RichRod gets plenty of advice from UM fans

Just got off the Big Ten teleconference, which led off with Jim Tressel and had Rich Rodriguez batting second. (That’s probably how things will play out at Saturday at Ohio Stadium, too.)

No good bulletin-board material, but Rodriguez — Michigan’s rookie coach who has taken plenty of heat for his team’s dreary 3-8 record — did show a pulse when he was asked if he’s been coached-up on the rivalry he’s about to dive into.

“Yeah, I’ve had about 480,000 alumni coaching me up,” Rodriguez said. “If I’m on vacation or wherever, if I see a Michigan fan they’ll say, ‘Good luck — and beat Ohio State.’ “

A stat thrown out by one of the writers on the conference call: The past six Michigan coaches have won in their first try against Ohio State.

That streak is likely to end. The Wolverines are three-touchdown underdogs — a shocking line. Rodriguez faces the tough job of trying to honor the rivalry while not making too big a deal out of the game, should his team get thumped.

“Our players should feel the intensity, but I think our focus when the game starts should be on the next play,” he said. “That’s going to be my talk to them today.”

THE PRYOR QUESTION: It was mentioned to Rodriguez that OSU freshman QB Terrelle Pryor had his dad call the new Michigan coach to turn down a scholarship offer earlier this year.

Rodriguez did not offer up any specifics as to how that went down, only saying, “You like to get that last call (before a player commits). We had a good relationship in the recruiting process and got to know him well, and obviously he’s doing some remarkable things for the Buckeyes this fall.”

DID YOU KNOW: Michigan defensive coordinator Scott Shafer is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace. The Painesville, Ohio, native played quarterback for B-W. Jim Tressel also played at Baldwin-Wallace. He was an all-conference QB in 1974.

Bucks: 432 scUM: -17 I see Beanie rushing for about 834 yards and Pryor throwing for 965 and 37 TDs. It’ll be close in the first quarter, but Tress will open it up, much to the delight of the 105,000 inside the Horseshoe

Man OSU better blow this team out. I say 55-9 OSU, but since Tressel is coaching, then it will be 30-15. Tressel needs to be fired. He is not that good of a coach. Buckeye fans are dillusional and won’t see that he is not as good as an Urban Meyer or Mike Leech or Nick Saban. He is too conservative and has lost 2 straight national championships that was not even close. c’mon wake up people!!!

hey james how’s about a nice tall glass of STFU. Coach Tressell is the best thing to happen to this squad since Woody Hayes… You like all them other coaches so much go root for them.! We’ll get back to the BCS Championship game in due time and the next time we go we will succeed! Go Bucks!!!

Steve I can see you are a dillusional fan. OSU will not win another BCS championship until they stop being conservative. Too many teams has caught up to OSU. We need an innovative coach. And Tressel is not innovative. He is too conservative. Yes he is a great recruiter but he does not know how to utilize his players. How can you put all your stock into Beanie wells when you have other guys that can get it done. An example of this is when USC beat OSU and people started to say that the reason why OSU lost the game is because of the fact Wells didn’t play. Thats bull. If wells played then USC still would have won the game because of OSU doesn’t win big games and tressel’s playcalling is pathetic. Last week, Pryor only threw the ball 9 times. That won’t do it against a team like Florida or Texas who spread you out. Until people realize that beating Michigan is not the number one goal, they’ll still be dillusional about the football team. USC is my team and I like the Buckeyes but I’m just telling it like It is.

tressel is not that great of a recruiter. ohio state recruits itself.but…if they tighten up the academic standards then ohio state won’t get many more blue chippers,,and by the way what was so great about woody hayes? back in his day there were only 2 teams in the big ten and i don’t think his bowl record is all that good. woody coaching in this day and age he would only be .500

As a huge Michigan fan, I have to admit that the Wolverines have NO chance. Too much team speed and talent means that the B**ckeyes will win 56-10. However, remember 1968? *su 50-14, 1969-Michigan 24-12.

Hey James, you sound like a fairweather fan of whichever team is producing the best winner. You say your team is USC, but I wonder who your team was 10 years prior to Pete Carroll becoming the coach. Back then USC fans wouldn’t even fill 3/4 of their stadium during that run. You also talk of Urban Meyer and Nick Saben (both good coaches), each of whom got to the BCS Championship game with a one loss record. Granted they each have one BCS Championship and are both 1 for 1 in that catagory, but the last time I looked, Mr. Tressel has been to the BCS Championship 3 times twice with undefeated teams, once going 14-OH. I’ll take 1 out of 3 from Tressel any day. He may not have all the flash and is sometimes frusrtating to watch, but his record speaks for itself. So go join the fly in the pan news media bashing the Big Ten whose not up to SEC speed, and not as talented as USC because Ohio State had two bad BCS TITLE games. I wonder why the news media really never spoke much of Michigan putting a beat down on Florida in it’s bowl game last year. Hmmm Big Ten vs all that SEC speed, I’m sorry it would have proved their news worthless. And what of USC losing to Stanford (at home) in 2007 and Oregon State in 2008 with all that talent? Tell USC to go back to playing Notre Dame the very last game of the season as they did for the first 30 years of that rivalry. Oh yea, they can’t compete in the cold. I’m sure that would speak volumes in the SEC as well. And James, we really don’t care if you like the Buckeyes, because it is evident you are not a Buckeye. GO BUCKEYES, BEAT Mich-again!

Tressel NOT a good coach. You are an idiot….plain as that. The man has gotten his team to the National Championship 3 out 8 seasons. Enough said. Some OSU fans, and I mean SOME are so darn spoiled (see James).

Lost $20 on Ohio State in 1976 (Woody Era)against UCLA in the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes were 2 TD favorites going in, undefeated playing Big Ten teams.Though I am from Ohio and will want to the Buckeyes to win,I will not bet on them. James opinion is dead on. Just what I think..
