Should high school kids go trick-or-treating?
What do you think when you see high school kids in costume going door to door on Beggars Night?
VANESSA CLAY, West Carrollton: I think when you’re in high school, you want your driver’s license, you want to be treated like an adult, so act like an adult — and that doesn’t include going trick-or-treating.
AUDRA TOTH, Springboro: Why not? I did it at 15 or 16. As long as they’re not being obnoxious and they’re just doing it for candy.
LIEZEL ZEIGLER, West Carrollton: I think they’re too old for it. But, of course, it’s always fun.
JARON LAMAR, (age 18), Dayton: They’re having fun. I did it last year.
KRYSTLE GRUNDY, West Carrollton: I hope they’re taking their little brothers or sisters around.
PAULA MOORE, Kettering: It really doesn’t bother me, as long as they’re in costume and they’re just having a good time.

Is this story a joke? High school aged kids!?!? The word LOSER comes to mind. If my high-school aged kid tried to go trick or treating, I’d hand him a job application and tell him to pull his head out of his lazy butt. If your old enough to drive and you show up on my porch with a goodie sack, you’ll be lucky if I don’t take your candy from you and give it to a little kid!

I think that as long as they are not running over the little kids, using manners, and being respectful I have no problem with them trick or treating. It is when they are rude and running over the littler kids that I have a problem with it.

You show up at my door from 6-8 on Beggar’s Night and you get candy. I don’t care how old you are or if you’re in costume. Have a little fun with it, folks.

I think it’s fine for HS kids to Trick or Treat as long as they’re in a costume. Just going house to house in your day to day clothes wanting candy is so GREEDY!

you are never too old for candy or Halloween, so if you put on a costume and go trick-or-treating, who cares how old you are

Halloween trick-or-treating is for EVERYONE; age should not be a factor. What next…limiting Christmas and Chanukah gift giving to elementary school children only?

If you are a Teenager& come to my house, You will get candy. OK So it will be the CRAP candy that you get, BUT you will get candy. I am talking the CandyCorn or Mike and Ikes, but you will get candy. I give my best candy for the younger kids. The Resses Cup and Snickers or Mars Bars or KitKats. So make this down. One year I put a NO One Over 15. Don’t stop. It worked. When a kid that is bigger then I am, comes to my door asking for Candy. WELL.. You over 15, You get the Crap kind.

Well… Halloween is for all kids. I think we should all stop forcing our kids to grow up so darn fast. Let them have some fun. As for the posts from people who have stated the kid is a loser, well I say your a loser. These kids need to have some fun. That is what trick or treat is about. 17 or 7 does not matter. If the kids are being good and respectful we should encourage this will a little candy. Have fun this weekend kids. And if you decide to soap some windows… nail the ones who give youa job application instead of candy. Happy Halloween

I have less problems with the idea of older kids dressing up and going trick-or-treating than I do with the parents who dress up their babies (who obviously won’t be eating the candy) and bring them out, complete with sacks or pails for “the kids’ candy”.

I think it would be ok for HS to participate in halloween activites but maybe it would be better if the older kids had a night for their age and then a night for the smaller kids. Because some older kids can be very disrespectful and that take the fun from the little ones.

I agree with the person who said they have a bigger problem with the parents taking out the babies. As far as the teens, as long as they have a costume on they will get something but the kids who are like 3-13 will always get the best candy from me.

trick or treating isn’t limited anywhere by anyone. High school kids go around to hang out with friends and have fun. We just live all the years possible as a kid before we hit adulthood.

I find it funny how people talk about 16-18 yr olds as ‘kids’ yet if you call them a ‘kid’ they take offence. That age group is old enough to drive, have a job, pay bills, etc… Do they really need to go around to get free candy?

I’m all for teenagers trick-or-treating but would prefer they make an effort and show up in a costume. I know teenagers want to be thought of as adults, but they truly are still kids! So let’s let them have their fun. It won’t be long before reality kicks in, and we all know how UN-fun that can be. No matter what your age, you get candy bars at our house!

I think halloween is for everyone. I would much rather them come to each house and ask than steal my kids bag. It’s often called bag snatching. I think it allows a kid to be a kid. I was 16 and wanted to go trick or treating but I felt pressured to be “cool”. Lets not take away the innocence

Everyone always tells their children not to griw up too fast. Everyone. So why would we tell them to grow up now? If you’ve got the money to participate in passing out candy and being festive, why would you turn anyone away? Even if they are old enough to work and drive, let them be kids for this night.

I work with HS kids. Despite everything you may hear or think, the vast majority are good kids. Emphasis on kids! And they love to have fun and eat candy. Why not? They are just kids! Better this than TPing your house! And I definitely agree that the people out with babies are NOT fooling anyone! Really, who is the candy for? Yet people give them candy and coo over the toothless babies! I find them more annoying than teens. If teens are in costumes and polite, let them enjoy their youth awhile longer! Quit being Scrooges, people!

Being a kid when you’re a kid is great. That being said, I think that dressing up and going ‘begging” should end around 12.After that, stay home and hand out candy or take out a younger child.I don’t give candy to anyone in High School or not dressed in costume.

High school kids trick-or-treating? I think not. The little reprobates should be home catching up or getting ahead on school work. Plus, when these kids “dress up” it’s usually some charcoal on their face and an old army field jacket. Hardly a costume.

Free candy is free candy. Enjoy the night. High school kids are just that ….KIDS. Let them enjoy being a kid. Adult life is soon approaching them and it sucks!!

When I was a teenager I volunteered to take the little kids with me so I could go trick or treating as well. Parents cannot be in two places at once to give out treats and to go with their kids at the same time. Problem solved for them and me.

It’s abt having fun and enjoying Halloween. I enjoyed dressing up and going out up until I was 45 years old. Then my kids got a lil older and decided for me it just wasn’t kewl. Now at 51, I thought abt joining in with my grandkids. I know they would enjoy it as much as I. Never to old!

They ? should be, “Should teens be allowed to go trick or treating?” Absolutely Yes. Costumes optional. As long as their respectful, this is an evening of safe childhood fun. Let them be children for as long as they want. The negative comments are exactly what we don’t want our teens to embrace. Compared to less safe weekend options, Beggar’s Night should be open to any young person through late teens.

lets call a pig a pig - if the Kids ( under 18) and are not rude, crude and evil, who really cares people - wouldnt we all rather they be trick or treating than so many other negative things??? Let’s support them in a positive way- if this is a way to show them that we adults are always so freaking judgmental and demeaning- Remember - they already think we are outsiders, dont push them away — I have 4 kids and I want to cary this family tradition on forever, well ok - til 18 - however mine usually stop in middle school so they can stay hm and help dad with the haunted yard!!!!!

The way i look at it would rather have the teenagers out Trick or Treating then going to partys and getting drunk then driving home.Who knows how many people will get hurt or die this weekend because of it.

They should be allowed to trick or treat! I’m in high school, I have a job, and I trick or treat with my friends every year! It’s just something we do for fun, and in costume.

Why not? Adults still dress up and go out to party. As long as the high school kids put effort into their costume, it’s fine with me.

I have to say I was surprised by the comments here. I usually get the 15-18 year olds, not in costume and smoking. Figuring if you are old enough to smoke you are too old for trick or treat. But after reading all the responses maybe I’ve been a little too harsh. So this year, you come to my house and you’ll get candy. Thanks for all the opinions.

I think any age is fine for candy and Halloween! I am a mother of a little one, and we will be going out with him… we are also giving candy to everyone that is dressed up! People need to realize this is a giving thing, show these teens some love, Lord knows if they get it at home!

I think Halloween is a night for anyone to go out and have some fun. Many teens have rough lives and just want a night of fun. There’s so much pressure being a teen. Grades, parents, peers…sometimes teens need a way to forget about all that and just be a kid! And no matter what teens may say or think or do, they’re all kids at heart whether they’re willing to admit it or not. So lighten up, people, and give us kids a break!

I don’t have a problem with the older kids. My kids and I dress up in costumes and scare them, they have fun with it. We leave the little ones alone. My problem is with all the people who drive their kids in from Dayton to go Trick-or-Treating in my Kettering Neighborhood because their hood isn’t safe and we give out better candy. I almost gave her kids the Charlie Brown Treatment, Rocks all around!!
