Chris Perry vs. Steven Jackson
HINDSIGHT BEING 20-20,
BENGALS’ 2004 DRAFT
WAS A MAJOR DISASTER
Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda.
The Cincinnati Bengals were in position to select Oregon State tailback Steven Jackson with the 24th pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.
But they traded it to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for the Nos. 26 and 123 choices.
The Rams grabbed Jackson, while the Bengals picked tailback Chris Perry at 26 and offensive tackle Stacy Andrews at 123.
The result?
Jackson has rushed for 4,757 yards on 1,092 carries (a 4.4 average) and 34 TDs to go with 215 receptions for 1,845 yards (8.6) and 6 TDs.
Perry has 169 carries for 590 yards (3.5) and 2 TDs, plus 77 catches for 450 yards (5.8) and 2 TDs.
Andrews, meanwhile, was a three-year project who finally broke into the starting lineup in 2007. He’s earning $7.455 million this season as the starting right offensive tackle and the club’s franchise player. The Bengals offense is ranked 32nd and dead last in the NFL.
2004 DRAFT DISASTER
1—-Chris Perry RB Michigan 26 — Signed through 2009; safe to say he’s been a gigantic bust.
2a—-Keiwan Ratliff CB Florida 49 — No longer with the team. Cut by Colts, he’s a free agent.
2b—-Madieu Williams FS Maryland 56 — Signed in the offseason with Minnesota.
3a—-Caleb Miller LB Arkansas 80 — No longer with the team.
3b—-Landon Johnson LB Purdue 96 — Signed in the offseason with Carolina.
4a—-Matthias Askew DT Michigan St. 114 — No longer with the team.
4b—-Robert Geathers DE Georgia 117 — Bengals starting left end.
4c—-Stacy Andrews OT Mississippi 123 — Bengals starting right tackle.
5—-Maurice Mann WR Nevada 149 — Never made the squad.
6—-Greg Brooks CB Southern Mississippi 183 — No longer with the team.
7—-Casey Bramlet QB Wyoming 218 — Lasted one season.
SINCE THE DEATH OF BENGALS FOUNDER PAUL BROWN BEFORE THE 1991 SEASON, IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT SUNDAYS IN CINCINNATI HAVE NEVER BEEN THE SAME …

To heck with Jackson or any other running back THAT THEY DIDN’T NEED in that draft. TWO Pro Bowl defensive players were selected (DE Will Smith by New Orleans and DT Vince Wilfork by New England) between picks 17 and 26. Same DUMB draft mistakes made year after year.By sam

Marvin the biggest mistake? A genetically engineered super-coach crafted from the combined DNA of Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Bill Walsh, Tom Landry, and Joe Gibbs wouldn’t make a difference if it were working under Mike Brown.By tom

If Mikey hired a G.M.he would still be in charge. What he needs to do is not interfere with the football people he has.Maybe Marvin is more suited to be an asst.coach you know like Dick LeBeau.By Brian

I wish there was a way to petition the league to have the Bengals featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks next year. This year’s training camp would have been great, if only to see Mike put the ka-bosh on the Jurassic Line idea because he wasn’t going to pay Stacy Andrews franchise tag money to play guard. Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that front office…By Draft guru

Here is the tell all guys, name a head coach or assitant coach under Mike Browns stewardship of this team that has gone on to another team and been successful as a head coach?? you can’t can you because there aren’t any.. After P.B. there hasn’t been a coach worth a hoot, Lebeau would be the exception as a D-coordinator but he has only been good with the Steelers… you have to go all the way back to the 70’s to find coaches like Bill Walsh Whom the P.B. brain trust tried to undermine and keep him from going on to other jobs even as a head coach, the bengals as an organization is antiquated, can’t evolve with the times and can’t judge playing or coaching talent, Look at other organizations and you see coaching lineages and successes none from Cincy and none especially under Mike Brown, Sadly it is going to take selling the Organization to make any changes Katie and Todd and Paul H. are gong to continue to run this club the same way Mike has run it and until they can be shown people won’t put up with second rate product at 1st rate price things will never change!!By BMN

Fact: The Cincinnati Bearcats have played 75 less games than the Cincinnati Bengals since 1991. The Bearcats have 100 wins in that time, the Bengals have 97. Fact: When/if the Bengals win 3 more games under Mike Brown, he will have taken more games to win 100 than any NFL owner ever. Fact: Should Brown remain for 42 more games and the Bengals finish between 3-39 (.007) & 24-18 (.571), he will be slowest to 100 wins and the fastest to 200 losses of any NFL owner ever. The Bengals are a mess from top to bottom. Let’s not kid ourselves though, the buck and stupidity starts with Mike Brown. The worst owner in all of sports.By VoHo

Chick — that 20-20 has nothing to do with hindsight. It represents the $20.20 Mike Brown was trying to say by drafting lower. MB Creedo: If you don’t have the spine or the ‘nads to put in the work, you look to make as much as you can by cutting corners!By blindeye
