Tressel: QB job up for grabs

Todd Boeckman or Terrelle Pryor?

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel didn’t announce any change on the depth chart at quarterback during the Big Ten weekly teleconference Tuesday, but he did say both players will compete this week to determine how the playing time will be divvied up for the Troy game Saturday.

“The nice thing is we have three good practices this week, and we’ll have a nice, healthy competition,” Tressel said. “I think Terrelle has shown he has an unusual moxie about him. He didn’t seem to be out of place in that (Southern Cal) football game. He didn’t seem to be in his first game. He seemed to have good presence about him.

“Obviously, the first thing Todd will tell you is that he can’t throw the ball to the other team (with interceptions) — especially if the other team is as good as the one we just played.

“How much playing time happens from here on out will be based in large part on how practice goes and then in large part on how we’re doing on Saturday.”

Tressel also said Chris “Beanie” Wells hasn’t tried to cut on his injured foot since late last week. The star running back will test it rigorously today and be evaluated after that.

The USC game didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know. OSU has a patsy schedule every year as evidenced by the championship game the past two years. The Big 10 is weak!

YSU, OU and now Troy. Troy? Wouldn’t Centerville play them? What the hell is wrong with Buckeye football? Just look at the schedule. JT is all about getting cheap wins. $3,500,000 a year for what?

I think it is time to look at the offensive line coach and defensive coordinator positions. The offensive line is a sieve and the defense needs to be more creative. Overall, the team is way too predictable in its play calling. There are few surprises and you cannot win against good teams when they know what you are going to do on each play.

Well Boxter, you should start to complain about LSU, because they play the same Troy team November 15th.

BUCKEYE FAN, I agree with you. To me though it wasnt about Xs and Os and i keep saying it that game was about the mentality USC went out there and punked OSU. The Defense is too soft. James Lauranitius makes takles six yards down the field if you watch USC LBs they attack they are Head Hunters. Our LBs and really Defense as a whole is Soft and it starts with the coach. I keep saying this time after time Malcolm Jenkins is the only one that has that dog mentality. Coach Tress needs too look at himself and realize when it comes to football you cant be nice you dog the other team cuz they are sure gonna dog you they dont go for Field Goals its all about TDs ask USC.

I agree with the comment ref the o-line & defense. 4 & 5 year o-linemen can’t do anything with the defense. What conditioning improvements have they achieved in 4-5 years? Not just strength & weight numbers, their speed killed us. The defense looked like 9 for us & 12 for them. Same as Florida & LSU in the last two big games. YOU, Mr Defensive Coordinator, need a new scheme & it is not in the box you are playing with now! Come on, Bucks, I still love ya!!!!

Yeah it sure does stink winning 10 games every year and going to BCS games every year. Oh yeah and winning a national title against arguably one of the greatest teams of all time. Also stink beating Ok St and a loaded Notre Dame. (Caution sarcasm detected. Mark my words this loss to USC will be the best thing to happen to Tressel. This is the wake up call he needed. We are heading to a spread offense with pryor. Plus if Beanie is back next year we will be able to lineup and smack people. Tressel is learning look at our recent recruits, speed speed speed. Tne Big Ten will bounce back all you SEC fans need to calm down. NCAA football is cyclical and everyone comes back to the earth eventually, conferences included. Some would argue the Big 12 is actually better this year. But you can have your time in the sun. Nobody is going to beat USC anyways. At least we had the guts to schedule them for two years, West Virginia for two, Miami for two and Tennessee.

In a nut shell are def. and off. lines suck. Alex boone might be the WORST lineman in collage football. Why would you double down on a DEF. tackle and let a end come full bore at your QB’s back side????? Also are def. has sucked and has not been able to make adjustments when the need to since 2002 when after we won a National title he left to take a head couching job at UC and is now at Michigan state. WE need a new def coach and a good one when we start to look.

Boeckman, the once “touted” Heisman Tropy candidate, winning 10 games until the BCS championship game, is grossly “over-rated”. OSU has always had better success with a running quarterback, its the added dimension needed in college football. Boeckman has a hard time with defensive reads, takes too long to make up his mind, and I personally think, he knows he has Pryor breathing down his neck. That can’t help his concentration either. Pryor’s passing will come with time, we all know this, but his running game keeps defenses guessing. And the way Tressel runs his “relic offense”, we need all the surprises we can get.

Before I hit on the QB situation there are a couple of things I want my the Buckeye nation to hear. Has anyone esle noticed how other top teams offensive lines perform? I watched Florida, LSU, know I’ve seen USC. I witness there O-linemen use quickness and there athletic abilities to block EFFECTIVELY on the line and down field. Opening up enormous holes for RB’s. Giving QB’s (Sanchez) crazy time to pick apart predictable defensive plays. Also, Big Ten schools are known for these giant, slow lineman with no athletic abilities. This also speaks volumes about our pathetic defensive line. It’s not just the QB situation thats killing us! All the skilled positions suck besides Bennie and Prior. Know I’m hearing Tressel taking about splitting times. Coach, Beckman was gray shirted for a reason. He can win against low level teams (the Big Ten….sad to say). But outside of our confrence be is horrible!!!! Yes, Prior is a true Freshmen and has a lot of learning to due. The thing is we have a better chance to win with him. The team is fired up when he comes in. Politics aside, the players want to say it but the don’t want to hurt Beckmens feelings. People, the class we just brought in ranks amonst the best in the nation for a reason. Some of the true freshmen are far more skilled than Robo or hrtline. You don’t even hear those clowns names during games. when they go against a GOOD defenses BD the are an after thought. One more time Buckeye nation, Posey, Lamaar, are on a diiferent level than the current recievers. Put them in with Prior Beenie and watch defenses learn to respect us again. Before that can happen, we need to stop being so freakin predictable. Sanchez I quite,”We felt like we seen there sceme a thousand times in practice.” People I’m not crazy! This is real stuff and I wish that the coaches would take in what I’m say along with the true Buckeye fans who know whats going on. Does anyone see things different than me?????

Sitting Boeckman and playing Pryor would be a slap in the face to all of college football fans. D-Line as soft as OSU will make any quarterback look bad. The kid from St. Henry deserves to play and stay in the spotlight to secure his drafting position into the pro’s. With the soft scedule OSU is facing they won’t lose another game for the season. Don’t put a freshman in his place when any average quarterback would succeed, just to show change due to a loss to a team you couldn’t have beaten with Peyton Manning at the helm. The offensive scheme is so predictable it all comes down to who is stronger and faster. “This is what were doing, I dare you to stop me” Boeckman doesn’t put the game plan together. Pryor will end up getting hurt if you let him run wild, then where do you go? If JT is the class act everyone claims him to be, don’t mess it up for Todd.

They played like little girls.we did have a few bad calls… like always out there .. the review was wrong… he did step out of bounds.. they fix the game the way they want them…got to..a touch down call back.. for holding.. every time we got in the red zone holding flag.. usc got calls when it never matter at all..we alway had 3rd and 25.. but bottom line we looked like sh.. and so were the calls we got in frist half….

Hey Simon. You actually have the nerve to mention LSU? Or for that, to mention anyone from the SEC? When was the last time OSU beat a SEC team? Hell, when was the last time OSU beat USC? Give it up Simon…you got nothing. The Bucks suck.

Hate to tell you Dave, but JT wants to win ballgames. If he begins starting TP now, he’ll have the brains and brawn to go into next year a powerhouse. It never hurts to look ahead. Tressel has “class” in knowing he wants to win for the school. Believe it or not, they can still make it to a BCS game, probably not the championship, but a bowl game none the less. JT’s $3.5 million contract, with added incentives built in to get to a BCS game, will actually determine whom the better QB is. Hate to tell you, but he’s not worried about Boeckmans draft status, if Boeckman performs, he plays. If he doesn’t, he rides the bench. Pretty much cut and dried. Oh yeah, forgot: The offensive line could use alot of work too.

Thank you to ohiosfinest (1:27), Jeff (11:55), Dave (1:42), and Rick (7:58). I may not agree with everything you have to say, but at least thought before you typed. Too many times on too many forums, too many Buckeye fans talk crap or say things that simply don’t make sense. I don’t think many quarterbacks could have performed too well, given the o-line’s problem. Once USC brought their DE’s out and they contained better, Pryor was neutralized on his runs. However, he carries himself in a way that not many do. Todd probably can run the offense better, just because of the experience he has. However; you can coach a running quarterback to dink and dunk. You can’t coach a pocket quarterback to run a 4.3/40. In any case, JT is the man. His winning percentage is ridiculous. There may be something said about the big games, but the big games have seem to be lost at the lines more than anywhere else. The beauty of America is that you can express your views without (much) retribution; no matter how uninformed they may be, so I do respect everyone’s opinions. I just like it when I see thought in a post. I think JT is the man and I would not change too much. I’m not the coach, although I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and that makes my opinion the best and most trustworthy…by far.

Finally, Tressel heared my cries all the way from Ft.Hoood, Texas! Not only did he insert TP, he also changed the o-line which has played like garbage since the Illinios game. Brewster & Stugart got some serious time in. Iam not sure abought Adams though. I will not put all of the blame on JT. The senior are on my hot list!!! My question on them is are they underchievers or were they overachieveres? some of them maybe to busy thinking about playing for them selves(sunday). Whatever the case maybe they are not showing the leadership you would expect from a team with so much experience. Anyways, tonight I’m going to pray that JT guides this team and opens things up at a pace they can handle. TP is used to zone read, spread offenses. started using more of his strengths and and both cordinators need to try some new things.

To the realist buckeye fans I wanted to also bring up recruiting. The term “in the trenches,” is a big deal to me. Our last class was rank by some as high as number #4 in the country. Thats great right? of course but have you really looked at the class?? There was only one DT in our class who was a four star(possible impact) player. Let me first say I hate the south and the SEC like most northerners. The thing is I’ve noticed that they have some serious beast on there Offensive and Defensive lines. They are athletic, strong, and fast. Folks, do you remember that 2002 championship team? Against the great Miami, our defenive line controlled that game from the first to last snap. I mean that team was on the level(if not better in my opinion) than the USC team that crushed us on national TV.That team was less talented by far as far as skill position, but the lines were up to the challenge. We will only continue to get abused until this matter is no longer an issue. We are going into Florida and stealing RB, CB, and a few diamond in the rough athletes. We need to open up our options through out the south(speedvile) and get those monsters in the chrenches that champions always seem to have. You don’t think I’m right on this one? USC and the SEC will change your mind if you watch sportscenter tonight. Or just watch to see who plays in Miami.
