Right tackle Andre Smith, who signed a three-year, $18 million contract last month, was not present for the first OTA session Tuesday.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said the absence was not conditioning related.

“He’s got to deal with some stuff that he has to take care of and when he gets it taken care of he will be back up here,” Lewis said without elaborating further.

Fellow offensive linemen Andrew Whitworth, Clint Boling, Trevor Robinson, Dennis Roland and Travelle Wharton did not participate in team activities Tuesday but were seen getting in work on the rehab field, along with running back Bernard Scott, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, defensive end Jamaal Anderson, defensive back Robert Sands.

Cornerback Leon Hall did not participate in 11-on-11 drills because of what Bengals.com reported was a torn thumb ligament suffered while lifting. And cornerback Adam Jones left the field midway through practice, shortly after getting beat by wide receiver Marvin Jones on a deep pass from Andy Dalton.

Second-year safety George Iloka accidently knocked tight end Tyler Eifert, the Bengals’ first-round pick last month, on the ground when trying to jump a crossing route for an interception.

“It was a little bit of a surprise, but I guess that’s just the way it goes,” Eifert said.

Despite starting all 16 games last year as a rookie and being ranked as one of the top guards in the NFL by profootballfocus.com, Kevin Zeitler said it wasn’t until a few weeks ago when he realized he had truly arrived.

“I guess I’ve made it to the big time because are pretending to be me on the Internet,” Zeitler said. “There’s a fake online dating profile of me out there. Someone on Twitter mentioned it, and my fiancée (Sara) went and found it and was like ‘What the heck?’ “

Zeitler, who will marry Sara on July 6 in Wisconsin, contacted Bengals security head Rusty Guy, who got the profile taken down.

“It’s funny, but at the same time I don’t want that being around,” Zeitler said.

You obviously already have a presence in the locker room with all the skins on the wall that you have. What’s your philosophy on mentoring young players in the league?

“A guy can ask me anything. I’ll tell him the truth. It may not be what he wants to hear, but it’s an approach of being a professional. Your job is to play football. There’s a lot of people out there that want to do what we do but just don’t have the physical talents to do it. You’ve been blessed with that physical talent. If you want to be able to stay in this business for a while, you’re going to have to take care of your body. You want to do that, you’re going to have to spend money. It’s not cheap. You want to stay here awhile, you’ve got to learn. Maybe for the first four or five years you’re getting a little faster, and after that you start slowing down. You’ve got to make it up with knowledge of the game.”

With all those skins on the wall, everybody in the organization that met you says “Man, this guy’s humble.” Where did that humbleness come from?

“I would say that comes from my mom and dad. I’m the youngest of 14. My dad, he took care of all of us. He worked his butt off, day in and day out.”

Did you ever fight to eat, being the youngest of 14?

“No, see I got lucky. I’m like eight years removed from the next sibling. There wasn’t anybody eating anymore baby food when I came around (laughs).”

You said you spend $400,000-$600,000 a year on your body. Can you say on what?

“As far as training, I have a hyperbaric chamber. I rent a hyperbaric chamber when I’m in Arizona. I have massages and I bring people in from New York, Arizona to where I’m at. There’s that cost. Like I said, I get body work almost every single day except Saturday and Sunday. I have a homeopathic doctor and I do a lot of homeopathic things. It’s just a lot, supplements, so on and so forth.”

How much different is that now than say, 10 to 12 years ago when you were younger?

“I didn’t know what a massage was. I take it back. I was getting a lot of massages. I was going to the chiropractor, too. You know, it’s everything. I started off with just one massage person and my chiropractor. Getting massages from different people, probably tried out maybe 150 different massage people. Right now I’m down to, maybe, I believe it’s five…actually I believe six. I have six people that I directly see.”

Now will they travel here?

“Yeah. They’ll stay with me. “

You’ve got a masseuse, an acupuncturist and what else?

“I’ve got a masseuse, got an acupuncturist, got a trainer, got another masseuse and another masseuse and a homeopathic doctor. I think that’s it.”

Did you know anything about Vontaze Burfict before you came here?

“No I didn’t. I can’t say that I did.”

You made no secret that you wanted to stay with the Steelers. You also made no secret you’ll use whatever you need to motivate you. How much of a motivation is it that you’re not necessarily where you wanted to be when you signed?

“I understand it’s a business, so it’s not like I can really take it personally. But to say that it doesn’t motivate me in some sense would be a lie.”

How big has (Steelers Defensive Coordinator) Dick LeBeau been in your career?

“I credit Dick LeBeau with everything that I do. Without him, I’m not up here. He has great knowledge of the game, and the understanding of how to draw up the way defenses are built to make his linebackers successful.”

Do you play mean?

“Like mad? No.”

How would you describe your mental state on the field?

“It’s focus. It’s intense. It’s violent. Because it’s a violent game. You can’t go out there with a smile on your face. I’m not out there mad at the world, making up scenarios in my head just so I could go out there and play a little harder. It’s focus and intense 100 miles an hour.”

What was it like coming in here to this locker room, with the stripes and the orange and black?

“It’s a change. That’s definite. But, everything has a reason, and everything happens for a reason. So it’s the reason that I’m here. I’m happy to be here, and I’m ready to learn and see what I can do to help the team win.”

The man that wrote your book, Bill Parise, said of you “his relentless pursuit of a career in the NFL sums up who he is.” Are OK with that description?

“I’m a professional athlete. That’s what I do, but that’s not who I am. Myabe he’s talking about the approach to how I approach everything in life. I’m trying to go out there and, whatever it is, and succeed. Whether that’s in business, with my real estate ventures, or whether it’s in football, with playing.”

Has anything ever been given to you?

“Nothing has ever been given to me. My mama told me, ‘Nobody is ever going to give you anything; if you want something, you’re going to have to go get it.’”

Parise also said that you’re not that big, and you’re not that fast, but that you often say that if you have to run more than 40 yards, you’re not doing something right. It seems like you see yourself as more of a typical football player…

“That statement is about football in general, especially because it’s a team sport. If I’m out there with 10 other guys, and they’re running the ball, and I need to run more than 40 or 50 yards, then it’s an issue and everybody’s not doing their job. They’ve got to run through you before they get past you.”

What is your definition of AFC North football?

“I don’t know, now. They’re starting to throw the ball (laughs). It used to be smash-mouth (laughs). I don’t know what it is now; it’s a combination of the two. But it’s a rivalry of four teams that genuinely don’t like each other, but have a mutual respect.”

What was your view of Andy Dalton as a quarterback?

“I don’t have a view. Next question.”

How long has it been since you felt this good physically?

“I probably haven’t felt this good since, I don’t know, 2008, the beginning of 2009.”

What has feeling good physically for the first time in that long allowed you to do this offseason that you maybe haven’t been able to do in recent offseasons?

“I’m still not able to do certain things, but as far as my physical health, I’m able to train a lot harder than I have been over the last two, three offseasons. I’m able to do a lot of more weight. I’m able to just do a lot more things that my body physically couldn’t do because of injury, or whatever it may be.”

Parise said that he’s never seen anyone put as much focus, time and money into their body as you. How important is your body?

“My body is what helps me to make money. Whatever there is that I need to do to try and make myself better or get myself healthy, I’m going to do it. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say that I spend anywhere between 400-to-600 thousand dollars on body work, as far as taking care of my body, year-in and year-out.”

As far as time during the day, how much do you put into your body?

“Getting stretched — maybe an hour or so. Ice tub, hot tub, cold tub — maybe another extra 30 or 40 minutes. Massage — maybe another two-to-four hours per day.”

Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Tyler Eifert and second-round selection Giovani Bernard are among 40 rookies from the 2013 NFL Draft class who will make their professional debut in Los Angeles Wednesday through Sunday at the 19th annual NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Rookie Premiere.

Throughout the four-day event, hosted by NFL Players, Inc., the marketing and licensing subsidiary of the NFLPA, rookies will participate in business of football seminars and connect with NFL sponsors, partners, and licensees through daily activities. Marketing partners and licensees activating at NFLPA Rookie Premiere include Topps, Panini, Pepsi NEXT, Nike, EA SPORTS, Fandeavor, FedEx, SB Nation, TheraPearl and élevée.

“Rookie Premiere is one of the most valuable opportunities for partners because it’s the first time they’ll be able to access so many promising and potentially marketable young stars in one place following the draft,” Keith Gordon, President of NFL Players, Inc., said in a press release. “This is where those same partners, who have invested millions into licensed products and NFL sponsorships can evaluate the players and determine who can best represent their brands, reach consumers and help deliver upon their investment.”

Ticket Packs for the 2013 Bengals home season will go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.

Both two-game and four-game packs will be available beginning at $40 per ticket per game. In 2012, all available $40 seats were sold out through full season tickets. But for 2013, the number of available $40 seats has been increased.

Ticket Packs offer preferred seating options over single-game tickets, including the same seats for all games within a pack. Both the four-game and two-game packs will be available on all three levels of the stadium. Also, pack buyers gain priority behind full-season ticket holders for 2013 season playoff seats.

Four-game packs will include:

ORANGE PACK: Green Bay, N.Y. Jets, Indianapolis, Minnesota.
BLACK PACK: Pittsburgh, New England, Cleveland, Baltimore.

Two-game packs will include:

PACK A: Pittsburgh, Cleveland.
PACK B: New England, Baltimore.
PACK C: Green Bay, N.Y. Jets.
PACK D: Indianapolis, Minnesota.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Ticket Packs may be purchased by calling the Bengals Ticket Hotline at 866-621-TDTD (8383), or online at Bengals.com. Packs will also be available in person at the PBS ticket office during normal business hours of Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., beginning Monday.

Also Saturday, single-game tickets for the Bengals’ two home preseason games — Aug. 17 vs. Tennessee and Aug. 29 vs. Indianapolis — will go on sale.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed two more draft picks and another college free agent Monday.

Fourth-rounder Sean Porter, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker from Texas A&M, and sixth-round selection Rex Burkhead, a 5-10, 214-pound running back from Nebraska, signed their rookie deals, bringing the number of draft picks under contract to five.

“I’m just glad to be in Cincy finally,” Burkhead said last weekend while competing in the team’s rookie mini camp at Paul Brown Stadium.

“It’s been a long process,” he continued. “I’m finally getting on the field and starting to compete and practice and learn the playbook. There are lots of things to improve upon. I feel there’s a bunch of things I can get better at. But that’s why we get these practices.”

Burkhead was limited by injury to only eight games last year as a senior, but he averaged 6.9 yards per rush and he closed his career ranked fifth on Nebraska’s all-time rushing list with 3329 yards.

Porter started 39 games over his final three seasons and finished his Aggies career with 261 tackles, 14.5 sacks and 34.5 tackles-for-loss.

They join sixth-round wide receiver Cobi Hamilton (6-2, 212, Arkansas) and seventh-rounders Reid Fragel (offensive tackle, 6-8, 308, Ohio State) and T.J. Johnson (center, 6-4, 310, South Carolina) as draft picks in the fold.

The Bengals also elevated Terrence Stephens from tryout stats to college free agent after the 6-1, 307-pound defensive tackle from Stanford impressed coaches at last weekend’s rookie mini camp.

Rookie defensive tackle Travis Chappelear of Northwest Missouri State was waived after joining the team as a CFA on April 30.

The new CBA that ended the lockout in 2011 makes it easier for teams to sign their draft picks due to uniform base salaries and standard four-year contract lengths, and Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he expects the five picks who remain unsigned to be under contract soon.

They are tight end Tyler Eifert, (first round, Notre Dame), running back Giovani Bernard (second round, North Carolina), defensive end Margus Hunt (second round, SMU), safety Shawn Williams (third round, Georgia) and offensive tackle Tanner Hawkinson (fifth round, Kansas).

Sixth-round pick Cobi Hamilton signed a four-year contract Saturday, becoming the team’s third draft choice to come to terms. The Bengals officially announced the signings of seventh-rounders Reid Fragel and T.J. Johnson on Friday.

A wide receiver, Hamilton set Arkansas single-season records for catches (90) and receiving yards (1,335) in 2012. He also owns the mark for receptions in a career (175).

Instead of brunch with their moms this morning, the newest Cincinnati Bengals will be on the field at Paul Brown Stadium wrapping up rookie minicamp.

But at least one rookie, first-round pick Tyler Eifert, already gave his mom, Julie, her Mother’s Day gift. And there’s a chance you may have seen him do it on television.

Eifert was one of six NFL rookies who filmed commercials for Pandora Jewelry the night before the NFL Draft in April.

Barkevious Mingo, Geno Smith, Sheldon Richardson, Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel and Eifert invited their moms to what the women thought was going to be an interview. Instead they pulled out personalized Pandora bracelets and thanked their moms for helping get them to the NFL while the cameras rolled.

The videos were cut into commercials that have been airing the last few weeks.

“My agent called and asked if I wanted to do a commercial with a Mother’s Day theme with my mom, and I said yes,” Eifert said. “It was mostly guys who were there for the draft, but we flew out there just for that.

“It was supposed to be a surprise to get her reaction, so there could really only be one take,” he added. “She was pretty surprised.”

The Cincinnati Bengals officially announced the signing of two draft picks Friday on the opening day of rookie mini camp.

Seventh-rounders Reid Fragel, an offensive tackle from Ohio State, and T.J. Johnson, a center from South Carolina, each signed four-year deals worth a reported $2.2 million over the course of the contract.

“I was kind of surprised when I came in (Thursday) and they said they had it ready for me,” Fragel said. “It wasn’t something I was pressing, but away we went. It was nice to get that out of the way.”

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he expects the team to reach agreements with the other draft picks soon.

“I think we’ll push hard to get them all signed here very quickly,” he said. “That way we can kind of turn our attention to some other things.”

Marvin Lewis News Conference

Paul Brown Stadium

May 10, 2013

Opening Comments…

“It’s been a good day, other than a little bit of rain shower. It was really good to get started today with our young players. To a man, they impressed me; I wasn’t disappointed with where anybody was, in relationship to what we expected through the draft. It was a really good start. It’s obviously evident that both Tyler (Eifert) and Giovani (Bernard) will be able to help us offensively and have an opportunity to carve out roles and niches early on in their rookie seasons. I’m excited about that. The game is not going to be too big for either one, and that was really evident through the first two practices out here today, in what they’ve been able to handle.

“The next guys - the defensive players - I feel really good about. Both Margus (Hunt) and Shawn (Williams) are guys who will continue to compete for more and more opportunity, and have an opportunity to earn it. They’re guys that are on the come in their game, and that’s what we really expected. But they’re doing a good job of showing well out here, with what we’re to do here. That’s been good.

“The offensive linemen, as a whole, we’re really excited about them, with the three guys that we picked. Cobi Hamilton, I’m excited about what he did out here today. He’s been battling a little bit of bronchitis, and he’s just getting over it the last 10 days or so. But he’s doing a good job. All in all, very pleased. And then Rex Burkhead: again, just what I expected. And Sean Porter showed he’s very natural, has great movement, and as a linebacker is a really good athlete. So I’m excited about the 10 guys. It’s good to get them going out here.”

When you said Rex Burkhead was ‘what you expected,’ what did you mean?

“Just the quickness in line, the ability to stick his foot in the ground and go from Point A to Point B. Just the things you saw from him on tape. His abilities as a receiver. I think he’ll be a guy also who will really uplift us on special teams and compete to be one of our core guys.”

So much of football seems to be having a feel for the game. A lot of young guys struggle with that, but it seems like you think some of these young guys have it…

“Obviously Tyler Eifert is the one. He’s going to be fine. He’s such a big, long man, and he’ll keep developing and learning to play with his pads down, when we get to that point. But he’s showing the ability right now to be such a great knee-bender that he’ll be able to fit in into those blocking situations. He’s doing the things we’re asking him to do right now, and he’s doing it well. He’ll just keep growing from there.”

You had guys out there today - DeQuin Evans and J.K. Schaffer - who have been around for a while. Is this a good opportunity for them?

“Great opportunity. DeQuin has been around for a little bit. But it is good to get back and play football. J.K. is kind of running the show, so it’s good to have him in there. He should have been at last year’s camp, and life would be a little higher than it is right now (laughs).”

Is that an ‘I told you so’?

“I always tell those guys that if they go somewhere else, they don’t always get the opportunity. We’re going to give you an opportunity here if you’re a young guy. I think that goes too with the

The Bengals will have two combined practices with the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 5-6 in the run-up to the team’s exhibition opener Aug. 8 in Atlanta.

The practices will be open to the public. Times are to be determined.

“I’m glad we were able to work this out with Mike and the Falcons,” said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, referring to Falcons head coach Mike Smith. “We’ve done some joint practices with other teams in Cincinnati in the past, and I think it helps our guys stay sharp and focused as we move through the preseason. You put yourself on the field with another team and let the competitive juices flow a little bit.”

The Bengals will be conducting training camp at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, with most sessions open to the public. The training camp period will run from July 25 through Aug. 15.
