Wake Up Mordecai to make second Poptek release

Johnny Callon is the voice, guitar, and kazoo behind local duo Wake Up Mordecai. He writes intelligently quirky songs that are so catchy you need a sweater. Oh, and did I mention he is 18 years old.

On Saturday Callon will release his second CD on Dayton-based record label Poptek records. The CD is called Too Young For the Disco.

I pulled some strings down at Poptek and scored an early copy of the disc. Too Young For the Disco is 9-poptastic-songs with strong melodies and imagery. Callon smartly uses the disco, girl scout cookies, cowboys, and indians as metaphors for heartbreak and starting over.

I caught up with Callon as he finished his last day of High School. He told me he was excited to finally sleep in. We also discussed his new LP.

“I wrote all the songs last year,” said Callon. “I wanted to think this record out a little more than last time, so the recording took a long time. I spent most of April and May in my bedroom with a mic, but I am really happy with it.”

Wake Up Mordecai will officially release the new EP at the Dayton Dirt Collective on Saturday, May 25th. Also playing is fellow Poptek band XL427, Towhee, and Jesse Remnant.

“I am very excited about the show. It is a great set of bands and I may bring cookies,” said Callon.

Callon, who often dresses up and paints his face with war-paint for his shows, is up to something else for Saturday.

“We do have something planned, but I can’t tell you. Ok, one hint, Spandex,” he added.
