A closer look at OT Anthony Collins
ROOKIE ON THE RISE
PLAYS A KEY ROLE
IN ‘BIGS’ PACKAGE
FORMER KANSAS STAR
HAS PLENTY OF UPSIDE
AS VERSATILE TACKLE
Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Anthony Collins is showing enough progress to be considered a rookie on the rise.
The fourth-round draft pick from Kansas has played in three games when the Bengals turn to their “bigs” package on short-yardage rushing downs.
Collins gets inserted at left tackle, while LT Levi Jones lines up at tight end next to RT Stacy Andrews.
Going large up front helped spring TB Cedric Benson for 104 yards in a 21-19 victory over the Jaguars.
The coaching staff is nurturing Collins, giving him plenty of time to learn the speed of the game and the toughness that’s required.
He’s versatile enough to play either tackle spot and is viewed as a key building block for the future. He’s expected to make a major impact in 2009 because one or both of the starters may not return.
Jones continues to battle through knee problems, while Andrews is headed to free agency again in the spring after his franchise tag expires.

Chick, The question is, can Collins be a starter in te NFL or is he a career backup? We have not seen enough of him since we can attend practise ect. When Andrews leaves and you know he is, can Collins step in so that we don’t have to draft a OL in the first?By Brian

Please tell me this team isn’t going to put its soon-to-be once again surgically repaired franchise QB, Carson Palmer, behind a fourth-round draft pick project left tackle. Eric “Swinging Gate” Ghiaciuc was supposed to be a “key building block for the future” too and we all know how that’s turned out. Carson, for your own sake, KEEP STALLING on the elbow surgery!!! Or just step in front of an oncoming bus before next season starts. The end result will be the same.By Pat Hogan

The Bengals have no chance at the play offs. They will probably need to replace at least one of their tackles next year. Why not give Collins some real game experience this year. That way , the Bengals would have a better idea of what they have and need to do.By Pat Hogan

In reading the Chickster and getting a closer look at the Bengals organization, I’ve come to realize the Cincinnati Bengals can be likened to a AAA minor league pro baseball team. The football players in Cincinnati are there to develop their skills, and “get ready” to “move on” to the NFL. I feel the Bengals owner has had this goal, since PB passed and MB became the head. Perhaps we should only look for the Bengals to entertain us, and not get too serious wth them as if they were to be an NFL contender. Even today, MB is probably the only person who is still reaching his goal, ie, the filling of the stadium seats every home Sunday.
