer even he couldn&amp;#8217;t refuse. Now, the overachieving Bengals, already one of the youngest teams in the NFL, are sitting pretty with two extra first-round draft picks, one in 2012 and another in 2013.

This season has already been a pleasant surprise and this team is giving the impression that it&amp;#8217;s too young to realize how bad things have been under Brown&amp;#8217;s incompetent reign.

So, could the negative atmosphere and stigma of losing finally be drifting past Paul Brown Stadium? It&amp;#8217;s hard to fathom with Brown and family still in charge, but a move like this is shocking to the point of disbelief.

It almost makes me believe things really are changing or maybe Brown is just getting senile (likely) or finally coming to his senses (doubtful).

Regardless, this move is so out of character that is should give fans a ray of hope.

Maybe there really is light at the end of the Whodey tunnel, even if Mikey and family are still in charge.

The Cincinnati Bengals have traded disgruntled quarterback Carson Palmer to the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders traded a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional second-rounder in 2013 that can become another first if Oakland makes it to the AFC title game in either of the next two years, according to the Associated Press.

Palmer asked for a trade following the 2010 season, but was under contract and the request was denied by Cincinnati owner Mike Brown. Palmer decided to retire rather than return to the Bengals, who drafted his replacement in TCU&amp;#8217;s Andy Dalton.

Brown has repeatedly said he would not trade Palmer.

The Raiders find themselves in desperate need of a new starting quarterback after Jason Campbell was injured and declared likely out for the season Sunday.
