Hospital Garden say “Goodbye Dayton, Hello Chicago”

Hospital Garden is moving to Chicago. Their final Dayton-based show is this Saturday, August 1st, at the South Park Tavern.

In a myspace.com note to some of their fans the band called Saturday’s show a “good-bye party.” They added “we really hope you can make it out. It will be the last time we will see you for a while!”

The popular Dayton indie-rockers have spent the last year charming fans in the Gem City.

In that short time they had become an important part of the Dayton Music Community.

The move to Chicago is sudden and leaves many fans, and myself, devoid of one of our top favorite local bands.

Hospital Garden’s ‘good-bye show’ is being put on by my friends at the Buddha Den and will also feature the Turkish Delights and Electric Banana.

In a post about the show the Buddha Den wrote, “Hospital Garden’s scheduled departure to Chicago this fall saddens us greatly, but we’re very excited for their future. Saturday we will say goodbye with a very special show at South Park Tavern.”

The band’s self-titled 2008 EP is one of my I-Pod most played. I really dig them and will miss seeing them around town.

For those who never had a chance to see Hospital Garden, the band writes loud rock songs with indie-pop cleverness. Check them out here.

I am positive they will succeed in the windy city.

Good Luck guys and girl.

Show of the Week and month: the Bellbrook Jamboree

The vigilantes in the GCR Music Group are at it again.

The group of concert promoters and musicians who founded the Dayton Music Festival and the Bellbrook Jamboree are gearing up for the second annual Bellbrook Jamboree to happen this Saturday, July 18th, at the Bellbrook Canoe Rental.

This year the folk, bluegrass, indie and camping festival will be scaled back from last year’s three day festival held at the Greene County Fairgrounds.

However, this year’s Jamboree is shaping up to be a major summer music event.

The Bellbrook Jamboree will begin at 6 pm and will include 8 local and national acts.

Appearing onstage will be Mt. Pleasant String Band, Smug Brothers, Magnolia Mountain, Moon High, Wes Tirey, Jordan Hull, The 1984 NFL Draft, and Rock Island Plow Co.

Many in the local music community are most excited about the highly anticipated debut performance from local indie-rock band the Smug Brothers. The band, who features ex-members of Guided By Voices, Swearing at Motorists, and Montgomery Greene, will be performing for the first time. Despite not playing a show the band has garnered a lot of buzz through the release of a series of free digital EP’s from Fictionband.com and their recent announcement that they have joined up with Squid’s Eye Records.

Other local must-sees include folk singer/songwriter Wes Tirey, singer/songwriter Jordan Hull, and the 1984 NFL Draft featuring veteran Dayton indie-folk icon Joe Anderl.

The price of admission to the festival also allows you to camp overnight. There will be Beer, Pop, and snacks for sale throughout the night.

Not everyone is as excited about the Jamboree as I am, however.

It was reported earlier this week that the Bellbrook City Council is upset that the Jamboree is happening this weekend.

The mayor of Bellbrook, Mary Graves, said she did not know about the Festival until earlier this week. She said “that Jamboree organizers did not discuss their plans with the city,” and that she worried about traffic, noise and alcohol issues at the site.

Thankfully for the mayor the entire festival will be held in Surgarcreek Township and not Bellbrook city.

Jamboree organizer Dan Clayton told me that concert planners took all the necessary steps set forth by Surgarcreek Township officials to hold the concert. This even included gathering signatures from surrounding neighbors that live within 400 ft. of the campground.

The Bellbrook police did promise to respond to all complaints against the festival.

So still clap, just clap quieter.

Can I make a suggestion. Lets call next year’s Jamboree the “Not in Bellbrook so kiss my ass Jamboree.”

It has a nice ring to it, right?

Visit www.bellbrookjamboree.com for ticket info and directions.

The Story Changes post new tracks, ready new record

My rock n’ roll friends in the Story Changes have posted two new songs from their upcoming split LP entitled Analogies.

Due out August 4th on Destination Records, the split album will feature tracks from Dayton’s the Story Changes and Arizona’s Let Go.

The two bands have been friends and touring partners for a long time and call the album “more of a shared release than a split.”

Both bands worked with producer Jamie Woolford (Punchline / Gin Blossoms) who mixed the songs together for a consistent sound and feel. Analogies foregoes the normal approach to a split release by alternating between band from start to finish to make for a unique listen.

The new posted tracks from the Story Changes are catchy and energetic rock songs that pick up right where their 2007 album The Way of the Dinosaur left off.

To hear the tunes visit the band on myspace. To pre-order the disc visit here.

The band is currently on tour. Singer/guitarist Mark McMillon just Twittered that they are “driving west on the 74 towards Iowa listening to the Gaslight Anthem.”

Cherry Lee’s Grand Opening Shindig this Saturday

I love it when bands get together to support a good cause in community. That is why Saturday, July 11th I will be at the C{Space (20 N. Jefferson st.) for Cherry Lee’s Grand Opening Shindig.

Cherry Lee’s is a new hair salon opening later this month at 2712 Linden Ave in Dayton. It is also the longtime dream of owner and premiere stylist Cassandra Barker.

Barker, who was formerly a stylists at Square 1, is now opening her own salon without the help of loans or grants. She is the single mother of three who left the hair biz for the past few years to raise her kids. Through saving and hard work she is ready open Cherry Lee’s.

“She (Barker) has worked very hard on this and put all of her own money, blood, sweat and tears into it,” said show organizer and associate Brandy Voiles. “All of the bands playing this show are doing so for free out of the goodness of their rock & roll hearts to help get the word out about the salon.”

Set to play is Akillis Greene, Gem City Saints, Fairy Tale Suicide, Reggie Stone, Freak the Mighty (KY), and J. Marinelli (KY).

Show starts at 5 pm. Daddy Kats Kustom Kulture will have a booth along with other vendors. Also raffles will take place all night.

As for the salon: Cherry Lee’s will provide a full range of hair services for dudes and ladies, as well as massage therapy.  The salon will even feature a lounge where patrons can kick back and enjoy a beverage while they wait.

“It’s all rock-a-billy themed, and it looks like the shiny, sparkly love child of a soda shop and a tattoo parlor,” said Voiles.
