Don Carey deserves your attention
He’s smart and he will hit you.
If you’re looking for reasons to believe in sixth-round draft choice Don Carey, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound cornerback from Norfolk State, these are two of the better ones.
Such is the description Carey’s position coach in college, Marco Butler, gave in a recent interview, and we really have nothing else to go on at this point, of course.
“The biggest thing is, he’s always in the middle of the play,” Butler said. “He doesn’t shy away.”
Of course, what’s the kid’s coach going to say? That his tackling role model is Deion Sanders? That he can’t cover an aging sportswriter?
Everything at this time of year needs to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. Still, if you’re looking to get excited about the back half of the draft as training camp draws near, stuff like this serves a purpose.
Smart? Carey, who signed his contract this week along with the two other sixth-round picks, apparently could have gone to Yale if he had the money. And he’s “very knowledgeable about the game,” Butler said. “Always trying to pick up little things. There are guys in the NFL who don’t do that as well.”
Carey started at Norfolk State as a 160-pound free safety, then played cornerback and was used as a nickel back the past two years.
He’s raw, a work in progress, but the Browns always seem to be searching high and low for defensive backs, so he’ll get an opportunity to show what he can do, especially because he was drafted and the team has something invested in him.
He’ll be worth following when training camp opens next week.
