Woodshock has been one of the largest Midwest rock concert/parties for the past twelve years. Yearly crowds have reached 10,000 wild music fans and campers.

Woodshock has hosted some of the best rock and metal acts in the industry. Past headliners include Static X, Twelve Tribes, Mushroomhead, Nonpoint, Dope, and more.

Last week organizers announced that the &amp;#8216;08 headliners will be Filter and Bobaflex making this year the biggest yet.

Woodshock 2008 is scheduled for Aug. 8th and 9th at the Zanes Shawnee Caverns in Bellefontaine, Ohio. All-ages are welcome and tickets are available through Ticketmaster or from one of the many local bands who will perform (I hear Once-ler has tickets).

It has been years since I made it out to Woodshock, but it was a great time. Very professionally done, but not corporately damaged by expensive vendors and sponsors.

Visit www.myspace.com/woodshock for more info and updates.

Rumor is that Woodshock &amp;#8216;08 still needs local bands to perform. Bands hit the space and talk to Tim.

Canal Street Tavern&amp;#8217;s Dayton Band Playoffs are in the middle of the first round of this year&amp;#8217;s competition.

In talking to fans and perusing the Playoffs I learned that the average attendee does not know the round one rules. Mainly it is important for fans to realize that in the first round there is no head-to-head winners. The top vote getters from the entire round will make round two.

Fans need to know that even if they feel their favorite band may not gain more votes than the opponent of any certain night it is still important to cast their vote because the band could make the top 24 and get to the second round.

Other important first round rules according to www.canalstreettavern.com include only one ballot per customer, each band will play one set at 50 minutes, and bands forfeit round if not ready to play at show-time.

Rounds two, three, and four bands will be required to play two sets.

This months round one DBP shows:

Wednesday, July 2nd, Soul Creature and Mustache-Twirling Villains.

Wednesday, July 9th, Six Cloves and Just About Jealous.

Thursday, July 10th, Gem City Saints and Goodfoot.

Sunday, July 13th, Mountain Screamer and Alec Delphenich Trio.

I exchanged e-mail&amp;#8217;s with Lisa Mendenhall this weekend regarding the construction progress to what used to be the Nite Owl.

Mendenhall recently purchased the long-time rock club and will re-open it under the name Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s in August.

&amp;#8220;We are working with August 8th as an opening date with a grand opening sometime after that,&amp;#8221; said Mendenhall.

She also told me that I would not believe how good the club looks after only a month of construction.

&amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;ve taken down the ceiling to expose the old rafters and taken off what seemed like a zillion layers of old flooring to get down to the original wood,&amp;#8221; described Mendenhall.  &amp;#8220;There is a new wood front that will get painted soon, then the glass can be put back in.&amp;#8221;

I can not wait to see the revamped Oregon District hot spot which was recently added as one of the host locations for the Dayton Music Fest 2008.

&amp;#8220;I spoke to Dan from the DMF and we are looking forward to being apart of the music Fest,&amp;#8221; said Mendenhall.

The Dayton Music Fest is the first weekend in October.

<title>Oxmoronatron to play Dayton Band Playoffs</title>

&amp;#8220;For many years, a group of highly advanced robots, called Mad Robots, have been secretly living on the earth, hidden underground. They have been awaiting the day their lesser-evolved cousins, modern day robots, would evolve into self-thinking machines. On that day, they would join with the Mad Robots in destroying all humans.&amp;#8221;

At least that is the worldly existence according to local sci-fi-robot-punk rockers Oxymoronatron. (to read more of the Secret Origin of Robot X5 visit the band&amp;#8217;s website www.oxymoronatron.com)

Hopefully, for the Oxy&amp;#8217;s sake, the Mad Robots will be allowed to vote in the Dayton Band Playoffs at Canal Street Tavern this summer.

The band plays their first round show in the 2008 Dayton Band Playoffs this Thursday, June 19th, at Canal Street with Fairborn hard rockers Eyeshot.

The four robot-MC&amp;#8217;s that make up Oxymoronatron are experienced Dayton musicians and have a fun and overly eccentric stage demeanor. Both of these qualities make Oxymoronatron one of the favorites to win the DBP this summer.

If you do not believe my Vegas odds-making abilities then just ask the band about their chances in the Playoffs.

&amp;#8220;We are in the playoffs to win it and we need all of our Robotic allies to come out and support us,&amp;#8221; said MC Woodchuck. &amp;#8220;Nerds Unite.&amp;#8221;

The band&amp;#8217;s live show is a multimedia experience involving visual imagery, video, gadgets, and real music playing robots. Fans can even buy parts of robots that have broken during a Oxymoronatron show.

I asked MC woodchuck why they entered the Playoffs for the first time and I go the answer I expected.

&amp;#8220;We entered the playoffs because we heard that some of the other bands were really Mad Robots in some very well done human costumes.  It is time for some Robotic Punk Rock to rule this town.&amp;#8221;

I just got confirmation from the GCR Music crew, the founders and operators of the annual Dayton Music Festival, that Robert Pollard will headline the 2008 indie-music festival.

GCR and the long-time Guided By Voices front-man have recently agreed to terms that will put Pollard on the bill.

The addition of Pollard should make this years fest the largest in its four year history.

No other bands or headliners have been announced for DMF &amp;#8216;08 which is set to happen October 4th.

Pollard released a brand new solo cd earlier this week entitled Robert Pollard is Off to Business. Hear samples of the new tracks on his website www.robertpollard.net.

Bands and fans can go to www.daytonmusicfest.com to see pics from DMF &amp;#8216;07 or to enter the DMF flyer art contest and win free tickets and cash.

I want to ask music fans in Dayton what they think about Pollard as the headliner?

Click on the comments and be heard.

I for one could not be more excited about it. Arguably the most important musician in Dayton rock history coming to play the DMF gives legitimacy to the current Dayton music community and the DMF itself.

The Canal Street Tavern Dayton Band Playoffs are the nation&amp;#8217;s longest running local band competition. Band&amp;#8217;s go head-to-head in a summer-long tournament style music event where fans vote to decide who advances.

Local piano-pop-rock group Joose Box hopes to be one of those bands who advance.

Joose Box will perform along with Medway, Ohio&amp;#8217;s Electric Smoke in round one of the DBP this Thursday, June 5th at Canal Street Tavern.

Joose Box is Eric &amp;#8220;Goose&amp;#8221; Geise on the keyboard and Josh Eckley on the drums. They are old high school friends who began JB last year with the piano at the center of the band&amp;#8217;s music.

&amp;#8220;In the beginning we started out as a guitar and drum tandem and would play a lot of college parties and local bars just jamming out,&amp;#8221; said Eckley.  &amp;#8220;But after a single jam session with the piano in early &amp;#8216;07, we fell in love with the sound and kept with it.&amp;#8221;

The band has a big sound despite being just a two-piece. They take Ben Folds piano-pop out of the stuffy and soft &amp;#8220;suburbs&amp;#8221; and allow it to rock out.

&amp;#8220;Rolling Stone magazine describes new bands with a formula and we think ours would be Ben Folds x Arctic Monkeys + a bicycle built for two = The Joose Box,&amp;#8221; said Eckley.

The band is looking forward to playing the Playoffs for the first time.

&amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;ve played at Canal Street a few times and Mick and the staff have said they like our set and seem to think we got a real good shot at doing well in the Playoffs,&amp;#8221; said Eckley.  &amp;#8220;So we just thought why not let&amp;#8217;s play.  This is a great opportunity to get our music out there.&amp;#8221;

Visit www.myspace.com/thejoosebox to hear a sample of the band&amp;#8217;s music.

Also, there are still open spots for bands who want to play and compete on the Canal Street stage. Visit www.canalstreettavern.com and print out a registration form. Fill it out and drop it by the club.

Dayton-bred pop-punk rockers the Story Changes will kick off their June tour with a local performance on Saturday, May 31st.

The band, along with After the Accident and Models, will be at the South Park Tavern (1301 Wayne Ave.) this Saturday prior to beginning a June tour out West and a August tour of the Midwest and the South.

This is a change in venue from the scheduled show that was originally slated to be held at the Nite Owl.

The band will debut a new tune at Saturday&amp;#8217;s show entitled I Remember. The new track was just recorded and will be featured on a compilation due to hit stores in July from Future Destination Records.

&amp;#8220;We just finished recording the new track,&amp;#8221; said Story Changes front-man Mark Mcmillon.  &amp;#8220;It will be on a comp called The Good Times.&amp;#8221;

The Story Changes, who were the featured band on 103.9 WXEG&amp;#8217;s local show last Sunday, are still in competition to play this Summer&amp;#8217;s Warped Tour. Fans can vote to help the band join the Warped Tour line-up at http://warpedtour.battleofthebands.com/theStoryChanges.

Other exciting news from these local rockers includes a feature on the upcoming Seaweed tribute album entitled Hours and Hours. They did a version of Seaweed&amp;#8217;s Anti-lyrical for the album that is due out in the States on June 24th.

Mcmillon had no word on when the follow-up to the band&amp;#8217;s 2007 record Way of the Dinosaur would drop, but hang tight Story Chang-&amp;#8220;ers&amp;#8221; the band is working on it.

If you miss Saturday&amp;#8217;s kick-off show then catch the Story Changes do a free all-ages show at the downtown Library on June 28th.

Attention Dayton bands, it is Dayton Band Playoff time again at Canal Street Tavern.

Registrations to perform and compete in this Summer&amp;#8217;s Dayton Band Playoffs are now being accepted.

Visit www.canalstreettavern.com and print out an entry form and competition rules. Drop off the filled out form to Canal Street Tavern (308 E. First St.) and your band will be entered. For additional info call Canal Street at 937-461-9343.

The Dayton Band Playoffs is the nation&amp;#8217;s longest running local band competition.

In recent years the playoffs have been a catapult for bands on the rise. The exposure that playing the DBP gives a band is unmatched by any other area music event.

2006 champion, Orange Willard, used the success and promotional value of winning the playoffs to land a record deal with Aztek Records.

2005&amp;#8217;s Playoff champ, Mona, gained considerable acclaim from their DBP last to first win. The buzz for them was not only local, but national. They have since released a cd, moved to Nashville, and signed with an agent. Labels are calling.

Last year&amp;#8217;s champ the Audible Influence just wrapped up recording their debut cd earlier this month and are set for a big release show later this Summer.

These are just a few recent examples of 25 plus years of Dayton Band Playoff success stories.

Sorry conspiracy theorists, there is no cover up, just fact checking.

Earlier this week I posted a blog entitled &amp;#8216;Theft and dismay as Nite Owl becomes Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s&amp;#8217;. I then took down the blog as I learned more about the incident.

Through various posts from bands on Myspace.com I had learned that theft and vandalism had occurred at the Oregon District club formerly known as the Nite Owl last weekend.

It was relayed that this had occurred during renovations to the club by new owner Lisa Mendenhall as she and her husband inspired to update the venue for it&amp;#8217;s reopening as Blind Bob&amp;#8217;s.

Previously it was thought that the bands who rented practice spaces above the club had equipment and supplies come up missing.

I have learned through communication with Mendenhall that the only property that had been taken or vandalized was equipment that she and the club owned.

It was also believed that she had ordered the demolition of the practice spaces and had exposed the now stolen equipment.

It is now known that the contractor hired by Mendenhall, James Kent, was responsible for the &amp;#8220;axing&amp;#8221; down of the practice space doors that had begun the stream of chaotic rumors.

Mendenhall wants bands to know they are welcomed at her club with open arms.

&amp;#8220;I understand the bands dismay but they need to understand our point also. If they want to continue to play there then they need to work with us, not against us,&amp;#8221; said Mendenhall.

&amp;#8220;We have tried to make it clear that there would still be local bands booked for shows, just in a much nicer space with a stage located where people can actually see the bands,&amp;#8221; she said.

I drove by the club a few days ago and peaked inside. From what I could see through the settling dust convinced me that the club would look completely different when it is reopened.

The Nite Owl&amp;#8217;s booking agent Mary Kathryn announced through myspace.com bulletin that the long running Dayton rock hot spot is now officially closed.

She wrote simply that, &amp;#8220;the Nite Owl is officially closed and I am really sad about it.&amp;#8221;

She is not the only one who is sad about it.

The Nite Owl&amp;#8217;s myspace page is filled with comments from local bands and fans sending condolences.

The club&amp;#8217;s posted schedule lists bookings all the way until the end of June. All of these shows will be cancelled.

The local rock group HQAX was the first to write fans about the cancellation of their May 30th show that was scheduled at the Nite Owl.

&amp;#8220;Our show for May 30th has been canceled due to the Nite Owl closing its doors,&amp;#8221; wrote HQAX.

&amp;#8220;The new owners apparently don&amp;#8217;t want to keep the already scheduled shows booked,&amp;#8221; they added.

Not that the new owners need to honor the club&amp;#8217;s previous bookings, but visit www.myspace.com/theniteowldayton and check out the list of all the great shows you will not have a chance to see.

The next addition of the Bellbrook Jamboree blog preview series is with the local bluegrass band the Wild Breed Boys.

Natives of Springfield, the Wild Breed Boys mix a banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and stand-up bass to get a traditional and old-time bluegrass sound.

Yet, as evident by the long list of fan testimonials on the band&amp;#8217;s website, the Wild Breed Boys have put a modern and energetic twist on tradition.

The band, who is becoming very well-known among the bluegrass festival circuit, has played throughout the midwest including West Virginia, Kentucky, Cincinnati, and Columbus.

The Wild Breed Boys have 44 dates scheduled thus far in 2008, and their calendar continues to be filled.

But the band, for the moment, is most excited about playing this weekend&amp;#8217;s Bellbrook Jamboree at the Greene County fairgrounds.

&amp;#8220;We are very excited to both be going to the Jamboree as well as performing,&amp;#8221; said Brett Parsons (banjo, vocals).

&amp;#8220;There are many great acts and we&amp;#8217;re honored to be picking with them all weekend. We can&amp;#8217;t wait for some backstage impromptu jam sessions,&amp;#8221; he added.

The band will also perform live on 91.3 WYSO this Thursday, May 15th, at 12:30 pm.

They are scheduled to hit the Jamboree stage Saturday, May 17th, at 3 pm at the Greene County Fairgrounds.

For ticket information and Bellbrook Jamboree schedule visit www.bellbrookjamboree.com.

A few months ago I had the opportunity to witness WYSO dj Rev Cool in action.

I sat in the studio while he hosted his Friday night radio show on 91.3 WYSO called Around the Fringe.

I saw the professionalism of his craft from the other side of the speaker and determined that the reverend of cool lives up to his legacy.

We talked off the air about how he helps in the community including efforts to get inner city kids to learn to read. He also told me a unforgettable childhood story about how he met Earl Averill who is most famous for ending the career of Dizzy Dean.

However, my fondest memory of Rev Cool is seeing his inner party animal come out at the first Dayton Music Fest. He was going club to club doing rousing band introductions surrounded by the Gem City Roller Girls and hundreds of his fans.

His inner party animal will come to life again this Friday, May 16th, from 8pm - midnight when he hosts a massive dance party at Playthink Learning Studios (411 E. 5th st.).

Rev Cool will be broadcasting live playing music and interviewing on the air some of, what he calls, the &amp;#8220;movers and shakers&amp;#8221; in town.

&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m trying something completely refreshing and new with this live broadcast&amp;#8221;, says Rev. Cool. &amp;#8220;Not only will I be doing my regular selection of high energy beats from around the world but at the live performance there will be a crew of drummers and other musicians to create the Rev. Cool Temple Drummers and Arkestra.&amp;#8221;

The dance party will conclude the Urban Nights celebration in downtown Dayton on Friday.

Visit www.wyso.org and check out the playlists from past Around the Fringe shows.

Wes Tirey, who is best known for being the front-man of the local and successful indie-folk-rock band the Bull and the Bear, is making waves around town as a solo artist.

It has been over a year since the disbanding of the Bull and the Bear and now the folk and experimental singer/songwriter Wes Tirey has a new record and a spot on the upcoming Bellbrook Jamboree Festival.

&amp;#8220;Before I played with The Bull and The Bear I played solo, so solo gigs are really nothing new for me,&amp;#8221; said Tirey.  &amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s sort of like going back to my roots.&amp;#8221;

Tirey&amp;#8217;s new cd, entitled Ohio and Other Sad Things, will be released May 16th when he plays the first annual bluegrass and americana festival the Bellbrook Jamboree.

&amp;#8220;I recorded the album about a year ago with Patrick Himes (Captain of Industry). Seth Graham from Romance of Young Tigers did the artwork for it,&amp;#8221; said Tirey.

The Bellbrook Jamboree is May 16-18 at the Greene County Fairgrounds.

Tirey is one of the few local artists playing the festival which also features such national acts as The Dan Tyminski Band, Josh Ritter, Dry Branch Fire Squad, King Wilkie, and The Farewell Drifters.

&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s really an honor to be able to share the stage with so many great artists,&amp;#8221; said Tirey.  &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m a fan of Josh Ritter, so opening for him is a big opportunity and I&amp;#8217;m sure it will be a surreal experience.&amp;#8221;

Tirey&amp;#8217;s performance at the Jamboree will include guest appearances by Will Leasure and Gabe Mitchell from his old band the Bull and the Bear. Seth from Romance of Young Tigers is also planning a guest spot.

Maybe with a little persuasion we can get Wes, Will, and Gabe to break out an old song or two.

Visit www.myspace.com/westirey to hear tracks from his new record.

A certain member of the local media (Dayton City Paper) called local music blogs &amp;#8220;swanky&amp;#8221; in a recent review of the noise-rock band Romance of Young Tigers.

It was also written that these &amp;#8220;swanky&amp;#8221; blogs overlook bands like Romance of Young Tigers and quote &amp;#8220;swoon&amp;#8221; over other Dayton bands.

Swanky? Maybe, but in a polyester suit, gold teeth, and leopard print sorta way.

However, I have written about Romance for over two years including a piece reviewing their performance at the Dayton Music Fest in 2006.

You can call me swanky, just don&amp;#8217;t call me late for dinner.

Anderl&amp;#8217;s taking a break:

I ran into Joe Anderl celebrating Record Store Day at Gem City Records. He told me that he was going to be taking time off from shows after June.

I pleaded for the Dayton singer/songwriter to change his mind, but he explained that he wanted to finish recording songs he wrote prior to his 2007 cd entitled I Love Joe Anderl.

Good luck with the record Joe, and I watched the movie Once upon your recommendation and I loved it.

Wild and Free change name:

Wild and Free is now to be known as the Judy Blooms.

I love the new name of this talented Dayton indie-rock band.

I am sure the real Judy Blume, teen writer and author of Superfudge and Frecklejuice, is smiling somewhere.

As for the band, they are currently in New York with scheduled shows this week in the Big Apple.

Just three more weekends until the first ever Bellbrook Jamboree.

The Jamboree will be May 16th, 17th, 18th at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia. It is a weekend of camping and music featuring national and regional Bluegrass and Americana artists.

The line-up includes such national performers as The Dan Tyminski Band, Josh Ritter, Dry Branch Fire Squad, King Wilkie, and The Farewell Drifters. Also local performers like the Wild Breed Boys and Wes Tirey will perform.

In preparation for the first event of it&amp;#8217;s kind, I will begin a series posts introducing the bands who are playing. Stay Tuned.

Visit www.bellbrookjamboree.com for tickets and more info.

The other big May first will be the first ever &amp;#8216;Rock for RAINN&amp;#8217; concert.
