Have Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood hijacked traditional country music?

Country music legend George Jones says singers like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood have stolen the identity of traditional country music. Do you agree?

JULIE KING

JULIE KING, Englewood: “No. I’m just a music rebel, and I like a lot of genres. For me, there’s room for traditional country music, but this is a whole new sound, and I really love it.”

NATALIE BOOMERSHINE

NATALIE BOOMERSHINE, Dayton: “Yes. They’ve made it too contemporary, too mainstream. It’s starting to blend in with music like pop and rap. That’s why it’s called country — it’s from the heart and more about telling the story.”

THONG VONGSY

THONG VONGSY, Miamisburg: “In some ways I do, but Taylor and Carrie are more pop country. George, he’s more of an old-timer to me. It’s still country, you know?”

LORI PORTER

LORI PORTER, Miami Twp.: “No, I don’t think so. If people like the traditional country singer, they can still find solo singers who do that. (Swift and Underwood) are definitely more pop country than traditional.”

GARY NOLLEY

GARY NOLLEY, Franklin Twp., Warren County: “No. I think they’re good.”

ERIK STEFFEN

ERIK STEFFEN, Miamisburg: “I’m not an educated party — not enough to answer about country music. However, if you were asking me about Weezer or Nirvana, I’d be happy to answer.”

ELIZABETH SHAHEEN

ELIZABETH SHAHEEN, Miamisburg: “Yeah, I think they’ve made it too poppy. You’ve lost the roots of what true country is.”

I like the new country but, the movement was started years ago. I understand what George Jones is saying but, like Taylor Swift said, she was an opening act for everyone up for Entertainer of the Year.

No,not really, but they do have a mroe contemporary “twang”.I very much like Carrie. She’s more place with Martina,Reba, etc. Taylor is definently more pop in my book. But, good music is good music no matter how “country” it is or not.

I really don’t care for much of the new country music. It is way to “poppy”. I love Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, and a few others. But Taylor Swift is definitly pop music, along with Carrie Underwood. There is nothing wrong with them, they just should not be considered country music. Reba, The Judds, and Alan Jackson, they are country, and I miss artists doing that type of music!!!

Maybe George is a has-been. Maybe his fans are dying off. There are different kinds of music and people purchase what they want to hear. I like Carrie and Taylor better than that old twangy country music George sang. But I like rock better.

It actually started with Faith Hill and Shania Twain and their cross-over hits.

I like traditional country and I love the new country. I think there is room for both and the new country has definitely brought in the younger generation. I say it’s great for country music.

While I think they are both good singers, if they were put in their place in music, they would not be in the country genre. Pop or crock or rock or?

I agree completely with Lori. Plus, she is one good-looking woman. She must have a nice dog at home.

Hey Ochocinco - just like everyone else on the DDN site, you can’t stay on topic too well. Child please! PS - Do you have any extra mustard for tonight’s team dinner?
