The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have signed safety Tom Nelson to a two-year deal and placed safety Colt Anderson on the Injured Reserve list (knee).

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Nelson was originally a rookie free agent signing of Cincinnati in 2009. He appeared in 21 games with three starts for the Bengals from 2009-10, notching 34 tackles, two pass deflections and an interception. He spent the 2011 preseason with Cincinnati, but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">

Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson (foot) started against division rival Pittsburgh today.

With Benson near full strength, the Bengals were hoping for the same output and effort he displayed last week against Cleveland. The running back carried the ball 21 times for 106 yards and one touchdown. However, when asked after the game Sunday about the importance of the team establishing the run, Benson had this to say:

&amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t know how important it was,&amp;#8221; he said. &amp;#8220;We got it established but then we kind of went away from it.&amp;#8221;

That won&amp;#8217;t jive today against a 60-minute defense.

If the Bengals are to have any success on offense against Pittsburgh&amp;#8217;s defense they can&amp;#8217;t give up on the run. Benson was due for a breakout game against the Steelers. He&amp;#8217;s rushed the ball 94 times for 315 yards and two touchdowns in seven meetings. Aside from that, Benson hasn&amp;#8217;t had consecutive 100-yard rushing games this season. The time is now.

The Steelers are ranked sixth against the run and has allowed two 100-yard rushers this season. Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew hit the defense up for 96 yards on 22 carries.

Benson indeed is being given early carries. This could help take some pressure off rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who threw two fourth quarter interceptions in the teams&amp;#8217; last meeting in Week 10.

&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m determined to make big plays and always looking to create opportunities. At this point, it&amp;#8217;s whatever I can do,&amp;#8221; Benson said during the week.

Bengals cornerback Adam &amp;#8220;Pacman&amp;#8221; Jones, a fifth-year pro, has had a rocky start to his NFL career, to say the least. His brushes with the law are documented.

Putting the negative aside, though, Jones is transitioning as a player, and he turned in another solid performance in last Sunday&amp;#8217;s 23-20 win over Cleveland.

&amp;#8220;I was excited to be back on the field running around with my teammates,&amp;#8221; Jones said. &amp;#8220;I felt good out there and believe I played well. More important, we got the victory.&amp;#8221;

The cornerback blanketed Browns&amp;#8217; receivers, limiting them to minimal gains and/or opportunities. Jones was thrust into the starting lineup after Leon Hall was lost to a season-ending Achilles injury.

After a 12-month layoff due to a neck injury, Jones returned to the field this season against Seattle. His only play of the game was a 63-yard punt return and he subsequently suffered a hamstring injury. He missed the next two games only to return the following week to make two touchdown-saving plays against Baltimore.

The Bengals will need a big-play performance from Jones against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

&amp;#8220;This week we face an even bigger challenge in Pittsburgh,&amp;#8221; Jones said. &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re still in the hunt. It&amp;#8217;s going to be hard each week, but if we can grind out a victory we&amp;#8217;ll take it. We probably have one of the toughest divisions, if not the toughest in football. Our team is up for the challenge.&amp;#8221;

Many people have tried to write the troubled cornerback off, but he keeps clawing his way back, proving to be one tough hombre. You never hear much about Jones the player or teammate. It&amp;#8217;s always overshadowed by negative events.

According to Clif Marshall, performance director at Ignition, Jones brought a high level of intensity to the players&amp;#8217; organized workout during the lockout. Marshall said Jones was boisterous, yes, but worked hard and raised the performance of his teammates. Marshall added that Jones was likely the best all-around athlete in attendance and was never out-worked.

Jones has earned the respect of the coaching staff and teammates in Cincinnati with his regained focus. You can see that in the locker room. He&amp;#8217;s assumed somewhat of a leadership role this season, preaching to others what it will take to get to the next level.

&amp;#8220;Believe,&amp;#8221; Jones said. &amp;#8220;Everybody needs to stay on the same page. Coach (Marvin) Lewis has done a great job with us being on the same page. All we have to do is correct the little things and play hard. You can tell that this team is starting to believe because no one holds their head down when faced with adversity. I&amp;#8217;m happy and enjoying every minute of being a part of this team.&amp;#8221;

<title>Fear of failure driving Bengals&apos; Gresham</title>

Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s Jermaine Gresham is emerging as a top performing tight end this season. That&amp;#8217;s saying a lot considering the elite talent at the position league wide. Gresham is coming off a stellar performance in a 23-20 victory over Cleveland. The second-year tight end hauled in five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. His steady improvement could be attributed to his fear of failure.

&amp;#8220;I want be relevant,&amp;#8221; Gresham said. &amp;#8220;More than anything, I don&amp;#8217;t want to be a bust. That&amp;#8217;s been on my mind and I don&amp;#8217;t want to disappoint anyone around here. I just want to do my part and help this team win. I&amp;#8217;m going to make certain that I work harder than the next guy. I just don&amp;#8217;t want to be a bust or disappointment.&amp;#8221;

The Bengals selected Gresham with the 21st overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. In his first season with the club, he set a franchise record in receptions for a rookie tight end with 52. He&amp;#8217;s the second leading receiver on the team this season with 37 receptions for 370 yards and five touchdowns. The word bust doesn&amp;#8217;t appear to be in the player&amp;#8217;s foreseeable future.

&amp;#8220;I have a much better understanding of the game this season,&amp;#8221; Gresham said. &amp;#8220;I believe I&amp;#8217;m a better overall player understanding what defenses are doing. I have to continue to work hard and put myself in position to make plays. I like to think I&amp;#8217;m a little smarter in learning the game.&amp;#8221;

Head coach Marvin Lewis said in his Monday news conference that he thought Gresham made a couple of nice, athletic plays being flanked out. Lewis gave the impression that the team would like to do more with talented the tight end in various formations. Gresham&amp;#8217;s versatility as well athleticism presents a matchup problem for any defense.

Pittsburgh&amp;#8217;s defense could have their hands full this week attempting to corral the Bengals&amp;#8217; 17th-ranked pass offense. If Cincinnati can effectively run a spread on offense and stretch the defense, it could mean curtains for the Steelers. The game plan for the Bengals is to score often on offense and bust&amp;#8217;em in the mouth on defense.

&amp;#8220;This week&amp;#8217;s game is huge,&amp;#8221; Gresham said. &amp;#8220;The Steelers have a great team and it&amp;#8217;s going to be very competitive. This is another must-win game. In order to move forward, we have to get better as a whole by putting up more numbers, yards and points. That&amp;#8217;s our goal for this game.&amp;#8221;

I&amp;#8217;m back again for Week 2 of &amp;#8220;Catching&amp;#8221; with A.J. Green. I learned some interesting things about the Bengals star receiver, but first an injury update.

Green said he expects to return to practice this week and see how things go with the injured knee. He hopes to be ready for the game against Cleveland on Sunday. He said it was difficult standing on the sideline unable to help his teammates in a disappointing loss to Baltimore.

Big C: I understand you had an interesting hobby growing up. You were a juggler?

A.J.: Laugh&amp;#133; Yes, it was something to do when I was in elementary school. I thought it was something I would like to try. I enjoyed it and dedicated myself to it for five years. I would juggle balls, bowling pins and rings. Just little things like that.

Big C: What would be the craziest thing you ever tried to juggle?

A.J.: I would have to say three bricks (laugh).

Big C: Do you think those juggling skills helped you in any way?

A.J.: Oh yeah, definitely! I feel like it helped me ata young age to establish good eye-hand coordination, timing and looking passes into my hands. I think it has helped me tremendously.

Big C: Who was your nemesis going up against in college?

A.J.: I would have to say Patrick Peterson.

Big C: What made him such a challenge?

A.J.: He&amp;#8217;s a big, physical, corner who could run stride for stride with you.

Big C: What is Superman&amp;#8217;s kryptonite when it comes to junk food?

A.J.: Man, everyday I have to have me a King Size Reese&amp;#8217;s and a Mountain Dew. I don&amp;#8217;t know what it is, but it&amp;#8217;s something I have to have every day (laugh).

Big C: What food can you do without?

A.J.: Ooooh, I don&amp;#8217;t eat mashed potatoes.

Big C: What is your favorite movie?

A.J.: Fast and Furious Five.

Big C: What is your favorite chick flick?

A.J.: Bridesmaids! I love that movie. It was funny (laugh).

Big C: What did you want to be growing up?

A.J.: I always thought it would be cool to work at an amusement park (laugh).

Big C: Now you just make circus catches.

A.J.: Yeah! LOL

Big C: Assuming you play videos are you a Madden fan?

A.J.: No, not a Madden fan. I&amp;#8217;m a Call of Duty fan all day. All day! I&amp;#8217;m on that game every night for like four hours (laugh).

Big C: Who is going to be the next stud coming out of the University of Georgia?

A.J.: Oooh, that could be a number of guys. We have a really good class coming out this year. I&amp;#8217;m going with my college roommate, Bacarri Rambo.

Big C: You told me during an interview before the draft that you wanted to help change the image of the Bengals if drafted by the team. Does that still hold true?

A.J.: Yes! I was so excited when my name was called by the Cincinnati Bengals on draft day. I was like, Oh, yes! With the veteran guys like Jerome (Simpson) and Andre (Caldwell) helping me along, I believe we can turn this thing around on offense along with Andy (Dalton). Overall, what we have on defense speaks volumes to what we have as a team. This city has life now and there&amp;#8217;s a different vibe around here with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Thanks again, A.J.!

Check back next week for more &amp;#8220;Catching&amp;#8221; up with A.J.

Happy Thanksgiving y&amp;#8217;all! Gooble, Gobble!

Cincinnati is in a state of flux this week on defense after losing starting cornerback Leon Hall for the season due to injury. The Bengals are weighing their options on whether to start either Adam Jones or Kelly Jennings in place of Hall this week.

According to Jennings on Friday, Nov. 18, the team will make a game-time decision on who will get the nod against Baltimore on Sunday.

&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;ll be ready if my number is called,&amp;#8221; Jennings said. &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;ve been playing on third downs and have to prepare myself mentally. Going from 20 plays to possibly 80 plays you have to take on a whole different mindset. I&amp;#8217;m prepared to get the job done when called upon.&amp;#8221;

Cincinnati acquired Jennings this summer in a trade with Seattle to add depth to the secondary. Head coach Marvin Lewis said in his news conference on Wednesday that more is expected out of Jennings with Hall out.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Jennings may not be the biggest corner around, but he utilizes his speed and quickness to make plays. He does a nice job breaking on the ball and will mix it up with receivers. The former Miami Hurricane filled in admirably when Hall went down in the game against Pittsburgh.

&amp;#8220;Baltimore is going to be another fight, but we have to play our game,&amp;#8221; Jennings said. &amp;#8220;We don&amp;#8217;t have any real superstars on defense. Our coaching staff has done an outstanding job preparing us all, so when your number is called it&amp;#8217;s time to play. I&amp;#8217;m ready to step up.&amp;#8221;

When I approached A.J. Green&amp;#8217;s representatives, CAA Sports, about doing a weekly chat with the Bengals&amp;#8217; standout rookie receiver, they were skeptical. I was told Green&amp;#8217;s dedication to football might get in the way.

Surprisingly, Green said, &amp;#8220;Tell him I&amp;#8217;ll call him after work on Monday.&amp;#8221;

That&amp;#8217;s right. He refers to practice as WORK, which I found interesting and a testament to his professionalism and work ethic.

First, an injury update. Green hyperextended his right knee after an acrobatic touchdown grab Sunday in the loss to Pittsburgh. He said the knee remains a little stiff but thinks he&amp;#8217;ll be ready to go Sunday against Baltimore.

Big C: What is your favorite restaurant?

A.J.: I love Outback! (laugh)

Big C: What do you usually order?

A.J.: I usually get the porterhouse steak, two lobster tails and a salad.

Big C: Being from the South, where do you get your soul food fix up north?

A.J.: My parents are up here a lot since moving me in this summer, so I don&amp;#8217;t have to go very far (laugh). They do a lot of cooking. It&amp;#8217;s definitely a blessing to have them here.

Big C: What is your favorite TV show?

A.J.: Oh, I like to watch Storage Wars. I bet you can find a lot of good deals there. (laugh)

Big C: Bargain shopper?

A.J.: Wise shopper! (laugh)

Big C: This is for the ladies. Are you single?

A.J.: No, no, no! I&amp;#8217;ve been with my girlfriend for 3 1/2 years.

Big C: What is the most unique thing you can tell me about teammate Geno Atkins?

A.J.: The guy is incredibly powerful. When I came to the University of Georgia everybody talked about how strong he was. I remember how he would be on the sideline saying I&amp;#8217;m going to make a play. Sure enough, Geno would go out there and get a sack.

Thanks A.J.!

<title>Nelson: Bengals still contenders</title>

Sunday&amp;#8217;s 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers should not be viewed as evidence that the Bengals are pretenders as opposed to contenders.

At least that&amp;#8217;s the opinion of free safety Reggie Nelson, who had words for the non-believers.

&amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t care what they say,&amp;#8221; Nelson said. &amp;#8220;As long as we stick together and continue playing hard-nosed football they can keep on talking. We&amp;#8217;re still going to play hard whether they like it or not. There are no quitters in this locker room. The Steelers are a tough team, but I think our record still speaks for itself.&amp;#8221;

Nelson played a solid game, combining for five tackles and one pass defensed. He had a near interception of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger but the ball was jarred loose by teammate Leon Hall. Nelson also prevented a potential touchdown by delivering a slobber-knocker blow to the chest of tight end Heath Miller short of the goal line.

&amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re not going to make it easy for anybody,&amp;#8221; Nelson said. &amp;#8220;We just have to stay together as a team and continue to play hard. Just because we had this little bump in the road doesn&amp;#8217;t mean things have to fall apart. We made a few mistakes but have to limit those and keep playing our game.&amp;#8221;

The 5-foot-11, 208-pound Nelson has been a welcome acquisition since being traded to the team last September from Jacksonville. He calls his time with Cincinnati &amp;#8220;fresh air&amp;#8221; after some disappointments with the Jaguars. The Bengals wanted to add a playmaking safety to their secondary and Nelson has provided that with his ball-hawking skills. He fits well into defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer attacking defense.

Nelson said Zimmer is doing an exceptional job with the defense and the players have bought into his philosophy.

The Bengals will be faced with another daunting task this week on the road against Baltimore. The team&amp;#8217;s next three games are against opponents in their own division. Cincinnati&amp;#8217;s secondary is faced with a difficult challenge trying to replace starting cornerback Leon Hall, who is out for the season with injury.

&amp;#8220;Things aren&amp;#8217;t going to get any easier over the next few weeks,&amp;#8221; Nelson said. &amp;#8220;We have some players down and other guys have to step up and fill those shoes. When your number is called you have to go out and perform.  That&amp;#8217;s what we get paid for.&amp;#8221;

BENGALS RELEASE

The NFL is announcing today that Bengals QB Andy Dalton has been named the league&amp;#8217;s Offensive Rookie of the Month for October.

Dalton led the Bengals to a 4-0 record in October, becoming the first Bengals rookie QB to lead four straight victories. Two of the wins featured fourth-quarter comebacks.

On Oct. 2 vs. Buffalo, the Bengals trailed 17-3 at halftime and won 23-20. In the second half, Dalton threw a TD pass, ran for another TD and led a 56-yard drive for the winning field goal as time expired. In a 30-20 win on Oct. 9 at Jacksonville, the Bengals trailed 20-16 before Dalton led a late TD drive that featured a nine-yard completion to the Jaguars 10 on a fourth-and-six play.

&amp;#8220;The leadership Andy has brought as a rookie is remarkable,&amp;#8221; said Bengals OT Andrew Whitworth. &amp;#8220;The kid shows gumption. He&amp;#8217;s in our face. It takes a lot for a rookie to do that.&amp;#8221;

The Bengals drafted Dalton in the second round (35th overall) out of Texas Christian, where he posted a 42-7 record as a starter.

Dalton passed for an average of 227.3 yards in the four October wins. He posted a 127.6 passer rating in the second half of the Buffalo comeback. In an Oct. 16 win over Indianapolis, his 78.1 completion percentage was the Bengals&amp;#8217; best in their last 30 games. He threw for six TDs and five INTs in October and had a passer rating of 83.1

Dalton threw for a pair of TDs last week as the Bengals completed October with a 34-12 win at Seattle, posting their largest winning margin in their last 38 road games.

Dalton is the third Bengal to win an NFL Rookie of the Month Award. RB Corey Dillon was the Offensive winner in December of 1997, and LB Odell Thurman was the Defensive winner in September of 2005.

Rap artist Kool Moe Dee and country music superstar Toby Keith used the catchphrase &amp;#8220;How Ya Like Me Now&amp;#8221; to make hit records. Bengals right offensive tackle Andre Smith is using the same phrase to silence his critics who questioned his desire on the gridiron.

Smith, in his third year with Cincinnati, is starting to live up to expectations this season and prove he can dominate. The University of Alabama product has allowed only one sack and is evolving into a bookend on the line.

He&amp;#8217;s gone from dud to stud in a short amount of time.

&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s time for me to do what I&amp;#8217;m supposed to do to help the team,&amp;#8221; Smith said. &amp;#8220;It was time to give up the poor me attitude and just do something about it. It&amp;#8217;s working well for me and the offensive line as a unit.&amp;#8221;

The measuring stick in Smith&amp;#8217;s progress came in Week 6 against Indianapolis. Smith and left tackle Andrew Whitworth negated the pass rush of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

Smith, heavily scrutinized since being drafted by Cincinnati in the first round in 2009, no longer is the butt of the jokes that surfaced after his shirtless pre-draft workout revealed an alarmingly jiggly physique. He reported to training camp in shape this year.

&amp;#8220;I think I earned a lot of respect when I came to camp at the weight I did,&amp;#8221; Smith said. &amp;#8220;I earned the team&amp;#8217;s overall respect by showing my willingness to work hard.&amp;#8221;

The 6-foot-4, 335-pound Smith said his mom deserves most of the credit for feeding him a steady diet of fish, grilled chicken and vegetables during the offseason. It&amp;#8217;s paying off because a more trimmed Smith is playing with better technique and working harder.

&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m happy where I am right now, but I still want to get better as a football player,&amp;#8221; Smith said. &amp;#8220;I want to continue to work on my fundamentals and work hard for the team.  It was time for me to step up. I felt it in my heart and I no longer want to let the team or myself down.&amp;#8221;

How Ya Like Me Now&amp;#8230;

<title>Bengals Dalton top rookie quarterback?</title>

The play of quarterback Andy Dalton has made the name Carson Palmer an afterthought in Cincinnati, where the Bengals are 4-2 due in large part to the rookie&amp;#8217;s efficiency.

Dalton has been impressive in his last two appearances completing 71 percent of his passes for 442 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He was most efficient against Indianapolis, connecting on 25 of 32 passes for 264 yards a touchdown and no interceptions. You can see the game starting to slow down for the passer with each outing - and Palmer becoming more and more of a distant memory (or a punchline, some might say, after he threw three interceptions in his Raiders debut last week).

Here&amp;#8217;s what former Bengals QB Boomer Esiason had to say about Dalton&amp;#8217;s progress:

&amp;#8220;He&amp;#8217;s so far ahead of me when I was a rookie, it&amp;#8217;s not even funny. After my rookie year (general manager) Paul Brown and (head coach) Sam Wyche were going into the offseason looking at each other cross-eyed.&amp;#8221;

Before anointing Dalton the next Esiason (the last quarterback to lead Cincinnati to a Super Bowl), there is room for improvement.

Dalton must do a better job anticipating his throws on the deep routes. He tends to overshoot wide-open receivers running deep routes releasing the ball early in an attempt to compensate for a lack of arm strength. He will also try and force passes to covered receivers. However, Dalton does have good mechanics and the intangibles one looks for in a franchise quarterback. He plays with confidence and has a bit of swag about him in the lock room as well.

For me, Dalton is proving to be the best rookie quarterback in the league this season. I know what you&amp;#8217;re saying. What about Cam Newton? I&amp;#8217;m not ready to sip the Cam Kool-Aid just yet, but quenching my thirst with the Dalton Kool-Aid like a 40 oz. Besides, the Bengals are winning and the Carolina Panthers are cellar dwellers in the NFC South.

I expect Dalton to continue his progress and slice through Seattle&amp;#8217;s defense like a Christmas ham. Bengals pour on the offense Sunday, winning 27-6.

See more on the Brilliant Bengals&amp;#8230;

CINCINNATI &amp;#8212; The Cincinnati Bengals appear to have a star in the making in rookie first-round pick A.J. Green.

Green already has made fans forget about Chad Ochocinco and his antics. A crowd pleaser since training camp, the former University of Georgia standout is letting his performance speak for him as he turns in one outstanding play after another without the done-to-death celebrations.

&amp;#8220;A.J. is a playmaker,&amp;#8221; receivers coach James Urban said after Sunday&amp;#8217;s defeat of Buffalo in Paul Brown Stadium. &amp;#8220;We keep preaching to him over and over that playmakers have to make plays. When he got the opportunity to make a play, he did. It&amp;#8217;s evident A.J. has superb ball skills. All he needs to do is keep learning the offense and maintain his focus.&amp;#8221;

The 6-foot-4, 207-pound Green caught four passes for 118 yards against Buffalo . He leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and is tied for second with Jermaine Gresham with two touchdowns.

There were growing pains a week earlier against San Francisco when Green caught four passes for 29 yards and was flagged for two false starts. He worked overtime preparing for the Bills.

&amp;#8220;I blame myself for those miscues,&amp;#8221; he said. &amp;#8220;I had to practice hard leading up to this game. When my number is called I&amp;#8217;m going to try and make a play. That&amp;#8217;s all I did was attack the ball when it was in the air. My time came and I made the play.&amp;#8221;

Green made two acrobatic grabs on Sunday. When asked if fans could expect to see more of the same, the receiver seemed willing to oblige.

&amp;#8220;Most definitely,&amp;#8221; Green said. &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m trying to push myself to be great. That&amp;#8217;s one of the steps I have to take is making those great catches in big moments when my team needs to be lifted up. I told Coach (Jay) Gruden to just give me a chance to make plays, and he did. I have been waiting for this moment my entire life. My job now is to make the most of it.&amp;#8221;

<title>Atkins a bright spot for Bengals</title>

Sunday&amp;#8217;s 13-8 loss to the San Francisco 49ers was quite a letdown for the Cincinnati Bengals, who were ready to start fast in their home opener.

&amp;#8220;We tried to come up with energy,&amp;#8221; defensive tackle Geno Atkins said. &amp;#8220;We just came up short.&amp;#8221;

The game was blacked out in Cincinnati and Dayton, but there was no need to fret. Mowing the lawn arguably provided more excitement than this sleep aid.

The Bengals did, in fact, start fast, driving 76 yards in 12 plays on the opening possession for a 22-yard field goal. But the offense sputtered the rest of the way.

Atkins, in his second year out of Georgia, said the defense needed to compensate better.

&amp;#8220;Sometimes the offense is going to stall, but it&amp;#8217;s up to the defense to get the ball back and build confidence on offense,&amp;#8221; Atkins said. &amp;#8220;That&amp;#8217;s what we tried to do. In order for us to get better as a defense we have to cause turnovers and score. I&amp;#8217;m not sure what the percentages are, but if the defense scores it rules in favor of that team winning. If we can to that it will increase our odds to win games.&amp;#8221;

The defense held Frank Gore, one of the league&amp;#8217;s premier rushers, to 42 yards on 17 carries, and allowed only 201 yards through the air.

Atkins, who has played a big part in the defense&amp;#8217;s success early in the season, accounted for three tackles and a sack while providing constant pressure on the quarterback.

Although he is considered undersized by NFL standards for the tackle position, Atkins has proven to be stout against the run. He fills a gap well and does a nice job penetrating the pocket in pass situations to pressure the quarterback. He displays incredible strength and plays with a low center of gravity and leverage.

&amp;#8220;I work on my technique and watch a lot of film in order to know my opponent,&amp;#8221; Atkins said. &amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s important for me to continue to improve because you&amp;#8217;re going against the best of the best each week. In practice, you have to practice like it&amp;#8217;s game day.&amp;#8221;

Sunday&amp;#8217;s challenge: Buffalo.

&amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re coming off a tough loss where we put our hearts on the line but couldn&amp;#8217;t finish,&amp;#8221; Atkins said. &amp;#8220;There are a lot of positives to take from the game and build on. We played well as a unit and have to take that into this week&amp;#8217;s game.&amp;#8221;

Player&amp;#8217;s agent confirms that the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms on a one-year incentive laden contract with defensive end Johnathan Fanene. The seven-year pro is expected to compete for a starting role this season.

The Samoan-born Fanene, a seventh-round draft pick (No. 233 overall) in 2005 from Utah, has seven quarterback sacks in 55 career. Six came in 2009.

Last season, Fanene was placed on injured reserve Nov. 18 with a hamstring injury and played in just two games, finishing with four tackles.

Big C just received confirmation from representatives this morning that the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with halfback Brian Leonard.

Leonard (6-1, 225) played in 11 games and had nine rushes for 61 yards in 2010, including four fourth-down conversions, two of them after taking a direct snap on fake punts. Leonard also caught 20 passes for 137 yards and hauled in his first career TD. He missed games one and two due to rehab from a foot sprain suffered in preseason opener.

Leonard is expected to play an expanded role in the Bengals West-Coast offense this season.
