Amazon flexing book publishing muscle…
Amazon.com sells more books on-line than anybody else. Amazon has taken the early lead in selling electronic books with their proprietary Kindle eBook reader. Ever nimble, Amazon is now making a foray into publishing traditional books on their own Amazon imprints.
And they are taking a distinctly different approach. They have only published a few traditional books so far but their ambitions are far from modest. Amazon plans to re-issue some books which have been allowed to go out of print. They hope to woo some known authors away from their current publishers. And most impressively, Amazon.com is making plans to create an imprint for works that will be translated into English. These would be books that were published in various non-English speaking countries. That could be big. We need to look no further than Stieg Larrson’s mega-blockbuster Millenium trilogy to see the impact that translated works can have. Larsson originally wrote those books in Swedish.
