Beanie Wells heading to NFL

It didn’t take Ohio State running back Beanie Wells long to figure out where he’ll play football next season. Wells, whose career as a Buckeye was plagued by an assortment of injuries, announced today that he will declare for the NFL draft.

The officlal news release from OSU:

Prolific running back enters name in NFL draft

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two-time Ohio State MVP Chris “Beanie” Wells is entering his name into the 2009 National Football League draft, he announced this afternoon.

A statement from Wells:

“This has been a difficult decision, but in the best interest of my family, I have decided to enter my name into the 2009 National Football League draft.

“I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, my teachers and the academic advisors for all they have done, and I definitely want to thank the Buckeye fans for all their support. Ohio State has become like a family to me, and it will always be that way.

“There are a lot of things I know I will miss: just being in the locker room, spending time with my teammates, playing in the Michigan game, just all the aspects of being at Ohio State that make it such a special place. But in the best interest of my family, it’s time to move on and take a chance at fulfilling my lifetime dream of playing in the NFL.

“I will always appreciate everything Ohio State has done in helping me grow up and become a man, and I will always be a Buckeye.”

In three seasons, Wells rushed for 3,382 yards, fourth best in Ohio State history. Voted the Buckeyes’ MVP in 2007 and 2008, the Akron native had 16 career games of 100 yards or more and scored 30 career touchdowns. He set the Ohio State-Michigan game rushing record with 222 yards in 2007.

“Ohio State football will miss Beanie’s big runs, but we will also miss his big smile,” says OSU head coach Jim Tressel. “He has been a tremendous teammate and one of the all-time great performers in the greatest rivalry in college football. He will always be an ambassador for Ohio State and all of us wish him well.”

The National Football League draft will be held April 25-26, 2009, in New York City. January 15 is the deadline for players to declare their early entry into the draft.

Health is a concern but when was the last time you saw a running back man-handle safeties or take 4 tacklers another 5 yards ? Can you say Jim Brown ?

I was hoping he’d stay at Ohio State, but if I had his talent, it’d be tough for me to ignore the dollars. I wish him well in his NFL career…I hope he becomes one of the biggest stars the game has ever seen.

I wish him well in the NFL but he wont amount to much. Too ridden with injuries. Mike Hart was a beast at Michigan like Beanie is at OSU but like Hart he wont do much.

Beanie will do fine in the pros.I just don’t understand why Tressel is holding the door so wide open for him.(don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out)

Congrats Beanie. Without your passion to play we wouldn’t be Big 10 champs or for that matter even mentioned in the bcs. I wish you well, and I wish the team you leave behind has learned that they just can’t watch one man do it all…thank you and God Bless & keep you and your family.

Wells is a straightaway runner no lateral movement. When you run straight ahead in the pros with no lateral motion it spells disaster. Also, he plays in a weak conference and gets hurt way to often. If he played in the SEC you would never have heard of him.

If I was a NFL team I would question his durability. It seemed as he had problems staying healthy…missing 3 games this year and then the 2nd half of the bowl game. When healthy he can be very productive. To those who think he is overrated consider he did rush for over a 100 yds against a solid Texas run defense. Not to mention he had a 1000 yd season & missed 3 games.

He knew from day 1 he would jump to the pro’. It’s all about the bling image, not the education. He hardly attended class and they still let him play. Great institution we have in OSU. Win at all costs!!!

Thanks Beanie, I knew you were going pro in the Second half of the Texas game.

Sources have told me that Tressel signed Pryor on the promise that he would start as a freshman. Now Tressel is pursuing a blue chip running back. If he is making that same promise to this kid, there would be no room for Beanie. Maybe that’s why Tressel was encouraging him to turn pro.

Hart can’t hang with Wells? Hart’s career: 5,040 yards rushing, 5.0 average, 41 TDs. Wells’s career: 3,276 yards rushing, 5.8 average, 30 TDs. Add another year for Wells (because Hart played four), and during equal time, the stats are almost identical. Few doubt that Wells is a better pro prospect because of his speed and size, but the 5-9 Hart is probably the most driven player in the history of college football, and one of the pound-for-pound strongest. Hart ran his mouth way too much, but you’re a fool if you don’t respect a guy who gives everything he has. If Wells had Hart’s heart, he’d be unstoppable. Instead, he’s injury prone and far from tough.

Truth are you an idiot. Heart had nothing to do with his injuries. He was the emotional leader of the team and for those who say he is a straight forward runner you obviously dont pay attention to football. For his size, he is one of the best running backs I have ever seen. at 240 punds with that speed, IF he stays healthy he will be really tough!

A sister of a cousin of a guy I know said that Tressel told Boeckman that he would start all year then went to Pryor and told him he would start as a freshmen, then they all fell in love and were involved in a vicious love triangle with RichRod and Charlie Weiss. Plus Mike Hart will be NFL MVP next year cuz he’s gettin traded to the Bengals who are gonn hire Tressel and have Pete Carroll as O-Coordinator!!! Man I love football, although I have no idea what Im talking about like half the idiots on this message board!!

No one ever comments on Oklahoma losing 3 BCS title games in 6 years; 4 in the last 9 years. We just keep bashing Ohio State though the Bucks make a BCS bowl every year. I think we all have some growing up to do.

WELLS TURNS PRO,IF YOU ASK ME (AND YOU DIDNT)C .WELLS IS ABOUT TOO GET HIT ALOT HARDER THAN HE EVER DID IN COLLAGE AND SHOULD HAVE STUCK AROUND AND GOT HIS DEGRE,THAT WAY IF HE FINDS THE GOING IN THE PROS TOO MUCH HE WOULD HAVE ANOTHER YEAR OF STATISTICS AND A DEGREE ,AS GREAT A PLAYER AND PERSON HE IS ,I DONT SEE HIM DURRABLE ENOUGH FOR THE PROS

Jon: You’re a fool. Wells showed he couldn’t play through pain, or didn’t want to. Remember when he was hurt for the first time this year and acted like he’d been shot? Certainly, he ruptured his Achilles. What? He got an ouchie on his toe? Sometimes, being talented isn’t good enough. Sometimes, you have to want to be great. Too bad Wells wasted a chance to be the very best. Emotional leader of the team? Whatever. Let’s poll Buckeye fans about that one….

Like we could find one person, much less two, to hook up with Charlie Weis!
