Time to play ‘The Blame Game’
IS MIKE BROWN AT FAULT?
SHOULD ‘PB’ GET THE BLAME?
YOU BE THE JUDGE AND JURY
As I contemplate the Cincinnati Bengals’ 2008 season — the sixth time the club has started 0-6 since 1991 — I got to thinking about a question for loyal LUDWIG AT LARGE readers.
Who’s to blame for this mess?
The knee-jerk reaction, of course, is Mike Brown, who triples as the owner-president-general manager.
Granted, no person within the organization holds the title of “GM.” But let’s face it. Mike Brown is the GM because every decision, and every penny spent, requires his stamp of approval.
But there’s plenty of blame to go around … from Mike, Pete and Paul H. Brown, to Katie and Troy Blackburn, to the coaches, scouts and players. Maybe even Charlotte Jacobs, the cheerleader coordinator.
I know lots of folks who go to the game because of the cheerleaders. They’re the best athletes on the field. And the most attractive.
At any rate, I’m searching for blame. And I find myself going right to the top, where everything filters down.
And by the top, I don’t mean Mike Brown.
I mean the top of the top. The very top. The zenith. The cap. The climax. The pinnacle. The peak.
Pro Football Hall of Famer …
Cincinnati Bengals franchise founder …
The Bengals first head coach …
The man whose name is on the stadium …
Paul Brown (September 7, 1908-August 5, 1991).
When “PB” was awarded an American Football League franchise, to begin play in 1968, it was with the understanding that he would have sole control.
He was Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, of all things Cincinnati Bengals.
ABSOLUTELY … NO … QUESTIONS … ASKED.
And when he died at the age of 82, all that power was transferred to his son, Mike.
Mike is now in complete command, and total charge, of the Cincinnati Bengals, a franchise — according to Forbes — worth $941 million, a ranking of No. 21 among 32 NFL teams.
And his team is 0-6 for the sixth time since his father died.
Who’s to blame?
You be the judge and jury.

Paul Brown was a wildly successful football coach in the 1940’s and 50’s, but everything trended downward thereafter. By the 1970’s, the patriarch’s Old School ways were looking mighty eccentric, and his characteristic austerity lead to mixed success on the playing field. The league and the culture were changing, but PB didn’t approve and held steadfast. So every year the team’s operations slipped a little in comparison with the rest of the league, and the effects were cumulative. The total debacle of 1978 was our first indication that something was terribly amiss. In the 1980’s, audacious head coaches like Forrest Gregg and Sam Wyche could sometimes overcome the problems, but it was always an uphill struggle. And the trends continued to get worse. That takes us right up to the advent of the son. Mike Brown has gone on record as “being raised to think like” his Dad, and that is exactly the problem. Mid-20th Century ideas don’t often apply in the early 21st Century. Chick is focusing the blame in exactly the right place.By John

Chick, The only way we’re going to fix the Bengals is to kick them out of town and start over. And the only way to kick them out is for Hamilton County to find some violation of their lease and evict them….said lease is probably responsible for at least 20% of their $40MM budget deficit anyway! Now that’s what I call a win-win situation!By John

As recently as last season I was the most optimistic fan in the universe. For some reason I had faith that the Bengals were still on the brink of greatness and Carson could guide them to playoff wins and possibly a Super Bowl. It is apparent now that this is the worst organization in pro sports history and most of the credit for that honor belongs to Mike Brown. This ‘08 excuse for a team is punchless, hopeless, feckless, and utterly irrelevant.By Robert Young

Chick- After reading about the history of Paul Brown and Mike Brown on wikepedia….wow, you are right, the blame does start at the top with Paul Brown. The guy was so vindictive he tried to make sure Bill Walsh couldn’t get a job anywhere in the NFL. I guess the 49ers 2 SB wins vs the bengals (and Paul Brown…owner ‘til death in 1991) in ‘81 and ‘88 are God’s way of justice. Paul Brown wanted complete control of a team and thus bought the Bengals. BTW, Modell was right in kicking him out of Cleveland. Yes, Modell was a disloyal monopoly artist and he couldn’t win afterwards except for once (SB 1965). But Paul Brown couldn’t win it for the next 7 years as a coach or as owner/GM/president and instead got rolled by Bill Walsh twice. I actually will support the 49ers a lot now, now that I’ve learned how cruel Paul Brown tried to be, but the 49ers took a chance and Bill Walsh made it work making them a dynasty. Let me read about Pitsburgh and Green Bay but so far I’m gonna root for the 49ers from now.By KP

“When “PB” was awarded an American Football League franchise, to begin play in 1968, it was with the understanding that he would have sole control.” “He was Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, of all things Cincinnati Bengals.” That’s interesting! PB was pretty wise to get that concession from the powers that be. Seems he just didn’t train his son well enough to take over in the full success that he had, as owner and coach.By jim m.

MIKE BROWN is the reason we Cincinnati fans will never see a superbowl again. He has zero desire to do so and the only thing he worries about is sellouts.. I hope the Bengals go 0-16, Marvin is told by Mikey-boy he isnt firing him and the fans revolt and dont go back!!! I pray the REDS have a season in 2009 like the Rays are having this year.. that will seal the deal of Bengal fans spending on the Reds and forgetting mike Browns bungles.. I hope he takes the team and moves to Los Angeles..(that did wonders for the Rams and Raiders) and we can send a million letters to the NFL commissioner to get us a expansion team.. with a owner committed at winning.. ALSO, Hearing the Mayor of Cincinnati tell fans we must support mike Browns crap on the field angered me..he should have went to tell Mike Brown its time to do something as we tax payers paid for his FREE stadium and he has done zilch to get this team competitive each year like he said he would if us scammed fans would vote him a free place to play.. teh good thing in this? mike Brown NEVER got a dime from me and never will!! He will one day pass on and there wont be no mourning for him here in Cincinnati.. just a relief that the evil scam artist is out of his fathers house!!SAD but TRUEBy Brian

Paul Brown passed his stubborness onto his son. Mike is so old school and in todays day to day business its not a good thing. Now Katie Blackburn is learning on the job, but I doubt she will have the forsight or the stomach to run this organazation once Mike kicks the bucket. Until he recognizes that his thickness is killing this team it will never change. I take that back, his blatant disregard to change his ways. 1. get a competent gm. 2. quadruple your scouting department. 3. Stay out of the way.By Phil

Chick, Why can’t you post this or any other anti-Mike Brown article in the “real paper”. Everyone that reads your blog already knows Mikey sucks and is the root of all Bengals cancer. This needs to be in the paper, and needs to be front page material…”The Front Page” not just of the sports. Also the Cincy Enquirer should also join in on the Mike Brown bashing and post a huge article on the front page. I’m looking forward to the anti-Mike Brown aerial sign at the Steelers game, and also for another billboard like the one put up earlier “Chris Henry? Are you serious?”. How bout “Mike Brown give us a pro team NOW”.By bill

Chick,…Let’s face facts here, Mike Brown is making $ regardless of his record. They sellout each week as we are starved for FB in this state. The sad reality is until they hire a FB minded GM the Bengals will be stuck in the bottom of the NFL. The question I pose is will or does Roger Goodell have any power to demand a better product from one of his leagues teams while the LA market sits empty? This organization is clearly a joke, there is no clear plan here. I’m done until Mike Brown hires a FB guy to run this team. Go Colts!By Denis

The only way this will change is for fans to completely stop going to games, and boycott anything related to this franchise. That will FORCE Mike Brown to get serious about winning. If only 5-10K fans show up I wonder what would happen?By carol

OK, I am as disappointed as every other Bengal’s fan, but I think it’s a stretch to sya we are the absolute worst franchise. Have you not heard of Oakland, Detroit, and Buffalo? Mike Brown is one of the worst owners in football, but is he more evil than Al Davis, or more inept as the Fords in MI? Hard to say. The dilema we have here is one of power imbalance. Mike has the power and will not yeild. Our only recourse is boycott. However, be careful what you wish for. If the Bengals leave Cincinnati, we will never see another pro football franchise again. The market won’t support it and the NFL will nnot provide an expansion team to us. We’d have to try and steal a team off another city like Indy and Baltimore. BTW, don’t be surprised if we see the Totonto Bills in the next few years.By MGOOTEE

You DO NOT want to be the town that evicts an NFL franchise. Although Cincinnati is a more friendly, attractive city than Cleveland to the north, Cincinnati will never, ever get another professional sports franchise were either of the existing two to leave town. You may say that matters not, but you would be wrong. City reputations, business and citizens desire to move to or stay in a city, and even overall city revenues are impacted by sports franchises. Let’s see what it would feel like two years from now with an empty PB stadium waiting for perhaps a pre-season MLS game evey six years. Empty- cavernous-useless. The subject of countless pictures of Cincinnati, a town that couldn’t even hold the Bengals. While many wish for the Bengals to leave there will be 90 metropolitian areas sitting with their wallets open for only the chance to land an NFL franchise. As a local business owner and 25+ year season ticket holder I despise the incompentency of Mike Brown and his futile franchise, but someday he and his legacy will pass. The Bengals have unfortunately grabbed the mantle of ineptness long held by the Tampa Bay Bucs of the 70s and 80s. But like Tampa, a new day, era will always dawn eventually.By BRAD

DOES MIKE REALIZE HE HAS FOREVER TARNISHED THE LEGACY OF HIS DAD? YOU CANNOT RUN A 21st CENTURY FRANCHISE USING 19th CENTURY METHODS. OF COURSE WE NEED A BIGGER SCOUTING STAFF. El Pres, the Bengals are BY FAR the worst franchise. Detroit, Buffalo, and Oakland—are you kidding me? The Lions made the playoffs 6 times in the 90s, the Raiders have been in 5 Super Bowls, winning 3 of them (43 total playoff games to only 13 for the Bengals), and the Bills made it to 4 straight Super Bowls in the 90s (although they lost all 4) and are currently 4-1.By Steven Ross

OK…when Mike brown said he needed a new stadium to be competitive…he did not mention the fact the competition was not on the field, but the amount of money he was making at the time versus the other owners-Jerry Jones, mainly. He was NEVER going to make the team on the field competitive-he just wanted as much as the rest of the league’s stadiums that had 15-20 luxury boxes (the revenue of which is not shared with the league). I was against the stadium from the start because I knew he didn’t care about the team. If he truly cared, why did he fire the greatest coach in the history of the team only to hire Dave Shula?By SAM

I can understand Paul Brown’s attitude after the way he was treated in Cleveland. Mike Brown seems to be a nice guy who is way-way-way in over his head. You would think he is tired of the abuse and he already has made his millions and would step down. i think he is waiting for that one golden year so he can go out on a high note. Pittsburg was the laughing stock of the league for years and years until the Rooney’s finally turned it around. I think Mike Brown is waiting for the same thing. But now, I hate him so much, I hope he never gets it…he’s made me suffer too long. After 20 years of holding season tickets, I gave them up. I will not buy them again until he is gone. My advice to other ticket holders: the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Therefore, you are insane if you keep buying season tickets as long as Mike Brown runs the Bengals. Mike Brown, Step Down!By kelly in da ville

Mike Brown couldn’t run a lemonade stand let alone aprofessional football franchise. When did the Bengals start becoming the Bungles? As soon as Paul Brown died. He is just like Al Davis. The running game is a joke, Chris Perry can’t hold on to the football. It is bad enough he can only muster 14 yards on 11 carries that won’t work even in pee-wee football let alone in the NFL. Can we not move this last desolete section of the NFL into the 21st century and put the geezers into thier retirement homes? Please DO NOT mention moving the Bengals!! That is THE DUMBEST THING THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD!! We need a new revitalized front office that knows what the hell they are doing. What has to happen is a merger of equals, namely with the Cleveland Browns. Perhaps call the Bengals the Cleveland Browns South (prisoner malcontent branch) sort of a Paul Brown cavalcade of losers or what once was will never be again. Hey Chickster….have you seen the report on WHIO-TV Channel 7 where thousands of Bengal Fans are trying to unload tickets for the remaining home games at Paul Brown Stadium? There are over 3,000 tickets listed on Stubhub.com just for this coming Sundays game against Pittsburgh!! Some of the tickets that have a face value of $64 are going for as low as $24!!! The Bengals are dissing the fans for selling, but yet they expect us fans to shell out the big bucks to watch those being paid millions of dollars to play like they are playing. Marvin keeps saying things will turn around. When? When he is no longer the coach of Mike Brown is no longer the owner. We have waited far too long for a winning team. Your thoughts?By Joe

When you look at the last 18 years of futility there has only been one constant - Mike Brown. When everthing else has changed, you look for the constant. Unfortunately he owns the team and does not seem to realize he is the only constant. Nothing will change until Mike Brown realizes he is not his father and hires some football executives that now what they are doing.By John

I am 42 I remember some good seasons a long time ago; Anthony munoz,Boomer, the problem is a good season or two a long time ago just gives you false hope who cares if they leave I cant even stand to watch them the frustration isnt worth it I would rather not have a team than have Mike Brown ruin my sundays like all cities without nfl teams everyone will just root for another team. I hate to be a fair weather fan but I just can’t wait any longer for the weather to clear.By Fed Up

Oh, Please “Mike Brown is at fault”. Iwas at the Steelers/Bengals (regular season) They were selling shirts with the spiky headed kid unrinating on a picture of Mike Brown. In 2005, Mike Brown was, all of the sudden, the greatest owner ever! Now he is back down on the totem pole. It is always to place blame on the owner. Cry babys!By ShockMonkey

The mere fact Mike Brown thinks he knows football is the most telling faux pas. Name one company that would retain its CEO if they provided one year of positives returns but 17 negatives. He/she would have been thrown out 15 years ago. I also look at my Detroit Red Wings as a well oiled machine where the front office does everything possible to win! The antithesis are the Bengals and Brown Family. Ying and Yang.By ShockMonkey

Mike Brown is in it for the money not to win games, so as long as he’s making money he’s not going anywhere.By Mark

Chick,I have been an avid bengals fan since i was born My father was a Brown Fan, Now when i say BROWN FAN, I mean PAUL BROWN FAN, Yes he liked the BROWNS BUT NOT BECAUSE OF THE REASONS MOST BROWNS FANS LIKE THEM BUT BECAUSE OF ONE MAN, PAUL BROWN, THE ICON OF ICONS,THE MAN OF MEN,THE COACH OF ALL COACHES, THE ONE MAN WHO JIM BROWN FEARED ENOUGH TO GET HIM OUSTED FROM CLEVELAND! HE KNEW FOOTBALL, HE KNEW TALENT, HE KNEW WINNING, MIKE BROWN COULD NOT CARRY HIS FATHER’S CLIPBOARD! HE IS MAKING A MOCKERY OF THIS GREAT TEAM! AND I BET GOOD OL PB IS ROLLING OVER! MIKE KNOWS THE BUISNESS ASPECT OF IT I BET L.A. IS KNOCKING ON HIS DOOR SAYIN, HEY MIKE, MOVE OUT HERE IN L.A. NEW STADIUM,MORE MARKETING, MORE MONEY, MIKE BROWN WILL MOVE THIS TEAM TO L.A. IM WILLING TO PLAY THIS OUT, IF WE CAN GET A OWNER OR GROUP OF INVESTORS WHO WOULD BE COMMITED TO WINNING, AND PUT OUR BENGALS BACK ON THE MAP! SO I THINK MIKE BROWN IS TO BLAME FOR THIS MESS!By psychostats

Nobody who points to Paul Brown intends to let “Mikey-Boy” off the hook. At least I certainly do not. MB’s problem is that he slavishly follows his father’s teachings. Even the obstinate resistance to change is a direct reflection of the elder Brown. Perhaps we can say that the ultimate blame is shared between father and son. Mike Brown is obviously a horrendous owner, but I think it’s a mistake to leave PB out of the equation.By blindeye

The reason is Paul Brown! He fathered the sons and fathered the mess so it’s all his fault. Paul Brown was a legend and did alot of great things. He also was cheap and had stupid arrogant pride that caused problems too. It was pride that got PB into Cincinnati to start with. I guess it was stubborn pride thinking that he would teach art modell a lesson. It was cheapness of him thinking he could run the organization all by himself.(this may have been possible back in the early days of the AFL but not doable in todays NFL with so many teams competing for talent) It was arrogant pride that had him trade away a perennial all pro player like Bill Bergey. A move which may have cost the team a chance for the playoffs (see Bergey in the Super Bowl) I guess it was either dumb pride or cheapness that prevented him from naming bill walsh coach after he retired. (see the 49ers in the Super Bowl). The same stupid stubborn pride and cheapness can be seen in Mike Brown too. Pride makes Mike Brown think that he can do it all himself. Cheapness makes him pick players from his alma mater instead of more promising players. Pride makes him stupid enough to think that we believe that Jordan Palmer should be on the team. Cheapness has him pick crimminals as players. Yeah he wants to tell eveyone that he’s a redeemer but in reality it’s cheapness talking. Cheapness has him picking an untested coach to lead the team and cheapness has him cutting proven veterans in favor of unproven players. Pride has him take profits while the team slides in to oblivion and profit taking has him standing idly by instead of correcting the problems Cheapness had him hold the city for ransom in order to get a new stadium. Note that the same thing happened back 90s and the fans suffered greatly. The fans were gratious and gave mike brown a second chance. For a couple of years it looked promising but here we are again. I don’t think the fans should allow Mike Brown a second chance. He needs to step down now or move the team out of cincinnati. I think the fans should demonstrate and tear up all of their bengals merchandise and dump it on fountain square and not by any more bengals product until mike brown steps down.By nick

It has to be the NFL! Just knowing they will appear here in Cincy is enough, don’t worry if the local team wins or not, it’s an event and people seem to think it’s worth their money that has escaped Wall St. to pay for and see. Must be nice!By nick
