Wright making Savage look smart

Cornerback Eric Wright continues to make General Manager Phil Savage look like a genius.

Savage traded up in the 2007 draft to select Wright in the second round out of UNLV, where he had transferred from Southern Cal following a rape allegation and some other legal trouble.

Wright, who has been a model citizen with the Browns from all reports, today was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week, mainly for the 94-yard interception return for a touchdown that sealed Monday’s 35-14 win over the unbeaten Super Bowl-champion New York Giants.

With the Browns leading 27-14 and the Giants driving in the fourth quarter, Wright picked off Eli Manning, eluded the quarterback down the sideline and danced into the end zone like Deion Sanders as Cleveland Browns Stadium rocked like seldom before.

The interception return was the fourth-longest in club history. It was Wright’s third pick this season. He also had three solo tackles and two passes defensed.

Through five games, Wright ranks third on the team with 25 tackles (21 solo), indicating he does not shy away from contact.
