What about Billick if Cowher says no?
Win one for Romeo? Yeah, right
With friends/players like these, Romeo Crennel doesn’t need any enemies.
Not to say the Browns laid down on the job or that they intentionally didn’t play hard in Sunday’s awful 14-0 loss to the woeful Bengals, but you couldn’t blame anybody for thinking that way in light of that dismal performance in their home finale.
So they’re going to finish 4-12 after the Steelers get through with them Sunday and then owner Randy Lerner will huddle with his trusted advisers, Jim Brown and the rest, and figure out what to do next.
I think he’ll end up keeping General Manager Phil Savage in place, dumping Crennel and hiring one of the out-of-work coaches as opposed to a rising coordinator/assistant or college coach.
My bet is that the new coach won’t be Marty Schottenheimer or Bill Cowher, but Brian Billick, the former Baltimore Ravens coach with a Super Bowl win on his record and, presumably, the desire to get back in the game after spending some time in the Fox broadcast booth.
Expect to see Jim Fassel pop up, too, as a candidate. He’s also had some success in the league, taking the New York Giants to the Super Bowl the year the Ravens beat them.
Savage knows Billick from their days in Baltimore, so it makes sense on that level. And at least you would have a head coach with a history of NFL winning as opposed to throwing darts at current assistants hoping to hit on the next Mike Smith or John Harbaugh.
Billick interviewed to become the Browns’ first head coach when they came back into the league, but he really wasn’t interested because he suspected what would happen, that the team would win about five games those first two seasons (which the Browns did) and that the head coach (who turned out to be Chris Palmer) would be fired (which he was) by panicky management.
After a year away, Billick likely is motivated to return and, assuming Brady Quinn lives up to his billing eventually, he’ll have a quarterback, the lack of which was his undoing in Baltimore.
It just seems like Billick would be an easier sell than some anonymous assistant, especially if Cowher lands elsewhere or can’t be convinced to rescue this sinking ship.

Yeah, just what the Browns need. A former “offensive genius” that had a terrible offense in Baltimore. Billick is an arrogant jerk that failed as a head coach. His Super Bowl win was because of a great defense that he had nothing to do with. If the Browns want to keep losing, then yeah, hire Billick.By Matt

If they bring that pompous jerk in to be the leader of this broken franchise, I will not watch them anymore. NO WAY can they make that decision. He is the exact opposite of the type of leader this team needs. Jerk.By jack

i dontn favor billick at all. browns were not good enough for him b4 why use him now? I like marty but that doesnt seem likely and i dont think even lerner has pockets deep enough for cowher. besides i dont see cowher chosing to play against steelers 2 times a year. Just give us a coach with gonads who can impose some discipline on a team that appears without any control.By AP-FLORIDA

How dumb is that. Brian Billick was an offensive genius with Daunte Culpepper, Robert Smith and Randy Moss. But when he coached a team with no offensive talent he stunk. And whoever takes the Browns job will be coaching a team with no offensive talent.By Rob

I’d like to have Cowher more than anyone, but if he decides to keep his job at cbs (making 2 million a year) then we have to look at Billick. Rumor has it that if Billick comes back he’ll bring Mike Nolan with him. I’d take Nolan as a def coordinator in a heart beat. I know, i know, Billick is an egotistical jerk, but I want to win next year. Fassel wouldnt be bad but he’s lobbied for the Oakland job publicly. Well, let’s just cross our fingers for the best!! Oh, and cut Shaun Smith..By Tonyboy

This is amazing. Before you were complaining that Romeo was TOO nice. Now you don’t want Billick? He obviously is not a nice guy, but he will expect the players to show up and play.By Dave

Billick is an idiot! Please don’t even think about him for the Browns. He’s an egomaniac who can’t coach his way out of a paper bag, let alone take over a struggling team with no defense. Get Cowher, if available … if not, go with one of the up and coming young coordinators … Browns aren’t going anywhere in 2009 anyway, so a young gun would have a season to establish himself.By bobs

Somewhat indifferent to Billick. Dont really want him, but could do worse. Cowher will be looking for 6-7 million a year…thats a number that Lerner can handle. I would not worry about money with Lerner.By JTinSD

Uh, nice piece of “journalism.” You think Billick makes sense because he and Savage know each other? It’s been well-documented that they disliked each other immensely in Baltimore. How about picking up the phone and trying to come up with some legit info, rather than just speculating? The only way Billick gets hired is if Savage gets fired first.By Fed Up

There is no magic solution to the Browns debacle. Management obviously doesn’t care about the fans nor do they know how to hire, or maybe not want to pay for a coach who actually knows the game well enough at Pro level. You can have all the talent in the world on the roster but end up with a coach like RC who can’t figure out how to make a team out of that talent. That’s like having a 6 pack but not having the plastic thingy that holds it together while you carry it home. I will always be a fan but I absolutely refuse to buy anymore tickets or club apparel/gear until the organization can prove they want to win football games.By sick of it all

CAN WE PLEASE CHANGE THE NAME OF THIS STUPID TEAM. WTF IS A BROWN?!?!!? At least change the name to the Dawgs or something, show the world how well Clevelanders spell. I think we should call them the Cleveland Bombers, or something, anything but the Browns. The name is as sad as the city, and as sad as the team. Bill Cowher or Marty Shottenheimer. Forget about Brian Billick, don’t even ask him for the job. It wasn’t good enough for when he interviewed when the team was new.. forget him!! He’s no good anyway. I think we can bring back Shottenheimer. Just accept it Cleveland, the Browns are never going to win. Especially why the are named the ‘Browns’ Just give up hope and accept Shottenheimer. Bill Cowher is clearly the best choice. He could bring rivalry back to the AFC North. The Browns are purely pathetic, and may always will be. The year the Browns draft a good running back in the first round will be the year Jim Brown is no longer with the team and they changed their name to ‘Winners’ or something with a name that sounds like a winner. Not some loser name like the Browns.. aahhhh feels good to be out of Cleveland.By Not a brown

am thinking, if the Browns want to go for another championship, they should hire someone as a coach which name has ‘Brown’ in it. like Paul Brown when he consistently brought this team to be winner. maybe we can just appoint Jim Brown to be a coach, not just adviser. wut do u think?By quantoid

Savage needs to be held accountable for his behavior and needs to go as well. One’s name slapped on a web page for good deeds is not enough to claim “good guy” status to make up for arrogant remarks and poor decisions for the team. Bottom line is that Savage should get the boot.
