Former OSU quarterback Art Schlichter to be at Barnes and Noble in Miamisburg

Art Schlichter will be at the Barnes and Noble in Miamisburg (2619 Miamisburg-Centerville Drive) to discuss and sign copies of his new book “Busted the Rise and Fall of Art Schlichter” on Thursday, September 24th at 7pm. Schlichter was a star quarterback for Ohio State University who ended up being chosen by the Baltimore Colts in the first round of the 1982 draft only to be let go a few years later due to his rising gambling problems. Schlichter would end up spending 10 years of his life in 40 different prisons around Ohio, Baltimore, Indiana and Kentucky for fraud and racketeering, crimes he committed as he tried to obtain more money to feed his gripping addiction.

Schlichter’s 22 chapter tell-all highlights the highs and lows of his life: from his glory days at Ohio State to the sad details of his life on the run and then in prison. Schlichter struggles with the desire to gamble on a daily basis and avoids such things as reading point spreads in the newspaper. “It kinda gets the juices flowing so I don’t read them at all,” Schlichter told a large crowd at his book signing last week at a Barnes and Noble in Columbus.

Schlichter said that he wanted to write this book to help others who are struggling with addiction. “I want my life to serve as a warning to others; I truly hope this book can help someone quit gambling or get help for any addiction before things get really ugly for them.”

Schlichter has been out of prison for three years and has been busy with his radio job at WTVN out of Columbus and his assistant coaching position for a high school football team in Indiana. He is also called upon from time to time to help families of addicts conduct interventions for loved ones who are battling to survive. Schlichter does not want anyone to live the life he has had. “I don’t feel bad about spending ten years of my life in prison. I feel bad that I spent ten years of my daughters lives in prison. I missed watching them grow up and that was the worst punishment of all.”

Copies of “Busted, the Rise and Fall of Art Schlichter” are available wherever books are sold. Visit www.orangefrazer.com for more information.

I don’t want to sound uncaring because Art did/does have an addiction problem…but I wouldn’t pay a red cent for his book. or walk across the street to see him.He made his own bed, now he has to lay in it, not make money by telling us what a jerk he was/is.

Art has shown himself to be the ultimate con man. I wish him the best but am highly skeptical. His life has been defined by getting out of the slammer and finding a source (like a new book) to fund his habit until he breaks the law gets caught and goes back to prison.

I wonder if Art likes the Bengals at +4.5 this week?If this book came out 10 years after he got out of prison, I would buy it, but only 3 years out sounds like another scam. Did anyone see the ESPN story on him a few weeks ago? He was at this church talking about his “addictions”and “struggles” and at the end of the service the congregation took up an offering for his “charity”. The offering total was around $800, not bad for a days work. Time will tell but 3 years is not enough, give it 10 to see if he is truthful.

As a recovering addict myself, I can say that you are never truly cured of what has a hold on you, you just learn how to control it. I read Art’s book and nowhere in it does he say he will never gamble again, but he admits that the urge is always there. As a recoving addict you take life one day at a time for you never know when you will mess up again. I am glad Art wrote the book because it showed me that no matter how much money you have to gamble with, the odds are always against you. It also paints a very vivid picture, showing in full color how addiction destroys families. Con man or not, I got my money’s worth from reading the book.

Give the man the benefit of the doubt. He has “paid his debt to society.” Three years out is good and he is seek accountability and means to make an honest living. Best wishes #10…

How would you feel if your school board allowed this man to coach your high school football team? Ours did. Really, we allow 20-time felons in our schools to influence 14 to 18 year olds? What other person could commit this many felons and be in prison for this long and be allowed to coach kids at a public shcool. The ultimate con man at work.

I am glad Art is back on his way to recoverey. I can only hope that some of the money he earns from the book will go towards all the friends he borrowed money from ans never paid them back.
