Hiders to play acoustic at Peach’s

I realize that the name Alletzhouser is more than a comfortable mouthful, but I suggest that you learn and memorize it’s pronunciation.

The full name is Billy Alletzhouser and he is the front-man for the Cincinnati roots-rock band The Hiders.

The Hiders are a rising stars in the Midwest and quickly getting adds to radio playlists across the country.

Their debut cd, entitled Valentine, earned the band high acclaim and artist to watch honors on the Public Radio show Fresh Air last summer.

The band has spent much of this year working on the follow-up to Valentine and is still hoping to have their sophomore release in stores sometime this fall.

The Hiders have also had some line-up changes at drums, guitar, and bass since the last record. The new members to the band all have impressive resume’s that most notably include the Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers.

Catch the low-toned Alletzhauser accompanied by melody-mate Beth Harris on Saturday, August 4th, at Peach’s in Yellow Springs for a rare acoustic performance.

The two will be opening for the talented Chris McCoy from Columbus. Show starts at 9pm.

To listen to brand new demo’s from Alletzhauser just posted visit myspace.com/billyalletzhauser. To hear a sample of The Hiders tunes or to check out their upcoming calendar visit them at myspace.com/thehiders.

Once-ler’s new album reviewed

The new record from Dayton rock vets Once-ler is eleven tracks and 51 minutes of downtrodden groove-driven metal with Maynard-like melodies and moments of acoustic carried blues and beautiful slide guitars and mandolins.

Oh, and a whole lot of maturity.

Once-ler, who has dedicated the past ten years to making music, demonstrates their growth and love for their craft on their newest release entitled Last Day Of Summer.

The proof lies in the music and it’s polarities from start to finish.

They begin the record with a heavy-handed riffed out song called Fear Monger that immediately and cynically warns that “the end is near and the stench of fear is all over everything.”

They end with the album’s instrumental title track that builds with a slide mandolin and an acoustic guitar that together actually sounds like the last song that the world would ever hear as it vanished beneath a giant flaming meteor (or at least that is how the cover art depicts the Last Day of Summer).

Lyrically the album is written with the urgency of a doomsday premonition, and on many tracks, such as the hard-hitting Wing Attack and Whatever Happened to the World, the lyrics flirt with a bit of political satire.

My favorite track lands at number 8 and is titled Charlie Hustle. It intros with a snare-popping drum and rich clean electric guitar. Then slows to the haunting voice of singer Reif singing “I wave my goodbye’s as I light myself on fire.”

Last Day of Summer, the new record by Once-ler, will be for sale for the first time at the band’s cd release show this Friday, August 3rd, at Canal Street Tavern.

Show begins at 9 pm and “Battle for X-Fest” finalists Accidently on Purpose will open the show.

To hear a sample of the new disc as well as more details about it’s release click on the band’s website Once-ler.net or find them on the space at myspace.com/onceler.

The Professors return

Something has been missing around the streets of Dayton; the swagger and sounds of the Professors.

It has been four months since the 70’s throwback rock band has taken the stage and filled the air with screams, organs, and energy.

But, the Professors will end their show-less drought Thursday, July 26th, when the band performs at Walnut Hills. Show starts at 10 pm.

In a recent blog written on the band’s myspace page (myspace.com/theprofessors) the band explained their absence as “time to write a new set and work on a new record.”

The blog, which playfully refers to the band as the “TP5” or the Professors five, states that the band hopes to have the new album out by late summer.

I can not wait.

Playoffs second round beginning Thursday

Like the weather and politics; local music changes very quickly.

In a previous post I mentioned that the second round of the Dayton Band Playoffs was set to begin on Sunday, July 29th.

However, due to scheduling conflicts the second round will begin this Thursday, July 26th with jam-rockers The Sandals going head-to-head against Plogiston Theory.

The Sandals, who tied for fourth place in last year’s Dayton Band Playoffs, believes that 2007 is their year to be champs.

“Overall I think we have a pretty good chance at winning this thing,” said Sandals bass player Mike. “We just love friendly competition,” he added

Since last year the band has added a new member in keyboardists Norman who also plays in fellow local jam-band the Maji.

The Sandals were second overall in most votes after the first round and head into Thursdays second round showdown with a lot of momentum.

Visit The Sandals on the space at myspace.com/thesandalsmusic to hear their music and read more about them.

Here is the final standings from round one of the Canal Street Tavern Dayton Band Playoffs 2007.

Dayton Band Playoffs in full swing

The first round of this year’s Canal Street Tavern Dayton Band Playoffs will conclude Thursday night, July 19th, with the Five Deadly Venoms, In the Dark, and Ohio Pie Factory performing at 9 pm on the Canal Street Stage.

The Playoffs began mid-June with 21 bands battling to be crowned champ. After the first round of competition the top 16 overall vote getters will move on and perform in round two.

In the second round, beginning July 29th at Canal Street Tavern, bands will square off head-to-head and the top vote getter from each night will advance.

Other second round rules are that bands are required to play two 40 minute sets and as always the fans in attendance will decide the winner through paper ballot.

Some familiar faces are again in this year’s competition including last year’s semi-finalist and jam-rockers The Sandals.

Other favorites include the keyboard-pop band Yakuza Heart Attack, old-time folk-rockers The Umbrella Men, the fun rock n’ roll band Fantasy Farm, and Dayton rock veterans Jonesin’.

Some of the newer talent in the competition have already turned some heads like the Audible Influence who are the top vote getters after one round.

The finals are tentatively scheduled for September 14th at Canal Street.

Local bluesman Reece Lincoln on the CBS Early Show

An exciting piece of music news slipped by me last week, and I think it deserves some attention.

West Milton blues musician Reece Lincoln and his band, Midnight Son, was recently featured on the CBS Early Show.

Last Monday Midnight Son’s music and performance was shown on the national television show as part of a summer long band competition entitled Live in the Living Room: Battle of the Bands.

Midnight Son was chosen as one of the top 27 bands to make it into the nationwide competition.

Unfortunately, last week they were eliminated from the competition when they lost a online vote from CBS viewers. Producers of the show said that the vote was the closest in the contest history as the band only lost by one percentage point.

In a note to fans posted on Lincoln’s myspace page (myspace.com/reecelincoln) he wrote “Thank you to all our supporters, your incredible, and we know that all of you voted and voted for this small-town band until your wrists were sore.”

Lincoln will be performing on Thursday, July 19th, at the Corner Tavern in West Milton. He will also be performing Next Friday, July 27th, at the Versailles Summer Concert.

A recent myspace bulletin posted by the organizers of the Dayton Music Festival states that this year’s line-up will be finalized next week, and that “if you are in a band and want to submit please do it soon.”

Bands who want to be apart of the third annual Dayton Music Festival on October 6th should go to www.Daytonmusicfest.com and upload a song and bio.

New Dayton band Area Code to play the Pearl

Dayton rock band Area Code may be only 10 shows old, but the four guys that pluck the strings and hold the sticks are nothing new to Dayton music.

“We have one crazy family tree. I think combined we have played in 25 to 30 bands over the years,” said Area Code guitarist/singer Kyle.

Dating back to Stonehenge and Unhenged, the “crazy” lineage includes Busted Lovers, Magnolia Bolthead, Funky G, Chris McCoy Band, and the long time Dayton indie-favs Montgomery Greene.

But these rock veterans, Kyle, Marc, Adam, and Forrest, have a new approach and a new attitude towards writing and being in a band.

“In Montgomery Greene we had a lot of freedom in what we wrote and played, but people seem to like bands with a specific sound and that is what we want to accomplish with Area Code,” Kyle explained.

The solidified Area Code sound brings together the best of Pavement, Spoon, and the Talking Heads in a warm collision of indie, pop, and new-wave.

“We want to marry newer sounds with older new-wave. We are way more focused in what we want to do with this project,” Kyle said.

Before the band had ever performed they went to SLS studios in Dayton and recorded a 6-song self-titled e.p. that is currently for sale.

Pick up your copy of the new Area Code e.p. on Thursday, July 19th, at the Pearl when the band takes the stage along with Eat Sugar from Cincinnati. The show begins at 10 pm and the music will be accompanied by a local art show.

To hear a sample of Area Code’s music and to get more info about the show visit the band on the space at myspace.com/areacodedayton.

The lost Mink interview

Nearly two weeks ago I was in the middle of typing out a great interview I had done with former (current) Mink front-man Morgan Taylor when my computer crashed and the saga of saving it began.

Unsuccessfully I tried to resuscitate my failed hard drive, but eventually I had to come to grips with losing all my data including Taylor’s interview.

But now, with a brand new hard drive and a few less tears, I am up, running, and posting again. I wanted to begin writing where I left off; Taylor’s interview.

This interview was suppose to run the week of Taylor’s return to Dayton from New York. Back on June 30th Taylor was reuniting with the guys in Mink for their second re-union show at Canal Street Tavern and first show since December. On July 1st Taylor’s kid-friendly indie rock band Gustafer Yellowgold performed an all-ages afternoon set also at Canal Street Tavern.

KN - This is the second Mink reunion show, does that mean I can assume that your getting back together?

MT - Let’s just say were having trouble staying apart, and that yea their may be more Mink to come.

KN - What do you mean by more?

MT - We realized recently that we had a lot of Mink songs that we had never recorded and so we have studio time set aside next week (July 2nd) and we are going to start recording a new Mink record.

KN - Wow, that is big news. Will the record just be old songs?

MT - Half will be older unrecorded songs and half will be brand new Mink songs that we wrote last time I was in Dayton. We like to work fast so hopefully the record will get done next week and we can release it around Christmas.

KN - Your also in town with Gustafer Yellowgold, your band for kids?

MT - Well, we call it regular music that is kid friendly. It is pop-rock with a movie screen with giant animation cartoons that move in sync with the music. It is for kid audiences, but we also have a crossover indie audience. We have opened for Wilco and others. I never thought our reach would be so brood and wide with Gustafer.

KN - Do you like playing to kids or adults better?

MT - I get asked this a lot and it’s funny because kids never come to shows by themselves. Our music is not just kids stuff. It is not a show where kids just flop around and act crazy. I always say it is a thought-provoking kids show and that we are the antidote to the flopping. Many parents have thanked us for that.

A recent post on Mink’s myspace page (myspace.com/minkdaytonohio) confirmed that the recording was going well, and that it felt like taking a “trip in a time machine.”
