Saturday was loss on field, win in recruiting

Good note from Rivals.com football recruiting editor Jeremy Crabtree on the importance of last weekend to Ohio State. Not just against Penn State, but in recruiting:

Almost all of Ohio State’s 2009 commitments were there, and another top-flight recruit was on hand for his official visit. Rivals100 defensive tackle Corey Adams from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro said he enjoyed his time in Columbus despite the Buckeyes’ loss.
“The game was incredible,” Adams said. “Obviously it could have turned out better for Ohio State, but it was exciting and I really got into it. After watching Ohio State’s defense, I think I could fit in really well with them.”

Other recruits in Ohio Stadium included:

  • Offensive lineman Marcus Hall of Cleveland Glenville

  • Linebacker Jamel Turner of Youngstown (Ohio) Ursuline

  • Linebacker Jordan Hicks of Lakota West.

The Buckeyes already have a strong group of commitments for the Class of 2009, but it never hurts to have more. Despite the loss, the atmosphere of Ohio Stadium and the promising young players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, could help sway recruits.

Of course, not everyone was blown away with the play on the field.

After watching the Buckeyes up close again, Hall said he definitely would be able to compete for early playing time.

Hope none of them were planning on staying till they are seniors. They saw how Tressel gave up on the season after the USC loss. Just prepping Pryor for next year. Biggest Big 10 game they had this year and he didn’t even put Boekman in to get 8-9 men out of the box and let Wells have a shot. Hope he didn’t have any receiver recruits on the fence or they’re gone. Hell he should have put all the freshman in and just started over.

Its so exciting for the team to be bringing in many skill players to complement our future qb’s ability. I hope the upperclassmen will embrace faster, hungrier recruits pushing them for playing time and not folding causing dissention like this year’s bunch. If we are going to remain the USC of the midwest we need depth at all skill positions..

Lil Wayne (and your favorite team is? Year after year we never got the blue chippers until about the last 3 years. By the way we still havent had the top recruiting class most of the time we are top 10. Oh and so sad that we lost 2 this year and oh darn we are going to be 10-2 with an 18 year old phenom and probably in yet again another BCS game, what a shame. it sure does stink winning a national title in 2003, fiesta bowls, playing in national title games even though we lost a couple and probably playing in the Rose Bowl. I always wondered what it felt like to be a Yankees fan, when everyone is jealous of you even when you lose. Its actually a really good feeling

Perhaps if Tressel would have opened the game up sooner in the 2nd half, instead of playing kill the clock, we may have done more. But, penalties did not help either. He needs to let the guys do their thing, after all, isn;t that why they were recruited?

Killing the clock was a good idea. Problem was the fumble on 3rd and 1 on the 50. After the fumble the ball traveled 20 yards in PSU favor leaving them on the 30 and they eventually scored. Not fumbling the ball would have AT LEAST pinned PSU inside their own 20 and probably wouldn’t have put up a TD. That was where this went wrong. Tressel runs a power offense and that entails killing the clock when you’re ahead. This was PSU not Miami OH, PSU has a high powered offense and you just can’t give them time to work with.

So when was the last time in a game someone passed for 200+ yards and not one touchdown was scored? How about the comment pryor made “if i’m not moving the ball down the field, take me out coach”…didn’t really see the ball being moved to much saturday night…when is that change going to take effect?

Buck Fan 08 Common, 6-3 is not a lead to stand on with 12:30 to go when you start the drive and you can’t run the ball. Running for first downs is a great way to kill the clock. OSU couldn’t do it consistantly. They couldn’t move the ball or the score wouldn’t be 6-3. After the 1st half they should have brought Boeckman in and got the guys off the line. Pryor may be a great QB in yrs to come but Sat. he was shut down and Tressel knew it but used the game as a training seccesion for Pryor. Pryor loss the fumble due to handling the ball carelessly, the interseption was desperation and most QBs would have thrown that ball. I don’t blame Pryor, Tressel put him and the team in that position. I don’t know why so many people have drunk the sweater veste coolaide, but he’s not one of the top ten coaches in the country. Coaching for the largest university will make a lot of guys look good.

you guys have had blue chippers since john cooper started he had a knack for recruiting thugs that could play football but were dumber than a box of rocks your national championship game in 2003 was a gift from the refs

Lil Wayne…why are you so negative about your home team. Go get a letter from your mailbox and read your address then tell us why you root against yourself.

OSU is an embarrassment to the State of Ohio. First of all, a head coach shouldn’t wear a sweater vest and clap like a wimp. He is the reincarnated Mr. Rogers. However, I must say. Us folks down here in SEC area love OSU. OSU is 0-9 against the SEC. OSU fans are Kool-Aid drinkers and are delusional if they think OSU is any good. Watch the SEC. Speed, speed, speed, 2-3 deep on the depth chart at every position. Class of 2010 there are 250 Div 1A players alone coming out of just 3 counties in south Florida. Article was in Rivals.com yesterday. Seriously people, we in the south love the folks inthe State of Ohio. But leave the football to the folks in the south. It’s a religion down here. You can’t compete with that talent.

The hate for the Buckeye State Football is amazing. Aside from all this chit chat. Let knowledge be the answer. The Ohio State University has tradition as 1 of the top winningest football programs in history, high ranks for overall National Champioships, A constant NFL feeder school and let’s not forget why the National Football Hall of Fame is in the State of OHIO!! Because “OHIO is the home of Football.” Ask any NFL Hall of Famer.

I agree. Weren’t we supposed to be super this year with all these guys coming back? It’s starting to look like Earl Bruce is once again coaching from behind the Buckeye Trees. It looks TRessel’s years at baby colleges is starting to show again now that he has run out of real ideas.

Expectation is a powerful drug. As Buckeye’s 12th man, let’s remember the past 5 years: 3 national championship game appearances, 4 overall BCS bowl appearances, 2 consecutive outright Big Ten championships, AND it’s been over 1800 days now since “the team up north” has beaten us. I can’t think of a single program that would trade their track record for ours. That includes all the amazingly arrogant and self-aggrandizing SEC fans. Quick quiz for example: since 1930, let’s pick Georgia… how many national titles have OSU won, and how many have the “mighty” dawgs (the should teach spelling in the southeast) won. Give up? OSU = 15, the ‘dawgs’ = 1. One. Point being, sure the SEC has had 15 minutes of fame recently, but they’re already beginning to fade back into the pack. Meanwhile, The Buckeyes continue to make its university, alumni, fans and all residents, current and former, of the Buckeye state proud to wear/and bleed Scarlet and Gray!!! O-H….!!!1

The issue with this year is slow linemen. We need quickness.

I have been watching the SEC & Florida seems to be the only team with speed in the conference. Wanna talk about speed I’m thinkin Posey, Flash Thomas, & the kid coming in from Michigan running a 4.31 in the forty. Thats speed, now putting them in position to make plays is coaching..
