Would the downtown Arcade be a good home for the main branch of the Dayton Metro Library?
Would the downtown Arcade be a good home for the main branch of the Dayton Metro Library?
KATHIE MAHAFFY, Dayton: “I would really like to see the old Arcade come back — the shops and the restaurants. But the parking wouldn’t really accommodate the library too well.”
CIERRA JEFFERSON, Trotwood: “It’s not a bad idea. It doesn’t really make that much difference, because the library is right around the corner already.”
DALE CREECH, Washington Twp.: “I don’t think it’s a net gain, because then you end up with an empty shell two blocks away. I’d rather see it used for something new.”
TOM HILLEARY, Dayton: “It’d be nice. It’d be more convenient for people who live downtown at the Biltmore and folks who are disabled. They wouldn’t have to go all the way over to where the main branch is now. And the bus center is right there.”
LIBBY HAYES, Wilmington: “I don’t know. It’s a beautiful building, so I hope they do something with it.”
FAY LUNDY, Dayton: “Oh yeah, because it’s right downtown, and that would be convenient.”

No! The arcade has too much history of failing. It would be a shame to put the library in there and fail (again). Keep the library where it is. The Arcade has a terrible track record even though it is a nice building. The library will not keep the arcade financially sound, especially in this economy.

Why move the library? How much tax pd $$ would it cost? Archade was cool back in the 70’s but today? History since 70’s has been our tax paid dollars thrown away on project after project. Does anyone else remember when City of Dayton moved that stupid statue around? What a waste of money. I’ll never forget how our local govt has taken advantage of the taxpayers. Downtown Dayton scares me. Too many criminals down there.

There are too many thugs standing around just waiting to mess with someone. I use to go to the free concerts downtown but it became too dangerous to walk to your car. Also, some of the parking lots are run by people who are not honest. I remember looking for a sign of how much it was, and entered and found out it was too high, and they were trying to get me to pay for entering and leaving. I refused and was about to call the police when they let me go w/o paying.

The owners just want the library in their building so when they fail, they think the city will be obligated to keep pouring in money.

I guess my idea of an “arcade” with video games and other similar types of family fun entertainment is out. Gamers are everywhere and young and old. Everyone is always squalking about getting people downtown. Draw from the other downtown events and Riverscape. Or just forget it and go on like before.

Have the developers provided structural information to the library that verifies the suitability of the structure for this use?

NO I would not like to see the Library there. Parking is horrible for that area. I would love to see it become a place where family could come maybe a COSI, or a showplace for students art work. But we need a walk way that would go across/above the street to make it easier for family during the cold and wet weather. Maybe have entertainment on weekends. I would love to see DT become what Cincy or Indy has.
