<title>Oxymoronatron say they&apos;re &quot;in it to win it&quot;</title>

Not to take too much credit, but I may have provoked local robot-punk rockers Oxymoronatron to enter the Dayton Band Playoffs again this Summer.

Not soon after my last post about the DBP at Canal Street Tavern, where I posed a call to Oxymoronatron and other established Dayton Bands to enter the Playoffs, I received an email from Oxymoronatron accepting my dare.

&amp;#8220;We accept your challenge,&amp;#8221; wrote MC Woodchuck of Oxy. &amp;#8220;We are doing the DBP for one reason and that is to win the whole thing,&amp;#8221; he exclaimed.

The band, who reached the semi-finals in last year&amp;#8217;s Summer long band competition, will again bring their over-the-top stage show and music to the Canal Street stage.

Last year I had predicted that they would end up victorious in the end, and this year I might again throw my support behind Oxymoronatron and their fight against the &amp;#8220;Evil, Mad Robots.&amp;#8221;

However, looking at the upcoming shows I am a bit worried by another diverse and talented field in the Dayton Band Playoffs &amp;#8216;09.

Here is the DBP dates. Remember the fans pick the winner. How democratic, and just in time for the Fourth.

Visit www.canalstreettavern.com for more info.

7/1/09 Sawed Off vs. Good English vs. Kelly Campbell

7/2/09 Major Major vs. Pronounced vs. David Story

7/8/09 Abi Cook and Friends vs. A Familiar Encounter vs. Cashed

7/9/09 Oxymoronatron vs. Good Sir Con Artist

The last Bellbrook Jamboree and GCR sponsored bluegrass/folk monthly showcase (or at least the last one before the big show in July) is at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s on Saturday, June 27th.

The 2nd annual Bellbrook Jamboree is July 18th at the Bellbrook Canoe rental along the Little Miami River.

Year two of the Bellbrook Jamboree will be slightly scaled back from year one, but the lineup of bands is still very solid.

Music starts at 6pm and run till it stops.

Mark your calendars.  July 18th.

Two weeks ago Dayton indie-pop band the Smug Brothers posted their 6th and final Fortune Rumors EP at Fictionband. All 6 EP&amp;#8217;s can be downloaded at Fictionband for free.

The band will be releasing a full-length version of Fortune Rumors on Squid&amp;#8217;s Eye records in August. The band is also set to release a single for the song Interior Magnets. The single will feature three unreleased tracks from the band.

To celebrate the big Smug Brothers news the Buddha Den music blog is hosting a Fortune Rumors listening party at the South Park Tavern on Saturday, June 27th.

Fans can hear the new LP and (hopefully) snag a copy of the Interior Magnets single.

Performing at the party will be the Motel Beds and Captain of Industry.

(Rumor is the Motel Beds are in the process of recording, and may have some free discs to hand out at the show as well.)

The Smug Brothers will not be playing on Saturday, but the band is set to perform at the 2nd annual Bellbrook Jamboree on July 18th.

Yea, Enon&amp;#8217;s playing Gilly&amp;#8217;s on Saturday, June 20th. I&amp;#8217;m a fan and I think the show will be a great show. Especially with Squid&amp;#8217;s Eye records bands Astro Fang and Human Reunion opening. Also opening is one of my favorite songwriters in town and member of the band Captain of Industry, Nathan Peters.

Fun show, I&amp;#8217;m sure. But, it is not the only show happening in Dayton this weekend. (To read more about the Enon show visit www.ActiveDayton.com to read Don Thrasher&amp;#8217;s article. Also read a great exclusive interview with the band posted at the Buddha Den.)

Three other big shows are on my radar for Saturday.

Mouth of the Architect is at Peach&amp;#8217;s Saturday. The Translation Loss Records band is art-core at it&amp;#8217;s best. The band has spent most of &amp;#8216;09 writing their follow-up to last year&amp;#8217;s release named Quietly. They are in Columbus on Friday and then in Yellow Springs on Saturday.
Also Saturday is a rare show from my friends in Vows. The old fashioned heavy rock 4-piece features ex-Shadyside, ex-When Sparks Fly, and ex-Shazbot members. The Vows show at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s Saturday is sure to be fun with Nightbeast and Electric Banana also playing.
Never forget to catch a local performance from Jesse Remnant. He is playing at Canal Street Tavern on Saturday. I caught him at the Dayton Dirt Collective last month with Wake Up Mordecai. Jesse, along with his backing band the Trainwrecks (featuring my fav Dayton drummer Dan Stahl) put on a really great show. They play infectious indie-folk-pop that is at times downtrodden in mood, but always pretty sounding.

I&amp;#8217;m such a fan I follow Jesse on Twitter. On June 6th he had a dream he was &amp;#8220;dating Liz Lemon.&amp;#8221; I too have had that dream.

This weekend is &amp;#8216;not much more than awesome&amp;#8217; on many fronts in Dayton music.

Of course, the &amp;#8216;Not Much More then Awesome&amp;#8217; festival at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s on Saturday, June 13th, will be awesome. The doors open at 3 pm and music will begin after 5 pm. There will be two stages with alternating performances so the music will never stop.

Here is the schedule:

5:25 p.m. Amusiac (main stage), 6 p.m. David Payne (stage one), 6:30 p.m. Your Best Friend (main stage), 7:05 p.m. Brandon Hawk (stage one), 7:35 p.m. Hospital Garden (main stage), 8:10 p.m. Kris N. (stage one), 8:40 p.m. A Voice Like Rhetoric (main stage), 9:15 p.m. Mascot (stage one), 9:30 p.m. The 1984 NFL Draft (main stage),10:05 p.m. Outside Residential (stage one), 10:35 p.m. Melty Melty (main stage),11:20 p.m. The Story Changes (main stage), Midnight Orange Willard (main stage)

Also Awesome is the two shows at Canal Street Tavern this weekend.

Saturday will be the return of the Asylum Street Spankers to Canal Street Tavern. The Austin, Texas based band combines ragtime, jazz, folk, and rock with fun and a wide variety of acoustic instruments. The band, who usually visits Dayton for Thanksgiving weekend, is making a rare Summer-time stop in the area. Visit http://asylumstreetspankers.com for more info, videos, and tunes.

On Sunday the one and only Reverend Horton Heat will make his annual stop at Canal Street Tavern. The national rock-a-billy icon is a favorite of mine and always a great show. The Reverend has dedicated this tour, like his last, to collecting money for Nothing But Nets, a organization that provides mosquito nets to people who need them in Africa. //www.reverendhortonheat.com/

The Father of Psychobilly has a heart.

Note to all Dayton area bands who want a chance at some extra local exposure. Sign up and play the Canal Street Tavern Dayton Band Playoffs 2009.

Registration forms can be downloaded at www.canalstreettavern.com. Fill it out, review the rules, and return it to Canal Street Tavern at 308 E. First St.

The Dayton Band Playoffs is a Summer-long showcase and competition for area bands looking to reach a new audience and network with other aspiring artists.

Only a maximum of 48 bands will be admitted into the DBP. So be prompt if your band wants in.

In recent years the playoffs have been a catapult for bands on the rise. The exposure that playing the DBP gives a band is unmatched by any other area music event.

However, I want to remind everyone that the Playoffs are not just for new bands to gain experience and exposure. More established Dayton bands can also reach a new audience and rejuvenate their fanbase.

I really like it when established bands perform in the DBP, and I do not think I am alone.

Take robot-rock veterans Oxymoronatron for example. They made it all the way to the semi-finals last Summer only to lose to the young piano-pop-duo Joose Box.

Maybe Oxymoronatron will try again this year. What do you say guys?

I was very disappointed to find out today that Dayton noise rock band Romance of Young Tigers is disbanding.

In a myspace.com blog posted today the band wrote that this Saturday&amp;#8217;s show at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s will be their last.

&amp;#8220;Our band has disbanded. Saturday, May 30th, will be our last show. Thanks to all who cared,&amp;#8221; posted Romance of Young Tigers.

This comes as a bit of a surprise because earlier this week the band posted that they were &amp;#8220;not breaking up,&amp;#8221; and that some of the band was just &amp;#8220;moving away.&amp;#8221;  They even left open the possibility to &amp;#8220;come back in October to play the Dayton Music Fest.&amp;#8221;

ROYT was also planning to release a new full-length in the Fall that would have been followed by a European tour.

The Romance of Young Tigers last show is this Saturday, May 30th, at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s with Early Day Miners (Secretly Canadian Records) and Footbinder.

If you have never seen ROYT I recommend you catch them Saturday.

Their music is not for the faint at heart or the close minded. It is layered with walls of feedback and mood-altering noises. Fans of experimental and forward thinking music will dig it.

The first time I saw them was at a sweaty basement show in Troy. They opened for Sparrows Swarm and Sing and I had never seen anything like it. I am a big fan.

I think the band will leave a void in the Dayton music community. Good luck guys.

Dayton singer/songwriter Joe Anderl has met a lot of people, bands, and friends over his life as a musician.

In an effort to bring some of those bands together Anderl has organized a music festival on June 13th at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s.

&amp;#8220;There are too many bands that I owe shows and want to play,&amp;#8221; said Anderl.  &amp;#8220;There were more bands I wanted to include, but the show is shaping up to be great.&amp;#8221;

The festival will be called the &amp;#8216;Not Much More Than Awesome Festival&amp;#8217; and will include two stages with bands and singer/songwriters alternating performances.

The line-up of bands (in no particular order) will be: The Story Changes, Orange Willard, Hospital Garden, A Voice like Rhetoric (PA), Melty Melty (Columbus), The 1984 NFL Draft, You&amp;#8217;re Best Friend (MI), A Musiac, Mascot, Brandon Hawk, and David Mackey.

Anderl, who fronts the 1984 NFL Draft, will also be performing June 6th at Lobsterfest in Athens, Ohio with Matador records Jay Reatard.

Check in with www.myspace.com/joeanderl for more updates on the &amp;#8216;Not Much More Than Awesome Festival&amp;#8217; and to stream songs from the 1984 NFL Draft.

Including the soon to be official city song Dayton, Ohio.

The story of Brainiac is one of the most tragic stories in independent rock history.

12 years ago today, May 23rd, Brainiac front-man Tim Taylor was killed in a car accident driving home from a late night at the studio.

The tragedy ended the promising career of one of the most important, influential, and groundbreaking bands to come out of Dayton.

The band was in the process of recording their fourth album and was about to sign a major label deal with Dreamworks in 1997 when Taylor&amp;#8217;s young life was suddenly cut short.

The electro-punk rockers, who were famous for the insanity of their live performance, had spent two summers on Lollapalooza and put out three records including the 1995 Touch and Go release Hissing Prigs In Static Couture.

More importantly the band was quickly becoming the &amp;#8220;most exciting outfit of the post-grunge era,&amp;#8221; according to All Music Guide magazine.

Guitarist John Schmersal has since began the successful electro-pop band Enon, but there will never be another Brainiac.

Dave Doughman of famed Dayton band Swearing at Motorists posted a blog on his myspace today honoring Tim Taylor. (www.myspace.com/swearingatmotorists)

The blog reads: &amp;#8220;I cannot believe it has been 12 years since Timmy&amp;#8217;s death on May 23, 1997. Swearing At Motorists would not exist if not for Timmy&amp;#8217;s moral support.

Brainiac are the greatest band to ever come from Dayton, Ohio, and in my opinion were the greatest live band i have ever witnessed. the early shows were 25 minutes of insane musical bliss, like a train coming off the tracks.

Their records were groundbreaking, their music was unlike anything else being released at the time, and still sounds fresh and exciting today.

If you have never heard Brainiac, or it has just been awhile since you gave them a listen, please spend some time today with a Brainiac record or mp3.&amp;#8221;

Earlier this year an archive of Brianiac live material was discovered by local Brainiac superfan, Bryan Seitz. Seitz spent countless hours searching out lost Brainiac footage. He has created the Brainiac Live Archive Page displaying his findings. Among these is a rare John Peel Session from 1995.

Also visit the Brainiac fan page at www.myspace.com/brainiacfanpage to hear a sample selection of songs from the band.

Johnny Callon is the voice, guitar, and kazoo behind local duo Wake Up Mordecai. He writes intelligently quirky songs that are so catchy you need a sweater. Oh, and did I mention he is 18 years old.

On Saturday Callon will release his second CD on Dayton-based record label Poptek records. The CD is called Too Young For the Disco.

I pulled some strings down at Poptek and scored an early copy of the disc. Too Young For the Disco is 9-poptastic-songs with strong melodies and imagery. Callon smartly uses the disco, girl scout cookies, cowboys, and indians as metaphors for heartbreak and starting over.

I caught up with Callon as he finished his last day of High School. He told me he was excited to finally sleep in. We also discussed his new LP.

&amp;#8220;I wrote all the songs last year,&amp;#8221; said Callon.  &amp;#8220;I wanted to think this record out a little more than last time, so the recording took a long time.  I spent most of April and May in my bedroom with a mic, but I am really happy with it.&amp;#8221;

Wake Up Mordecai will officially release the new EP at the Dayton Dirt Collective on Saturday, May 25th. Also playing is fellow Poptek band XL427, Towhee, and Jesse Remnant.

&amp;#8220;I am very excited about the show. It is a great set of bands and I may bring cookies,&amp;#8221; said Callon.

Callon, who often dresses up and paints his face with war-paint for his shows, is up to something else for Saturday.

&amp;#8220;We do have something planned, but I can&amp;#8217;t tell you. Ok, one hint, Spandex,&amp;#8221; he added.

Visit www.poptek.com to hear and download Wake Up Mordecai tunes new and old.

<title>Show of the Week: Rock-a-billy Prom at the DDC</title>

In May of last year the Dayton Dirt Collective opened their all-ages show space at 144 E. Third St. (across from the Library).

The space was opened under the idea that art and music could be shared in a friendly and respectful environment where any and all were permitted to take part.

Now a year later, I think it is safe to say the DDC community is flourishing.

&amp;#8220;We have shows about 4 nights a week comprised of local bands and touring bands,&amp;#8221; said Special Events Coordinator at the DDC Shelly Hulce.

&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s amazing how many touring bands come find us. The word about this unique venue is on the grid and we are meeting some really exciting people and fans from all over the US. Some of them redirect their tours to come play here,&amp;#8221; Hulce continued.

Hulce, who is also known as the official &amp;#8216;Gladgirl&amp;#8217;, has organized a Rock-a-Billy Prom set to happen Friday, May 8th, at the DDC from 7 - 11. Performing will be Akillis Green, Brian Hoeflich and the All Nighters, and The Rebel Set.

&amp;#8220;I wanted to put together something more than a rock show and being prom season I thought a prom or some kind of dance would be fun,&amp;#8221; said Hulce.

Hulce expressed her reasons for putting together the Rock-a-Billy Prom to Don Thrasher on ActiveDayton.com.  She said, &amp;#8220;like any genre of music there&amp;#8217;s a whole style built around it, the Rockabilly style is more than good music &amp;#8212; it&amp;#8217;s hot cars, good looking girls, fashion, sytlin&amp;#8217; guys with pompadours and sideburns &amp;#8212; you name it. And because it&amp;#8217;s kind of a wholesome genre, it&amp;#8217;s a little more accessible to everyone.&amp;#8221;

I mean how could I not make the Rock-a-Billy Prom my show of the week. I already have a date.

However, I would like to add a list of other must see shows this weekend. My new friend PJ, a faithful follower of this silly blog, asked if I could list more of the &amp;#8220;good&amp;#8221; shows going on.

So here is an attempt at that. Feel free to list shows in the comments that I happen to miss.

Friday, May 8th: Richard Smith/ Julie Adams at Canal Street Tavern, Reece Lincoln/Josh Pilot Band at Oregon Express, Blue Moon Revue at Peach&amp;#8217;s.

Saturday, May 9th: My Latex Brain/ The Professors at Canal Street Tavern, Paper Airplane/ Jordan Hull at Oregon Express, The Turkish Delights/ Thee Pistol Whips at Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s

Sunday, May 10th: State School/Towhee at Pacchia. Tantric/ Small Town Sleeper/Orange Willard at Atmosphere.

Dayton hard rockers Orange Willard will share stage-time with Platinum-selling rock group Tantric on Sunday, May 10th, at Atmosphere in Centerville.

The band, who was voted as the &amp;#8220;best unsigned grunge band in Ohio&amp;#8221; on Myspace.com, will add Tantric to a long list of big name bands that Orange Willard has performed with. This list also includes Sponge and July for Kings.

&amp;#8220;About two weeks ago Elite Management told us they were organizing a show with Tantric wanted to know if we could play. We, of course, said yes,&amp;#8221; said Orange Willard guitarist Charley Skira.

Also playing the show is Urbana&amp;#8217;s Small Town Sleeper.

&amp;#8220;Sunday we will not only get to open for Tantric, but we finally get to play with Small Town Sleeper again. We played a gig with them and July For Kings about four years ago and have since been trying to get another gig together,&amp;#8221; said Skira.

Other News on the Willard front: The band is scheduled to head back into the studio this month or next month to record the follow-up to their 2007 LP entitled Two Years&amp;#8217; Later.

&amp;#8220;We found an awesome studio in Nashville called Welcome to 1979, named because all of the recording equipment is from the late 70s,&amp;#8221; said Skira.

&amp;#8220;We took a trip down there about two months back and they actually let us plug in and run through two songs to see what we&amp;#8217;d be getting into. We were nothing short of blown away by the energy and atmosphere of the studio, staff and the sound they got out of us and we can&amp;#8217;t wait to get back in there,&amp;#8221; Skira added.

OW fans can also catch the band next Thursday, May 14th, at Hot Topic in the Fairfield Commons Mall. The band will unplug and perform acoustic inside the store. The show is free, all-ages, and will begin around 6:30 pm.

&amp;#8220;The Hot Topic Show will be a great chance to share our music with some new faces and for our fans and friends to see how we adapt our songs into an acoustic set,&amp;#8221; said Skira.

Visit the band on the Space at www.myspace.com/orangewillard.

Two weeks ago I gave mention to the Smug Brothers free digital EP series.

To quickly review: The Smug Brothers are a Dayton-based indie-pop band featuring Dayton rock veterans Don Thrasher (GBV, Swearing At Motorists), Kyle Melton (Montgomery Greene, Area Code), and Darryl Robbins (Peopleperson, Motel Beds). Every two weeks the band has been giving away a free digital EP consisting of 3 to 4 catchier-than-the-swine-flu pop songs. Volume 3 of the Fortune Rumors EP series was posted this week and can be downloaded here. http://fictionband08.blogspot.com

Now for the big news. Don Thrasher announced Tuesday that the band will be joining forces with local record label Squids Eye Records to release a Smug Brothers LP on vinyl and CD in August.

Squids Eye Records already has an accomplished roster of bands that includes the Sailing, Jesse Remnant, Grizzzzzy Bear, Human Reunion, and Cry Baby Genius (to name a few).

The Smug Brothers say &amp;#8220;as big fans of the label, we couldn&amp;#8217;t be happier to be part of Squids Eye.&amp;#8221;

The band, who&amp;#8217;s songs have already been featured on WOXY and WYSO, will be doing a on-air interview and acoustic performance on Wednesday (4/29/09) on 106.9 WWSU.

Tune it in.

My friends over at the Buddha Den music blog have posted part 1 and 2 of a five part interview with Kim and Kelly Deal of the Breeders.

The interview seems to be uncut and very interesting.

The band, who appeared at Shake-It records in Cincinnati on Record Store Day, talk to the Buddha Den about their new EP, Dayton, and the band&amp;#8217;s evolution.

The Buddha Den has also posted some behind-the-scenes video of the Deal sisters home-printing the covers of their new EP entitled Fate To Fatal. As well as part of the Shake-It performance.

The interview is revealing and in-depth and Buddha Den founder, Kyle Melton, should be commended.

Breeders fans need to read this interview. Kim and Kelly speak with sincerity and honesty. I think it is good to hear the passion for music and their hometown (Dayton) that the Breeders have seemed to regain.

Maybe we can lobby the band to play at the Dayton Music Fest &amp;#8216;09? Just a thought.

Here is a link to the interview. http://buddhaden.blogspot.com/
