Was WR Simpson an ‘08 draft mistake?

EAGLES STAR DeSEAN JACKSON

WENT 3 PICKS AFTER SIMPSON

===Today’s subject is Jerome Simpson. LUDWIG AT LARGE wants to know: What in the world are the Cincinnati Bengals waiting for? The club needs to do one of two things. Either admit you made a mistake in drafting him … or … JUST THROW HIM THE DAMN BALL!!!===

A quick check of the numbers shows the Cincinnati Bengals made a huge mistake in the 2008 NFL Draft.

With the 46th overall pick in the second round, they selected Coastal Carolina wide receiver Jerome Simpson, He’s only had a cup of coffee on the field so far in two games and is still looking for his first NFL reception.

Three picks later at No. 49 in the second round, the Philadelphia Eagles grabbed University of California wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

In two games for the 1-1 Eagles, Jackson has 12 catches for 216 yards, a whopping 18.0 yards-per-receptions average, with a long gain of 60.

That said, Jackson made the biggest bonehead play of the 2008 season in the Eagles’ 41-37 loss at Dallas on Monday Night Football.

He sprinted past the Cowboys secondary, caught a bomb from Donovan McNabb and dashed into the end zone for what appeared to be a 61-yard TD reception.

But the knucklehead rookie flipped the ball backward at the 1-yard line, costing him his first NFL touchdown.

Replays showed the hot-dogging Jackson clearly released the ball before crossing the goal line.

The Eagles were given the ball on the 1 and scored on the next play, taking Jackson off the hook.

The sad thing is: Had the Bengals selected Jackson instead of Simpson, they’d have buried him behind Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh just like they’re doing to Simpson.

I feel sorry for Simpson. He’s a great talent who’s not being used right by the Bengals. What are they waiting for? UNLEASH HIM!!! Right now, Simpson is a pretty expensive ornament on the sidelines. What’s his mind set?

“I’m just waiting for my number to get called,” Simpson said.

Hey, Bengals, just in case you forgot.

The number is “89.”

Peace out.

Chick, You are comparing apples and oranges. Saying Jerome was a mistake because he hasn’t done anything but DeSean has been awesome is not a valid argument after only 2 games. Based on that, TJ and Chad are also both mistakes, because DeSean’s numbers for 2 games make their numbers look horrible. If the two players were switched, DeSean would have few, if any catches and Jerome would have some nice numbers. The Bengals offensive line can not block, no running game to free up some room for passing, and Carson can’t throw straight. Finally, Marvin would NOT have DeSean on the field in front of TJ and Chad. Basically, your logic is illogical. Thanks for playing. Next contestant please.

Is Chick “the Chickster” Ludwig really the best the DDN has to cover the Bengals? I thought he was annoying before, but ever since blogging started, he just sounds juvenile. Ending a blog (what’s the difference between a blog and a column, anyway?) with “peace out?” Um, you go homey! And can we please quit all these gimmicky blog headlines?

While were on the subject of mistakes, Does our offensive line sucking have anything to do with signing an unproven stacey Andrews to a multi million dollar one year franchise player deal and Letting Pro bowler and long time Bengals tackle willie Anderson go to the Ravens????

Hey Chick…I know I am just a lowly reader here, but Jackson was playing last night because the two starters were out. I understand your argument about Simpson-he should be #3 ahead of Chapman and Holt-but comparing him to Jackson last night was a little off.

Wolverine, blogs are for personal opinions and items that don’t fit into columns. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

If you actually read the post, you’ll see that Chick’s conclusion is not that Simpson is a mistake, but that the Bengals need to use him before he can even be evaluated fairly. thanks for playing ‘reading comprehension.’

Chick, you sir are a retard. Why don’t you try comparing the Bengals O-Line to the Eagles O-Line, that’s where the passing game starts.

It won’t matter if you play Simpson or not, the only thing that will matter is getting rid of Marvin Lewis!

the Bengals could have upgraded their Front 7, majorly, within a matter of hours, had they used the 46th pick on Trevor Laws, instead of waiting for a drugtest failee and a DUI convict that crashes into apartment buildings….but what do we know? If Laws sacks Palmer in Week 11, and Simpson has less than 15 catches at that point….then i’ll wonder if that pick was a mistake…until then, let’s focus on our O-Line improving the pass-pro, not the 150 lb. DeSean Jackson……

Hmmm…If I remember right, Palmer had plenty of time to throw the ball against the Titans…So I won’t blame our passing game on the O-Line. I will blame it on our receivers not getting open, Palmer not being confident, and stupid play-calling a Pee-Wee coach could figure out how to stop.

But Chick, Mikey loves to draft these project players. He never seems to draft guys who can step in right now. Remember, we’re always in rebuilding mode and have been since the early 1990’s. We’re almost there!
