Dayton Band Playoffs reach semi-finals

There are only four bands left standing in the 2009 Dayton Band Playoffs. This week the final two bands will be determined for the September 26th Playoff final at Canal Street Tavern.

Here is a run down of this week’s semi-final match-ups.

Wednesday, September 2nd at Canal Street Tavern: Skilless Villains vs Oxymoronatron

I do not know who will win, but I know that Wednesday’s semi-final will be fun and entertaining. My electro-robot-punk friends in Oxymoronatron will pull out all the stops in the semi-final. They were defeated last year in the semi-final round, and I know that think they can make the finals this year.

But, Oxy’s opponent, rock group Skilless Villains, told me that their fans will help them make the finals.

“Our fans in the Mercer Co. area as well as our fans in the Columbus/Southern Ohio area have really been great. These people drive something like an hour and a half one way to watch us play until 2 am on a Wednesday and then drive an hour and a half back to the respective abodes to sleep for 3 hrs and go to work the next day. That to us that is awe inspiring. We are so blessed to have such supportive fans,” said the band.

September 3rd at Canal Street Tavern: Good English vs Turkish Delights

The edge in this one is most likely with Good English. They have packed Canal Street Tavern in every round, and have garnered the most number of votes thus far of any band in the competition.

But, the indie-pop-rock trio Turkish Delights are hungry to win and to be heard.

“Each show we play, whether it be within the confines of the Dayton Band Playoffs or not, gives us a chance to play our music for some people that have never heard/seen us before. We put a lot into what we do, i guess the hope is that people can get something out of it,” said Turkish Delights front-man Josh.

Attend the shows, and vote for the band that you feel is the best. Not your friends.

The Story Changes hometown release show

Singer/Guitarist Mark Mcmillon for the Dayton-based the Story Changes hooked me up with a copy of the band’s new split with the Arizona band Let Go entitled Analogies.

To be honest I normally stay away from ‘Split’ releases because they usually lack in continuity. But, not Analogies, it is as adhesive as super-glue.

Unlike most splits the two bands alternate songs and build upon one another. Let Go and the Story Changes make sense and fit well together despite the difference in musical styles.

Two for the price of one. Get it.

The Story Changes new songs are upbeat and uplifting rock tunes that sound huge for only a two piece. The songs are catchy, clever, and climactic picking up where 2007’s The Way of the Dinosaur left off.

The band, who just got back to Dayton after a coast-to-coast tour, will hold their hometown CD release show for Analogies at Blind Bob’s Saturday, August 22nd.

Also playing is 8-Bit Revival and Stone the Mayor Sheriffs.

Mcmillon and Poppy will then jump back on the road in support of the new disc.

The band is so busy that I get tired just checking their show schedule.

But, when its good, its really good. Right, Mark? Thanks for the disc. I will see you at Blind Bob’s Saturday.

Buy the record at the show or hit up www.fdrrecords.com.

Tony Hotel Saturday in Yellow Springs

My drummer friend Tony Hotel is playing a very rare live show this Saturday, August 15th, at Brother Bear’s Coffee House in Yellow Springs.

Hotel, who believes that “music is rhythm,” is playing two sets Saturday and is encouraging fans and friends to join into the show.

“I’m going to make the last set a jam for rhythm and dancers, bring your own rhythm instrument and join me onstage,” said Hotel.

Hotel’s music incorporates digital music with live drums. She uses unique and unconventional instrumentation touching on jazz and rock.

Hotel, who was invited to represent Dayton at last year’s South-by-Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, released her debut cd earlier this year entitled Drums is Art. It is available at Toxic Beauty Records in Yellow Springs and Gem City Records.

Squid’s Eye show Friday at Blind Bob’s

Dayton-based record label Squid’s Eye records will be putting on their second sponsored show of the year this Friday, August 14th, at Blind Bob’s.

Squid’s Eye bands Yakuza Heart Attack and Astro Fang will perform along with their friends from New York, Starscream and Anamanaguchi.

But, that’s not all Squid’s Eye fans. Your favorite label has a couple surprises in store for you at the show.

Yakuza Heart Attack will have advanced copies of their new album entitled II for sale more than a month before the release date.

Also, Astro Fang will be pushing a new limited edition 4-song tour EP.

Founder of Squid’s Eye Records, Tony Gilbert, let me preview a bit of each disc.

My advice, drink cheap beer and land a copy of the instrumental electro-pop band Yakuza Heart Attack’s new disc. Your stomach may hate you, but your ears and dancing shoes will be happy.

Gilbert told me that Squid’s Eye will have a very busy second half of 2009 .

“We have planned upcoming releases from Human Reunion, Scott Deadelus, Keith Kawaii, the Sailing, Ceschi Ramos, Smug Brothers, HCMJ, and the Happy Planets. With the Spooks, Cry Baby Genius, Joey Deady, Astro Fang, and Five Deadly Venoms also working on new albums for Squids Eye,” said Gilbert.

Not bad for a label just over two years old with a focus on Dayton bands.

Gilbert, who used to operate nationally focused Net31 records, gave that up to start Squid’s Eye in 2007. Net31 was established and successful, but Gilbert became burnt out and eventually decided to stop releasing “other peoples” music and focus on local artists instead.

“A lot of people say I was an idiot for shutting down something that was sure to provide finical security in favor of staying in Dayton and releasing music from people I’m friends with,” said Gilbert. “But I show them Felt Tip Cinema by Keith Kawaii and they shut up,” he added.
