Should people be entitled to own any pet they want?

Gov. Ted Strickland says he will ban the sale or possession of exotic animals such as bears, monkeys and crocodiles in Ohio. Should people be entitled to own any pet they want?

RASHAN LEGARD, Kettering: “If you have a stable home, a license and no bad history, and you put up warning signs to ‘Beware,’ I think it should be OK.”

JOSEPH LINE

JOSEPH LINE, Dayton: “I agree with the ban. I wouldn’t want to live next door to something like that. It’s unfair to the neighbors. I’ve got three children, and I’m protective of my children.”

JON GUZIK

JON GUZIK, Beavercreek: “People should be able to have any pet they want as long as they keep it under wraps and follow any rules and regulations. If they were licensed, the state could keep track of them. That would be the best idea.”

KAREN SKINNER

KAREN SKINNER, Riverside: “I would say ban exotic animals. They’re dangerous. They need to be in their natural habitat.”

TIM SLAUENWHITE, Bellbrook: “People have a right to do what they want, as long as it doesn’t harm or endanger anyone else. If they don’t have the means to take care of the animal, then the state probably shouldn’t permit it. I don’t mind if the state regulates exotic animals, but only for public safety.”

NICKI TAULBEE, Huber Heights: “As long as they get them and train them, and they’re not harmful, it should be OK.”

You cannot just say people should be ableto dow hat they want if they don’t harm anyone else. But this is about protections for animals and no exotic animal should be kept as a pet. it is proven time and again that people can’t take care of animals properly and they end up dead, or confined in a cruel manner, or released into the wild habitats where they do not belong. The ban on exotics is part of the bigger deal brokered by Ohioians for Humane farms, which includes provisions against puppy mills and factory farming practices. It’s time to stop the war on animals

Good idea!! Have any pet you want!! The Everglades are now infested with the weirdo snake crowds “pet” pythons & boa’s that they let go after becoming unmanageable. The snakes are now moving into populated areas. Pets disappear, and one child was killed by a boa in Florida. Animal control agents are going nuts trapping them when they can. Alligators have been trapped/removed from ponds/lakes in Tennesee, Ohio, Illinois…”the natural habitat of these creatures” so yea…sounds like a good idea to test Darwin’s theory! As was said in The Wizard of Oz, but modified a little: “Lions & Tigers & Bears….so what?” I suggest allowing Komodo Dragons, silver back gorillas, wolves, elephants…the list to ensure freedom of having any pet you want is endless! I suggest allowing Fire Ants be imported into Ohio in ant farm containers. After they get loose, you’ll enjoy the searing hot pain from the stings. They’re not supposed to be able to endure colder weather, but just allowing them for “freedom” purposes, justifies having them infest the area. The comments here stating pro exotic animal ownership, and keeping it “under wraps”, shows the stupidity of people who already don’t have a clue as to how extensive this problem is. Yes, go ahead, tie a Tiger up in your yard as long as it’s “under wraps”. Morons.

Since most people aren’t responsible enough to care for a dog or cat, how do you propose they will be able to take care of something exotic. I just read a very disturbing story this morning of a Florida man having sex with his Great Dane. People are just wonderful creatures. It’s too bad animals and children have to depend on them.

Strickland should be working on fixing the Ohio education system, not this kind of stuff. What a tool he is - sorry I voted for him now.

I don’t think most people that have these exotic pets mistreat them at all and in fact I think these animals have a good life. Besides this point I think Strickland is correct in banning these animals as pets. Too many of these animals are now roaming free in america and they are ruining the balance in nature. These animals are not meant to be in the wild in the US and the domestic animals in many instances cannot compete with these animals for food. Look at Florida. You can hardly go into the everglades without seeing a python. “Just my opinion” is completely wrong, most people are very responsible and care for their pets very well. I wish people would stop making up facts like saying most people are irresponsible. Just because you think something does not mean its correct. Too many young people were brought up to think whatever they think is a fact, grow up its not true.

Strickland IS concentrating on creating jobs for Ohio! In this bill is a provision for the position of “Snake Handler” and “Bull Excrement Removal Specialist.” These two union positions pay $42.00/hr, with a total benefit package of $92.00 an hour. Snake bite antidote and a shovel are included in the work package. Ahhh…Strickland…always thinking of the little guy….

ok LET ME CLARIFY since the DDN missed the boat on this one. Ohioians for Humane Farms gathered over 500K signatures to submit to the Ohio attorney general, so that there would be a ballot vote in November to improve conditions of factory farmed animals. (issue two last year was a joke) Because they were armed with these petitions, the state and other groups approached OFHF and decided to nip this in the bud and pass laws to improve factory farming, crack down on puppy mills and make owning an exoctic illegal. It’s not like strickland had nothing to do and conjured this up to pass the time.

No this is just more nanny state mentality and nosey busy bodies trying to run and control everyone’s lives. If you don’t like exotics don’t have one. But stop demanding that everyone else conform to your opinion. We must be able to get abortions, but no you can’t have salt, you can’t have an exotic pet, you can’t…. Just stop with controlling people’s lives. Are there some people that are not good at taking care of their pets. Yes. But that does not mean you deny and take away from everyone else. I really don’t understand you people that want to decide how other people live.

When a neighbor loses a job or their house, sometimes they just turn their animals out to roam around the neighborhood. I would hate to think of “alligators, bears, and monkeys” running wild in the streets, but if history is any indication of what people are capable of, it could happen. I say the Governor is correct with a ban.

Leslie: it’s not about how someone lives, it’s about how they care for, house an exotic animal that doesn’t, for example, belong in our habitats.

Statistics prove that automobiles, disease, drugs, and man himself kill more people each year than exotic animals. Properly licensed facilities undergo no-notice inspections from both State and Federal agencies. These agencies are well trained in ensuring animals are properly housed and protected. Every animal on our planet, even humans and domestic dogs and cats, can be unpredictable and injure or kill. Besides, this ban is a violation of the 14th amendment. SB95 termed the puppy mill bill which is also part of the HSUS agreement calls for any/all kennels to rebuild at nearly 3 times the current cost to meet standards. Ohio Ban on Dog Auctions - Your own leader publicly stated at the Holmes County Library that her agenda was to stop all auctions in Ohio and called for a ban on Holmes county business owners then complained when no buisness in the county would let her hold her meeting. Do some research into PETA and HSUS, both organizations have publicly stated they support eco-terrorists acts. So, by this idealism, any kid that bites or punches another should be banned and the parents not allowed to breed anymore. If we are ever going to have a productive conversation about animal welfare and desirability of captivity, such dialogue will need to begin with how captivity enhances animal welfare and responsible ownership protects both humans and exotic animals.

I support bans on purchases of certain exotic animals, simply because even though I detest a “nanny state”, people have shown that in general they are incapable of properly managing many of the exotic animals they acquire, in many cases turning them loose in the wild where they do not belong, or simply abandoning them where they can be a danger to the public. However, Strickland’s executive order goes so far as to put private non-profit exotic animal rescue organizations in jeopardy. I know of one in my area that is very very concerned about Strickland’s executive order, and it may prevent them from rescuing animals. This animal sanctuary has already rescued a number of animals from a failed Pennsylvania Zoo fairly recently and has been featured in the Dayton Daily news multiple times to highlight what they do. The devil is in the details. This idea sounds good to a lot of people don’t want to see exotic animals abused or turned loose in non-native environs, but the reality is that it is over-reaching.

It is totaly crul to the animal. They belonge in the wild not in our back yard. Are we so high headed that we think we can do what ever we want just because we have minds that can think and that we own the world?
