Bengals to work out emerging QB prospect Randolph
There is another Cincinnati-area quarterback besides the UC Bearcats’ Tony Pike receiving attention from NFL teams leading up to the draft. Holy Cross senior Dominic Randolph has emerged as a top quarterback prospect sleeper.

The St. Xavier High School graduate is showing up on draft boards after two solid performances at Pro Days at Boston College and Massachusetts. Randolph impressed scouts and/or pro personnel with his passing skills and athleticism, creating a buzz.
“I don’t know much about the kid, but he did catch some people’s eyes at the workout,” one scout said this week. “I saw a lot of Drew Brees-type qualities in him. He seemed very poised and threw the ball extremely well with nice touch. I believe teams really took notice.”
The New York Giants are flying Randolph in for a meeting on April 11-12. He has also been invited to work out for the Cincinnati Bengals on April 13. The Philadelphia Eagles also could have some interest.
Randolph is projected as a rookie free agent, but teams’ sudden interest could elevate him to a late-round pick.
The Bengals are in the market for a passer to provide competition at the backup positions. Whether it is a quality veteran or rookie, the team will most certainly address the need.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Randolph is a real competitor and student of the game. He puts in extra time in the film room to help sharpen his skills at reading coverage. The quarterback is highly intelligent, scoring a 34 on the Wonderlic test. He’s extremely talented in terms of his physical skills.
Randolph has good size, quick feet and runs well. He’s an accurate passer and shows good consistency. He led the Holy Cross offense by completing 310 of 485 passes for 3,776 yards and 34 touchdowns during the 2009 campaign.
One of the knocks on the passer is a lack of arm strength. However, Holy Cross quarterbacks coach Andy McKenzie feels that won’t be an issue in the pros.
“I think Dom’s arm strength has improved every year,” McKenzie said. “He improved it with time in the weight room and throwing programs. Right now, he is throwing the ball with a lot of pop and it really explodes off his hand. I feel he can definitely get it done at the next level with his arm strength. It’s not John Elway, but is as good as anyone else out there.”
Randolph played in a spread offense reminiscent of the offense Buffalo ran, aka the K-Gun, with quarterback Jim Kelly. He has all the tools that teams look for in a quarterback but will have to adjust to the speed of the game and fine-tune his technique.
“Once Dom gets into a system and that right team finds him, it’s going to be tough to get him off the field,” McKenzie said. “He’ll do a lot of good things when he’s on the field.”

For his sake, I hope the Bengals don’t draft/sign him. I don’t see the Bengals’ coaching staff excel at developining talent. If this kid has what it takes, then he’d best be served with a team that has a winning tradition and can develop players to maximum ability. Pittsburgh comes to mind.

I agree! The Bengals’ track record for developing quarterbacks is atrocious. They cant develop anyone including first-round quarterbacks, Carson Palmer, Akili Smith, David Klingler, Wayne Peace, Jack Thompson.

Prior sucks. I get sick and tired of the buckeyes. Big schools get great recruits. The NFL is totally different.

Yeah, you are right….can’t develop QBs. Kenny Anderson stunk, Boomer was a piece of crap, and Palmer stinks. What a totally stupid comment.

Ben’s a playmaker but he’s far from a “Developed” QB. He still gets rattled and most importantly, as last year showed, with a stuffed running game, he’s nothing.
