Browns sign Bengals castoff
Eric Ghiaciuc, whose performance as a starting center was eventually deemed unacceptable by the Cincinnati Bengals, signed today as a free agent with the Browns.
Ghiaciuc figures to compete for a backup spot. He was originally drafted by the Bengals in the fourth round (119th overall) in 2005 and started 42 games at center for Cincinnati.
He started at least 12 games in each of his final three seasons with Cincinnati, including all 16 in 2008. However, he was often overpowered at the line of scrimmage and the Bengals decided they needed somebody bigger and more physical to anchor their line.
Ghiaciuc became an unrestricted free agent after the 2008 season, and when the Bengals decided not to sign him, he went to training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs, who waived him in September. He had a brief stint on San Diego’s 53-man roster in December.
