McCain to Letterman: “I screwed up”

letterman_mccain150.jpg

John McCain made an apologetic appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, blaming nobody but himself for his much-ridiculed cancellation last month.

“I screwed up. What can I say?” the Republican presidential nominee told Letterman on Thursday night’s show. There was, however, a silver lining, said McCain.

“Look at all the conversation I gave you,” he told Letterman.

The late-night host had been skewering the Arizona senator since he missed a Sept. 24 appearance during the momentary suspension of his campaign due to the economic crisis.

Peter Cook sex tape surfaces

We hadn’t heard them, but apparently rumors have been long circulating about an explicit home video showing Christie Brinkley’s ex-husband Peter Cook having sex with his young office worker Diana Bianchi. Now, it seems the New York Post’s Page Six has proof. The tape is described in relatively graphic detail here.

In July, Brinkley settled her divorce with Cook, whose affair with then-18-year-old Bianchi seen as the reason the 10-year marriage imploded. He got $2.1 million of her $60 million fortune, and she won full custody of their kids. Cook, who confessed to a $3,000-a-month online porn habit, paid $300,000 to Bianchi in a legal settlement that kept her quiet.

A follow-up rumor is that Cook settled for so little because Brinkley found the pictures on his computer. Brinkley’s lawyer Robert Cohen said: “Nothing about Peter Cook’s behavior shocks us. We don’t know anything about this tape. We never saw it and we never heard about it. Christie’s concern is for the sake of her children and she hopes this video is kept private.”

Bianchi’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said she may sue Cook over the video. “We are now going to review, and begin weighing our legal options, for Diana,” he said. Cook declined to comment, but a source close to him said: “He has no knowledge that any such material exists, but it is well known that Cook and Bianchi had a consensual affair, so anything is possible.”

Anything is possible — truer words were never spoken.

Leary backs off “autism’s a joke” stance

293.leary.denis2.lc.101508.jpg

OK, he got our attention, now he wants some more. Denis Leary is looking to rescue himself from a firestorm of criticism. Enough with the puns.

In response to reports that his book, “Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid” (out Nov. 18) makes light of autism or treats it as if it were an excuse, Leary suggests reading the book first.

“If they have, they missed the sections I thought made my feelings about autism very clear: that I not only support the current rational approaches to the diagnoses and treatment of real autism but have witnessed it firsthand while watching very dear old friends raise a functioning autistic child. … The point of the chapter is not that autism doesn’t exist — it obviously does — and I have nothing but admiration and respect for parents dealing with the issue, including the ones I know.”

“The bulk of the chapter deals with grown men who are either self-diagnosing themselves with low-level offshoots of the disease or wishing they could as a way to explain their failed careers and troublesome progeny. Of course, this entire misunderstanding can be easily avoided simply by doing one thing — reading the book. Taking one or two sentences out of context — especially when it involves an entire chapter devoted to the subject — is unfair and ill-advised.

“Too often in this country, everything gets reduced to simple sound bites and very very often those sound bites are not truly representative of an author or artist’s point of view.”

To recap, all Leary wants is for you to buy the book. Simple, that.

Duchovny, Tea Leoni reveal separation

s-SPLIT-large.jpg

David Duchovny, who recently left rehab for sex addiction, and wife Tea Leoni released a statement Wednesday, Oct. 15, saying they have been separated for some time.

“In light of continuous speculation over the lives and marriage of Tea Leoni and David Duchovny, the couple has confirmed that they have in fact been separated for several months,” the statement says. “The couple had hoped to keep this separation private for the sake of their children.”

Duchovny, 48, has been married to actress Leoni since 1997. They have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.

The actor voluntarily entered rehab last summer “for the treatment of sex addiction,” he said in a statement issued in August. Earlier this month, Duchnovny had “successfully completed the rehab program,” his lawyer said. Duchovny was then spotted with Leoni at the Czech Street Festival in Manhattan.
