Do you have a favorite number?
Most of us have some superstitions whether we admit it or not. Do you try not to step on cracks in the sidewalk? Do you avoid walking under ladders? Common sense, actually. How do you feel about black cats? (I love’em).
Ever since I can remember I have had a favorite number. It is 7. It might have something to do with the fact that I was born on the seventh day of the month? That number has always seemed significant to me. Call it superstition.
A new book is validating some of my feelings about it. “Seven - the Number for Happiness, Love, and Success” (Twelve) by Jacqueline Leo just came out this week. (Of course it was published on the 7th).
Leo claims that this number is special. Why else would there be 7 days of the week? 7 stages of grief? 7 Wonders of the World? 7 notes in the musical scale? 7 seas? Heck, there are even 7 ingredients in a Big Mac! (I won’t let that fact spoil it for me).
Do you have a favorite number? What is it? Why is that one your favorite? How did you choose it? Is it also a lucky number? Do you have any superstitions? What are they?

The number 7 is my favorite. To me it is a heavenly number…used for so many reasons throughout the Bible. 911 was my favorite number as that is my birthday. Still enjoy the day when it comes around…as long as they keep coming and I am here to celebrate them. But it is also the number for emergencies and it holds one of the most tragic significant events in history.

My favorite # is 13! Perhaps because I was born on the 13th? Friday the 13th is usually a GOOD day for me, so I do think it brings me a little luck. Superstitions are nothing more than a form of paranoia. I’m not one to keep an eye to the sky in case a house falls. To blame a cat, crack or number on an event is to give them power. Just like the number 666 - it only has merit and meaning of something bad, if you LET it!

As a kid, I always tried to get the number 20 for sports (the # of my 2 favorite athletes) but I haven’t had a favorite number since.

I have used the number 8 for meditation. Perhaps because the number shows some sort of completion. There is the number 514 which appears to have a great deal of significance in my life. And, at times haunts me.

It is believed that humans probably linked the number seven with mystical powers over 5000 years ago, in the time of the Sumerians, specifically in Southern Iraq. Ancient civilizations often relied on the stars and the heavens to give them signs and suggestions when making important decisions. This studying of the heavens for “godly guidance” helped lead to the development of astronomy. The ancient stargazers noted that there were seven bodies in the sky that stood out from all the rest. Each of these seven was believed to be, or at least represent, a god. They were the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. Coincidentally, the names for our seven days of the week were actually derived from these seven heavenly bodies. It’s possible that this could have been the beginning of the widespread use of 7 among a large swath of the worldwide religions of that time. From the first attribution of godliness or godly power applied to these seven heavenly bodies, the number 7 has enjoyed wide popularity in all world religions as representative of something good and divinely powerful. Or you can call it “lucky” if you prefer a less theistic interpretation. And now, over 50 centuries later, despite everything we have learned about our universe, its complex interactions and seemingly infinite number of stellar inhabitants, we still haven’t shaken the superstitious beliefs of our ancient ancestors surrounding something as innocuous as a number. Vick, we humans are such silly animals.

8! I was born on the 8th. 5 siblings and 2 parents and me add up to 8. 8 hour work day. 8 days a week, according to the Beatles. I don’t walk on cracks. I know it and still think it’s bizarre.
