Scouting Bengals Draft

The 2009 NFL draft is expected to be plentiful for the Cincinnati Bengals, who will have 11 picks this year. It is with all intents and purposes that the Bengals will look to add impact players on offense and/or defense in the early rounds and seek depth in the latter portion of the draft.

The Bengals organization is notorious for bucking the trend, so fans should prepare themselves for the unexpected on draft day.

Personally, I am not a Bengals fan, but feel very confident in saying that the team will have a successful draft this year. There are some very interesting prospects high on the team’s list who I like.

Top 5 needs: Offensive tackle, center, defensive end, running back, defensive back.

The Bengals are currently picking in the No. 6 position in round one and although offensive tackle seems to be the logical choice with a crippled O-line, the team could opt to go in different direction.

That being said, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to hear Ohio State running back Chris “Beanie” Wells’ name called as the Bengals first-round selection. The closer we get to draft day the more I keep hearing Wells’ name associated with the team’s pick.

Some may call the team’s interest in Wells nothing more than a smokescreen. However, I have reason to believe that the Bengals interest in the runner is very genuine.

If either offensive tackle, Jason Smith (Baylor) or Eugene Monroe (Virginia), are on the board when the Bengals make their selection, the decision is a pretty easy one. But if both are gone look for the Bengals to take the best available player and that could very well be Wells. Depending on how the chips fall with picks 1 thru 5. The team also holds offensive tackle Andre Smith (Alabama) in high regard, but is the risk greater than the reward?

Don’t rule out a trade here as well.

Second round

The Bengals would like nothing better than to snag hometown product Louisville center Eric Wood with the 38th overall pick, but he is unlikely to be available. Wood is the best center entering the draft in my book. The Bengals know exactly what they would be getting in Wood, and for that reason don’t count out the team taking an aggressive approach to obtain the versatile O-lineman. If not, the good people of Cincinnati may have to get used to seeing Wood in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform.

Centers Alex Mack (Cal) and Max Unger (Oregon) are also viable options. If the Bengals fail to pull the trigger on a center in the second-round they could look to a guy like Cecil Newton (Tennessee St.) on Day 2. Newton has been labeled by some NFL scouts as being a diamond in the rough.

OK, the Bengals have already soured on one injury prone RB, and don’t want another. The backs available later in the draft are just as good as Beanie and Moreno. I am starting to see Aaron Curry falling in some mocks. I still think Rey how do you spell his last name from USC is the best option for us.

You win iin the trenches. Go after the best lineman available, either on defense or offense. The Bengals are notorious for drafting poorly. I look for nothing to change in that regard.

Mike, Why do you think Rey Maualuga is the best pick? He’s not even the best prospect from his team. I wouldnt put it past the Bungles to make a terrible pick like that. Are you sure you are not Mike Brown? If the tackles arent available, Id go Aaron Curry or trade Chad and get Crabtree, the Bengals have no business trading a sixth overall pick.

I always like this time of year because of the draft. I have a few close friends who are Bengals season ticket hostages and they are either very excited or embarrassed after the draft. The end result is always sub-500. Now that you can count on!

I agree Big C! Eric Wood is the best center in the draft. That is why he’ll be a Steeler! Go Steelers!!

Bengals should take J.Smith or Monroe at 6. If not there trade down and probably still get Andre Smith plus more picks.

Big C, I agree with you. I was just telling someone yesterday not to be surprised if Wells becomes their num one pick. Injury prone or not, how do you pass on a stud like him? Look at him! He’s not Kajana Carter. He’s bigger and better. You have to take Wells and get a left tackle in the second round. This draft has dept in the O line area. Forget about Crabtree, Browns will snag him at num 5!

I will cancel my season tickets if they take Wells. He is soft, and has no heart. It will be Monroe or Curry with a center being taken in the 2nd and a RB with one of our 2 3rd round picks.

I agree with BnOPnther Wells is tooo soft of a back and this draft is loaded with RB. They will draft a RB in Rd #3! OT should be the first pick.

I’m not here to argue apples and oranges. Wells is not soft! Injury prone, maybe. You can’t tackle Wells low because he’ll step on you. He can’t tackle him high, because he’ll carry you. Turf toe doesn’t mean guy is soft. Mark my word, Chris Wells will be a stud in the NFL. God help us if he goes to an AFC North team.

Cowboys Rule: Man as bad as the Bengals have been you are the last one to say anything about us. 44-6 ring a bell? You are th=e richest team in the league and you havent won a playoff game in 13 years. Get a job you coward troll. Carlos, are you Beanie’s pr guy? Why are you pumping up the local boys? Beanie is not reight for the Benals and you know it. He is soft, injury proned and has no heart. Eric Wood will be a good player if healthy, but Alex Mack is the best cebter uin the draft, then maybe Wood and Unger. He should be there at 38 for us and we should get him. but if he is not, I have no problem with us going after Donald Brown.
